Today, we are going to talk about the 6 microphones that you need to know about! Some of these we have talked about before, but we have some new ones too.
Lauten Audio
This mic is s a small-diaphragm FET condenser mic that comes as a pair, with a cardioid and an omnidirectional capsule. It is also fitted with a lowpass filter. These features give you tons of flexibility in both studio and live sound situations.
Royer R-10
The Royer R-10 is a passive mono ribbon microphone designed for use in the studio and on live stages. These mics are also legendary on electric guitars! This has become my personal favorite ribbon mic of all time!
This mic is able to capture all the low end, midrange warmth and punch that guitarists and engineers have come to expect from any Royer mic. If you want more bite in the highs, but don’t want to multi-mic, the R-10 takes EQ beautifully and we suggest experimenting with your favorite EQ unit or plugin.
Mojave MA201-fet
This mic is a large diaphragm, phantom-powered, solid-state condenser microphone with a fixed cardoid pattern. The Mojave 201-fet gives warm, full-bodied reproduction of vocals and instruments without the high frequency distortion artifacts that tend to occur with modern condenser microphones. I used this to record my own vocal, and I absolutely loved the way it sounded! I was very impressed with the way this mic sounds!
Soyuz SU-013fet
Handcrafted in Russia, the Soyuz 013 FET small-diaphragm condenser microphone combines audio precision and transformer color to deliver impressive musicality and versatility. This is a gorgeous microphone that is reminiscent of the beautiful KM series of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I have a KM53 that I love, and this is the closest mic to that which I own. We did a full demo of this on an acoustic guitar and piano, and they sound amazing!
Earthworks SR314
Earthworks has precision engineered this handheld condenser microphone to offer a fresh approach to micing live vocals. This is a mic that we have not used before, but it is a great one! This is primarily a live condenser microphone, and captures natural, open, rich-sounding vocals with minimal proximity effect. Earthworks creates some truly beautiful looking and sounding microphones, and this is one of them!
AEA KU5A
The AEA KU5A is a front address ribbon microphone that is based on the very famous RCA BK5 microphone. The KU5A is a favorite of many producers and engineers in Nashville for recording electric guitars. It breaks new ground in ribbon microphone technology with its supercardioid polar pattern that rejects off-axis sound from room reflections, other instruments, and loud stage ambience in live situations. This mic is a great choice for everyday use in the studio and on the road!

What is your all-time favourite mic?
From Rode
I have 3 favorite mics: the R-10, sm57, and the Telefunken M-82. Between the three of them I can basically do everything I need
tlm102 best midprice
Vintage U87, although the new U67, which I recently rented, is spectacular. To me the new 67 is as good as the original.
Weissklang v17. Got the mic 2 months ago after I sold my TLM103 (which I thought was to bright and kind of sibilant) and I love it.
Can we all agree that Warren has an amazing singing voice? What a pleasant suprise it was!

@@greganikin7003 Ок, но мне нравится
I was thinking this whole “Mic Demo” was just a trick to make us all listen to him sing…
Yeah he sounds great though.
@@leomonster1973 🤣🤣
when warren starred singing my jaw dropped was not expecting that voice at all
You're too kind Ethan! I appreciate it!
Agreed - it was awesome!
I was expecting a cross between Lemmy and Barry White.
Club Soda or Procal Haram even :)
@@ZerroHouseProd At least you didn't say "a cross between Nick Nolte and Al Pacino".
Warren you really are a master at this , not only do you actually play, sing and engineer but you take the time to share your knowledge with the world! Much respect and I can only look up to you and strive to give back to the world one day as well!
Wow! Thanks ever so much
Really valuable to know of such material from a maestro like you! Grateful for this advice!
Watched to end. Whiter Shade of Pale. One of my favorite tunes. You did it proud Warren!
Thanks ever so much Robert!!
Great video, as always! Highly informative. Thanks Warren. I hope you release an album of your own material soon.
Enjoyed that thanks Warren, gave me some things to think about. As a drummer I love the Lewitts.
I absolutely LOVE LAUTEN AUDIO mics... truly fab gear/tools!
Earthworks is my dream mic for live but alas live is now but a dream. Cheers Warren!
I love your voice Warren! Thank you for everything you do!
I think what we are facing at the moment has reminded a lot of us who do this job that we started by our love for actually making music ourselves. Good to hear you singing and playing Warren! If you like Royers, check out the BM9 from UK company Extinct Audio. Keep creating as well as shepherding!
Warren - you were already doing a great job with your videos but you seem to have upped your game and generosity during this crazy time. As for the mics, I love my Royer R-10. Awesome ribbon mic. Thanks for your time and all of your great information and expertise you share. Stay healthy.
