    This has got to be your greatest episode. This is Mignolaverse 101. He’s definitely the best at the Kirbyesque. I mean Hellboy for sure has Thor and Ben Grimm in his veins, but the real prototype for this bad boy is Entrigan the Demon. Merlin’s Demon. And not only that, but he has the Lovecraftian down pat as well. And talk about merging Kirby with Moebius, Mike’s got so much going on. And I love how you described his mastery over the binary inherent in pen&ink drawings.

    Watching Mignola grow over the years and continue to master simplification and legibility must be one of life's greatest pleasures. I have this edition and watching ya'll nerd out over it as much as I do was awesome, now I want to go draw!

    Dark Horse, come on and put out some Hellboy collections in b&w! Jim you are spot-on about the way the colours muddy this thing, and Mignola's Universal monster movie ability to tell stories in b&w is unreal

    This is magic. Stark, graphic and streamlined art styles are everything to me at the moment. Mignola is a true master of the craft, for me he's above Kirby.

      It's kind of a fantasy vs. sci-fi question. Mignola wins with fantasy for sure.

    I just got this book in yesterday and managed to get a good deal on it. Absolutely love it! Mike Mignola is my favorite comics artist. I really like the experience of reading through Hellboy in Hell without dialogue or color. Mignola is such a great storyteller that all the atmosphere comes through perfectly. I hope we get another volume with the last half of this series since those last few issues are so great.

    Great video. The only thing wrong with this book is it doesn't keep going. I could look at his work all day. I have alot of love for all the Maverick/Legend guys from Dark Horse.
    Looking forward to seeing what you guys have instore for the channel next. Thanks for sharing, as always you guys rock.

    The spot ink master at play and work. As always, great vid. BTW, A Mort Cinder video would be so incredibly awesome too. Alberto Breccia's work and legacy deserve so much more love. He was such an underappreciated genius. Especially in horror B&W comics creation. His experimentation and craftsmanship is so off the Richter.

    @emaicee Před 3 lety

    OH BOY was that satisfying to watch! Mignola is so masterful at suggesting so many things. Whether it's textures, form, space, scale, or weight, it's all there. I love that he doesn't have to describe every brick on a structure. It's like good prose or poetry in that way. His work suggests larger ideas without having to over-explain. I feel like on paper it' reads low-poly and unfolds in the mind's eye fully rendered. I prefer his work in black and white for this reason. I can see the colors and values without it needing to be spelled out.

    Lovely book. I just trance out looking at my copy. The black and white works better than the trade, which I also have. In my opinion Dave Stewart is opaquing (it's a verb!) his colours a bit too much these days. The large size and lack of word balloons adds to the treat. Thanks guys.

    This is beautiful b&w ink work. It would be nice to see the pencil work. I think the only other artist who study a lot of b&w contrast is Frank Miller and his Sin City comics. both of them are good in their own ways.

    i wish there was an artist edition of Eduardo Risso's work

    Thanks for a great review of a master storyteller...I wonder if you see the influence of Hugo Pratt (Corto Maltese since 1967) in Mignola's work - similar use of simplified, relaxed line and shadow, supernatural adventure stories, great use of negative space....
