Antonella I had the Same problem. Use a regular snap mouse trap and a salted pretzel about a quarter of an inch long ,Wrap a piece of scotch tape around the trigger base and the pretzel to hold it in place. Works every time. Hope this helps.

Yes indeed. I'm a militant leftie and I bought one years ago. I have a lot of trouble putting it on a can, I'm so used to the right handed ones. Great fun giving it to a visitor and asking them to open a can with it.

Walk the Plank trap and mounted it onto a bucket. And built a 22" diameter wooden platform around it. So it will work as a combination of the two traps that have received your highest endorsement. The pitfall top looks like only an open green platform with a few multi-limbed branches tied in place to guide the way: "Nothing to see here, move along to that great smelling lunch."
For a cost of less than $30:
+ collapsing trap
+ plywood
+ bucket
+ deck screws
It's in place now, with no bait, so the rats get used to it. Then tomorrow, peanut butter in different places, "diving board" not set to drop. Then after a few days, trap will be set.
The rats have been extremely wary, and uncatchable in months past. Most of this I learned from you, Thanks!

So about the left handed thing. I can't quite remember the name, but there is a brand that makes every day kitchen utensils for both left and right handed people!
Shawn you should up the ante and make one out of a big can like a sweet sues chicken can Or coffee can and try to get a rat. Good job man.
If you're looking for a left-handed can opener, I recommend the Kuhn Rikon Switzerland canopener. It's a top-down canopener with a pair of parrot jaws on the side to grab the lid. The way it cuts the lid makes the edges of both the lid and the can smoother than a regular can opener, reducing the risk of cutting fingers. It's around $20, so it's a bit more expensive than your normal canopener.
Got a couple of small downsides though. You sometimes have to go around the lid a second time, and the lid sometimes has to be grabbed from a specific area for the jaws to pull it off.
Getting Mink man up there with the dogs and mink, and it will be lights out for the whole rat and mice metropolis !!!

I'm glad you read my question on your video. 9:04 I've been curious about the black pepper that people use to sprinkle on food. It has a strong smell and causes people to sneeze. Some people say it repels mice.

Great video, the fairy wheel trap is very whimsical. Chocolate milk powder instead of flour might work better than when mixed with plaster of paris.

Shawn, if I mix up a batch of cornmeal, sugar, and baking soda (you tube ratters tell me the rats die), will it also kill predators who eat the carcasses? We only want to rid the rats from destroying our crawl space. They have messed up our heating ducts and have found their way into our kitchen and home. Pepper spray used by law-enforcement is a great way to keep rats mice and squirrels from eating electrical wire and any type of wire I’m a professional camera installer and I run into this situation every now and then and spraying it with a very hot very oily pepper spray usually will keep them from coming near any of the wires they normally with you through
I’ve mixed baking soda with flour( or corn meal). The mice can’t burp or fart, their stomachs swell up, and they suffocate. Sometimes mix some dehydrated peanut butter to draw them in.
Not sure if pepper works to repel mice, but mixing hot pepper flakes, capsaicin extracts, etc into birdfeed is a great way to keep squirrels and other mammals out of your birdfeeders. Squirrels only have to feel the burn from the pepper a few times before they learn to leave the birdseed for the birds, who are unaffected by capsaicin.

In primary school, I was in the predator free group where we catch rats and mice.
One time we catch two mice at the same time, one was caught in the trap and the other was just dead next to the trap.

On the mouse trap that has the label fairy on it my understanding was that mouse trap would squeak as he would run through the wheel which would be an indication that the mouse had been caught

You can't beat the price on that as a no-kill trap.
I have built a lot of these they work great!
My can opener cuts the seam of the lid so it is not sharp around the edge.

The most effective live catch mouse trap I've ever used is called the "Thanos Humane Mouse and Rat Trap" on Amazon, though it really is NOT suitable for catching rats -- it's way too small. Also, to catch small/baby mice, it's a good idea to remove the small spring under the trigger plate. The trap works just as well without this spring and removing it doesn't increase false positives, while having the benefit of reducing the weight required to trigger the door.
I love your trap videos. I've learned about humane no kill and safe trapping in 15 minutes from you with much success.
Another excellent video, thank you Shawn. I concur with the hot sauce theory, I used a Hot Chilli Sauce to deter rats from food packets. But needed to be fresh/reapplied.
You could try using one of those can openers that dull the edges of the lid as it cuts
You might need to grind those peppercorns for them to work (freshly ground having a more potent aroma).
Great video, might have to remake that with a big soup can to see if I can catch a rat.

Flour and plaster doesn't work well but there is that quick setting stuff called fixall mix that with flour or even better chocolate milk powder and watch how fast it disappears its exothermic so they feel warmer after eating. Sets in large enough chunks that the rodent cant expel it and clogs them up not the nicest way to go so I like the idea of the rat X a lot better. less pain and suffering for the animal. the issue with rat x is most people treat it like the old decon where a few pellets was enough and well that's not how rat x works it requires a large quantity as it uses salt to throw off the osmosis in the animal and that causes there demise. so when a larger animal eats them they may feel a little thirsty due to the salt but in almost all cases will not actually cause a by-kill.
Looks like a fair amount of work to make that trap. I guess if money is very tight...
