    This is a very exciting episode for me because we’re reviewing a BRAND NEW MIC (The Royer R-10)! At least it’s brand new to me! haha
    We all know about Royer Labs, and we all know that they make a very famous mic called a 121 - it was one of the first “affordable-ish” ribbon microphones that became an industry standard. So many engineers that I know, will double mic electric guitars with a 57 and a 121- other people just use the 121 on its own.
    Then a few years ago, Royer came out with a mic called the R-122V, which was a tube version of the 121. It’s a phenomenal mic! I’ve used it with guitar players that are overly bright. It seems to have a way of just smoothing out the high end. However, both the 121 and 122V are priced over $1,000, which is “cheap-ish” if you compare it to a Vintage RCA or some of the other ribbon mics that are on the market.
    I got a call from John Jennings over at Royer a few days ago and he said “hey, we have a $499 ribbon mic that I’d love for you to try.”
    This $499 ribbon mic is called the R-10, which is what we’re taking a look at today.
    Not only did they send us one to try out and review, but they’re also going to send one of YOU an R-10! Enter the giveaway at the top of this post!

    I have one and LOVE it. Great on just about anything. It does have a very exaggerated proximity effect so if it seems boomy just move it back at bit. Also, you can turn it around and use the back side for a brighter sound or if you need to be really up close to the source. I WILL be buying another so I can have a pair for stereo micing.

    the thing i look for the most is how much the fight between the pick and the strings is heard. a little is ok but if its a lot and the transient is too snappy so i avoid that mic for acoustic. seems like the r10 is a good fit.

    What a beautiful and amazing sounding microphone. I'd love to use one. I was always a little sceptical about a figure of 8 pattern, but its sound is just gorgeous. And the examples you showed were great. Just to satisfy my curiosity, did you have done compression on it? I noticed some LEDs flashing in the background, which would not change my opinion about the mike or your great presentation. I know, you only endorse products you really like. Thanks!

    According to Sound-on-Sound "Royer’s patented R-series ‘offset ribbon’ technology" is responsible for the "slightly different tonal (and maximum SPL-handling) characteristics for sounds arriving at the front and rear". While this imbalance bugs me a little, it's good to know that this is an intentional 'feature' not an unintentional 'bug'.

    Thank you for the constant content. What kind of mic set up would you suggest for recording brass instruments? Small diaphragm or large condenser mic? Was looking at Lewitt mics but I have a $150 budget. Don't know if a new or used mic would be a better route for me. Sorry for the long and specific question but may be good for a Q&A video in the future.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  Před 5 lety +2

      garret765 marvellous question! With $150 I would look at Dynamic Mics, probably even used mics. I don’t have a favourite in that price range. With Brass there can be a huge amount of SPL, so I would start with using affordable Dynamics and then build your collection from there.

Fat and beefy close up w ribbon and bright it up with the 012. That ribbon gets all the knarly rip without the hissssss...might have to HPF a little. Plenty of bright with 012 if needed.

    Great review, hope I get it this time!
    Warren, I have a question in regards to some of the files on the Pro Mix Academy. These are .ptx files and cannot open them. What do they contain? How can I go about opening these?
    I run Reaper on Windows, as far as my understanding goes, .ptx files are from Pro Tools (?). Can I see them in windows?
    Thanks ever so much in advance for your help!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Jules, marvellous question! The files are ALL consolidated so can be dragged into any DAW. The .ptx file is not Audio, it's just the DAW session for Pro Tools. On Reaper it's not any help to you, you have everything you need with your set up pulling the Wave files in!

    I've never used a ribbon mic; and I noticed you had it right on the electric guitar cab. Do ribbons handle SPL better in comparison to condensers?
    Update: Just read your article on Produce Like A Pro .com and SPL up to 160 @ 1KHz.. cool!

    • @chrismartinez1370
      @chrismartinez1370 Před 5 lety +1

      As I understand, you need to be careful using ribbon mics with high SPLs since its internal ribbon is really thin, and it can break

    • @chrismartinez1370
      @chrismartinez1370 Před 5 lety +1

      There is no problem using it with low/medium volume guitar amps, I wouldn't use it as a bass nor drum mic though

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Hans, I didn't have to put it super close. Of course you can experiment and try it any way that sounds great! Personally I wouldn't stick a ribbon extremely close to a very loud guitar cab, it won't quite have the SPL that a dynamic would have.

    • @DanielCardei
      @DanielCardei Před 5 lety +1

      Both of them was given by the same British Scientist :)
      he said it much easier to say Aluminium but the original was Aluminum.
      England was saying Aluminum and USA Aluminium but that one dominated :)
      I love this kind of topics it makes people look like they progress and progress its good :)

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  Před 5 lety +3

      Hi DanielC, you should dig a little deeper in your research! It went through THREE names from 1807 until 1812 when Davy decided upon Aluminium. 'Aluminum' is considered to be easier to pronounce and was adopted by Webster well after the final name of Aluminium was chosen. In fact the US didn't officially adopt it until 1925, 118 years after it was first discovered and 113 years after it was officially named and used by the whole of the rest of the world. Haha yes, fun times! Lot's of words have been changed to an easier pronunciation in the US, that's definitely where we are going in the future, a general simplifying of language.

      You speak about $300, but this is not even the bottom. There are mics around 100€ - not only from Behringer - which sound ok. Speaking of Behringer, they even sll or sold a case, with pop filter, some bits and peaces and a condenser below that.
      I never used it pn my ohn, but from what I heard, it seems to be ok.