Thanks ever so much Jed! Always wonderful to reading your great comments my friend! Please stay safe, happy and healthy!
@@Producelikeapro hyy
Thank you. Made me somehow so happy today seing you yourself and you again on music as musician. It was very nice. You are pretty good musician I think! Pls dont forget that. And sure thanx for mic tips as well.
Wow, great singing, Warren. Beautiful.
Haha thanks ever so much my friend!!
Absolutely
@@uwebaganz5144 thanks ever so much!
@@Producelikeapro so when's that solo album gonna drop Warren?
Truly, wow👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Lovely mics.. Thanks Warren
SM 57. Done a lot more live mixing. Bullet proof. Cheap to replace when they grow legs. A real usable mic that can be used as a hammer if need be. As for studio.. get back to you on that Warren. Great mic line up today!
This is my fave video which you’ve done - the sound at the end of the vid is outstanding
Aw shucks! Thanks ever so much my friend!
Warren 😳 You inspire the crap out of me man 😂 You’re a beast. Salute from New Jersey 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Danny V thanks ever so much my friend!
dude very cool collection of mics...i never would have seen those coming
Always educating. Thank you Warren.
Thanks ever so much Rudy!!
I have the LA120. Great mics really! Ideal for acoustic guitar and important: classical guitars ...and their brightness is not sibilant at all. Fantastic SDC mics!
I did suggested them to a friend in Rome, he is making classical music production with quartets etc. He got a couple. After 2-3 months he was so happy: he got another one. He sold the sE he had before. Lauten is really a great brand! I tested also the Soyuz. David Brown was at my place in January 2018 to make me test the mics. GREAT!
AEA: I have 2 R9 and a TRP: just fantastic. I had also a RC44 for 10 days to try it in several conditions: FANTASTIC! I know (even if I couldn't try it till now) that also the KU5A is great!
This was a really fun video. Great stuff!
Hey Warren I'm hearing you sing this for a second time man, You better have some live dates coming soon god damm it!!! LOL
Hi Zorro in Hell you’re very a kind my friend!
Every one of those mics are an excellent value. Nice job on the Procol Harum!
What a phenomenal voice, Warren!
Another informative video Warren. Thank you! My Flea 47 (U47 styled-mic) gets a lot of work with my home recording, especially on vocals. When recording other instruments, I'm finding that it makes less and less difference about 'which' mic I choose, as long as I'm careful to listen to the results before hitting the record button.
I'm really excited about the Lauten Audio. I was talking with my Sweetwater Rep and was looking at more expensive microphones, but with us having similar voices, he mentioned how he actually prefers and gets the best results with the LA-320. I've been really thrilled with it and blown away by the results (and for the price). Now that I'm looking to get a new pair of small diaphragm mic for acoustic guitar and things like that, I will have to give a deep look at the LA-120. Sounds great
I enjoy and get so much out of your videos. Thank you for helping this bedroom musician improve and grow!
Favorite mics in my cabinet are a matched pair of Earthworks TC30s. Fantastic on drum overheads, acoustic guitars, brass and room mics. Only problem is if the source has issues, these will highlight those issues.
Mine ..the LCT 540S l won .. thanks to Produce like a pro and Lewitt microphones of Austria. Last mix was simple ..but clean as ..I'm dead impressed ...and in less time than ever. Thanks Warren You rock. Big up all the academy members. I need a second one ...lol.. ..i still think it's gonna make the best stereo pair when i get the other one. Peace!.
Great video, I liked the single mic on the drum set. Really picked up all the frequencies smoothly.
Yes! I was really impressed with it as well!
We picked up matched LA 120s, and matched Soyuz 013s. So far so good, thanks for the suggestions.
Real good mics thanks for the review, the guitar playing is insane wow !!!
Thanks ever so much!
Beautiful mics! And nice singing, Warren!
Thanks ever so much Martin!
Fantastic talent. Thanks, Warren.
Thanks ever so much
Wow! That rendition of Whiter Shade of Pale! Superb!
Thanks ever so much!
Another one to check out is the Vanguard v13 tube mic. Fantastic versatile mic for around $700
Thanks for the video! I learn a lot!
Thanks ever so much
I am learning so much beyond bass from your channel!
Just wanted to say great videos, a little out of my depth but some day I’ll use all this info. Thanks.
Fantastic shout out to some great Mics!!
Thanks ever so much!
Fantastic video!! I love your work, I started my journey in audio as a live engineer but using your videos, and advice from many incredible mentors. I’ve been able to build a home studio with enough gear to record my drums and a band with it. I’m wondering what your thoughts are on using ribbons on drum overheads? I had a pair of sdc’s and liked them, but then I got myself some cascade fatheads and love them on pretty much everything. Great work man, thank you for all of your great wisdom!
great info. Thanks
Loved the AEA KU5A, Wonderful Mic, Loved it at Blackbird still loving it. Thank you
Yes, amazing Donnie! Such a wonderful microphone!
