Royer R-10 vs sE Voodoo VR1 (via 1963 Jazzmaster and 1964 Tremolux)

  • Two ribbon mics in a similar price range. Royer R-10 vs sE Electronics Voodoo VR1. Both mics were positioned centered on the same speaker. 1963 Fender Jazzmaster through a 1964 Fender Tremolux. Dirty tones are via a Land Devices HP-2. Recorded with a UA Volt 276 (with both the compressor and preamp engaged on each mic) into Logic Pro where no additional post-processing was done.

    I personally like the crispier top end of the voodoo.

    The royer seems to get the highs better. While the SE is a little bit warmer/darker from the get go. Id personally want the R10 but for my use, seems like the VR1 is better. For an all rounder, Royer, too, for me. Thanks for this video. 🙂

      also has a lot to do with the the mic location. edge of cone is darker

    I like the Royer! To me it has more "depth" and "clarity". I may be biased though, I own the Royer.

    The royer requires less editing in post.