Wow the Soyuz sounds amazing on acoustic.. I need to get a pair of these
I picked up the Lauten LA120's and the Soyuz 013's - thanks for the recommendations.
I think the best compliment I can give a mic is that the raw sound makes me feel like I don't need to (or want to do) do anything to the sound. The AEA KU5A fits the bill. The others are nice, that one is just soooooo smooth!
heyho Warren, nice and inspiring collection.
my favorit mic (what i'm own) is the Gefell UM70.
greetings from Berlin.
When you demonstrating the rejection on the Earthworks SR314 the only going through my mind was snare, snare, snare.
Hi Ed Kraus that’s a marvellous idea indeed!
i hope so much earthworks gets more attention ... They do such an amazing job! Also The Blue Hummingbird is extremely underrated ...
I've always loved Blue mics. Got a Hummingbird and then the Blueberry. Started with a pair of uh, sorry it's the only way to say it. Blue Balls!
My ADK Z67 is a desert island mic! The mics I use all the time, akg414, Royer R122, Shure SM7, ADK Z67. I also have lots of others including a nice matched set of Lawson 47s.
Thanks ever so much Scott for sharing!
Eric Shot wonderfull pictures , espacial from the black Guitar , what played with the last mic .
Thanks ever so much!! I'll let Eric know!!
Your guitar playing is awesome too 🔥🔥😍
Great song @ 8:33 Warren, love it!! I can't believe I've never heard it before. I had a blast playing around with mixing it. I tried putting reverb on my pre-master but I think I prefer it with just a bit on the acoustic guitars and the shaker. I feel an acoustic song like that needs to be more bare bones.
Have you found out what the song is? I am dying to know!
@@leejackson2505 Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum. Warren also did another version on here with Katie Ferrara on vocals. Definitely worth a check! Great song.
Warren didn't sound like a record until that AEA KU5A. Holy crap!
Wonderful
that singing threw me for a loop, what a beautiful voice man. thank you for sharing it Mr. Huart.
Thanks ever so much Frankie!
@@Producelikeapro You're welcome sir
I just love all of these. I've loved the Royers forever. Just been too poor. The Earthworks and the AEA just took my breath away. Which one are you getting my for Christmas, Warren? lol
Haha thanks Bobby!
Hi Warren, from your demo and practical experiment, can we say that the Earthworks SR314 is a great vocal mic for home studio suffering from bad soundproofing / weak acoustic treatment? The off axis rejection that you demoed is unbelievable! This means it won’t record background noise or room sound. What do you think?
great video, as always
I hope you can review the Townsend Labs Sphere someday!
I think is a very interesting mic and technology, btw
Greetings from Chile
About 7mins iin, with the R10 against the dust ca, just when he switches mics, that’s a golden sound. Terrific stuff.
Wow Warren!!! That was a fantastic rendition of whiter shade of pale. Thank you.
Thanks ever so much George!
Beautiful rendition of Whiter shade of Pale. In fact, I think I like it better than the original. Bravo Warren, great vocal. 👏👏👏
A mic that really surprised me is the EV RE320. Most people may think of it as a broadcast/podcast mic, but it sounds better on my voice than any other mic that I own. Really versatile (has a kick drum setting) and affordable too!
My favorite mic is the one that makes me sing and sound like Freddie Mercury. Just for the record: I ain't found it yet...
Haha I hear you!!
The transient response of the aea on electric guitar was very nice.
As a home recordist I'm very happy with my Rode NT1000 and NTK going through an ETR dual pre for vocals and guitars.
Wonderful video
21:46 Catch the Rainbow? :D Love that you're such a virtuoso on the guitar!!
Warren got that vintage vibe at @8:35
Thank you for taking me back to my youth with your soulful song...marvelous! When is the LP coming?..haha
Ase o/m/g thanks ever so much my friend!!
hi warren.nice inerpretation and vocals on whiter shade of pale.i was only yesterday watching the $1700 vs $10,000 mic video that you did at sunset sound studio wich looks amazing and all its history. Was a great camparison between the more expensive mics and the much cheaper setup although listening through my laptops speakers I couldn't hear much difference between each setup.anyway I wanted to say to anyone whose not watched it yet that the song with Jonah smith and co was just awesome and got me thinking about how good the muscians were because the sound is pretty bare but so well executed...great recording to mate...cheers
Great video! You have to try Aston Origin sometime ;)
I think you are doing micro review of mic stuffs. Good. Carry on.
Good informative demo
Thanks ever so much
That's too (or maybe 2) difficult to decide. I love ribbon mics, but the AKG C12-A and the Neumann U67/M269C are other worldly!
All of them are awesome.
But hell, that demo with the Mojave one you made several weeks ago is still giving me goosebumps !
So good!!
Thomas! Thanks ever so much my friend!!
Hi@@spitfiremusic3997 thanks ever so much!
for me the best part was actually your vocal on "a whiter shade of pale" !... unbelievable good!! RESPECT! I would buy a record with your vocal just like that!
Brilliant video, I’ve been looking at the Royer since it came out and I’ve never found a bad review. Is it the ultimate cheap (ish) ribbon mic?
Have a Royer R-10 on the way from Sweetwater right now.....cant wait try it out ......also just bought a Warm Audio WA 47,,,talk about stellar.....cant wait to try the 47 and the R10 on acoustic guitar and see what I get :)
Fantastic! Let us know how you get on with the Royer!!
@@Producelikeapro I certainly will
@@SNDTEK1 thanks ever so much!
11:40 Hey, it's "Live Me, I'm Rich" again. I really like this one. This price range is way above my budget, but it's good to know what to aim for. Thank You.
I discovered the AEA KU5A some time ago, but I did not have the chance to test it yet. Very interesting mic! Thanks for that!
Such a wonderful mic!!
It's a beautiful mic!!
@@spitfiremusic3997 agreed 100%!!
Amazing voice Warren!
You're very kind! Thanks ever so much
Hi Warren, great videos, Thank you!
I have a question, do you keep your mics on stands ready to go in your home studio or that youre putting them in and out their cases before and after every session?
And if you keep them on stands, do you put something on them?
Thank you so much.
9:20 Your voice is very calming 😳... wow 🧡🔥
Warren! You're an artist.
You're very kind!
The earthworks is really impressive
Thanks! Yes, this is a tera selection of mics
4:30 My man has a fine voice!!
do you know the name of this song?
YOU HAVE THE BEST VOICE I HAD NO IDEA!!!! 🥺🤯
You're far too kind Nat! Thanks ever so much my friend!!
The strutting...🔥🔥🔥
Royer recently posted on FB that Al Schmitt was using the R10. I'm really interested in the Lauten LA-120. Would you use the Omni caps as room mics maybe?
Nice, heard a bit of Little Wing in there too!
i own a matched pair of soyuz013fet, the black ones, best mics i've ever heard on acoustic guitars, i've tried them on everything and they've been always amazing, piano, vocals, guitar amps, toms, floor toms, overheads, you name it
Did you try to play fingerstyle on acoustic guitar with 013? DO you think its necessary to get 2 at the same time? Or just for private usage 1 will be fine, and if needed just buy the second later?
@@nik9470 i use it all the time on fingerstile and it's amazing, one can be enough, you can open it up in stereo later with a touch of reverb
Wow the Mojave MA201-fet song was really beautiful man.
I’m still figuring out my favourite mic. atm. But please tell me.. who is the singer?? My god what a beautiful voice
In the Lauten Audio video? That's Steve Maggiora! He's amazing isn't he!
Produce Like A Pro Yes, that’s the one. What an amazing voice! I just stopped the video there to ask this question. So at that point i didn’t even notice that you have a wonderful voice as well 🙏 thanks for all your great work, learning so much!
Geez. Where did that angelic voice come from? When you speak, I hear Cookie Monster's cousin from across the pond, when you sing, suddenly there's a tear in my eye. Amazing. Also: Who's that singer songwriter Seth Rogen looking dude with the double bass player? Loved that song!
That's Steve singing. Trip out. I went to school with him in Los Angeles. Trip out. His voice is great and has matured.
Yes, wonderful singer
The Royer R-10, man... That one is amazing on guitar!
I love the Royer R10!
Warren, Your clear vocal tone freaked me out. I was expecting gravel but got silk. Nice delivery also. Marvelous!
Why did you expect gravel, fred?
@@chipgaasche4933 Warren sometimes displays a certain guttural scratchiness in his speaking voice that I expected to be reflected in his singing voice. This was the first time I heard him sing. I was pleasantly surprised by his tone.
Love the whiter shade of pale cover.Great voice!
Thanks ever so much
Some of my favorite affordable microphones:
VOX:
* Mojave Audio MA-201 FET
* Lauten Audio LA-320 Tube
GTR:
* Royer R-10 Ribbon (ELECTRIC AMP)
* Shure SM-57 (ELECTRIC AMP)
* Shure SM-81 (ACOUSTIC)
I LOVE your version of whiter shade of pale. Right up there with Annie Lennox and the original. I want to download it into my music library. Can I buy it?
