John Byrne once said of John Romita Jr's pencils, "He has the most confidently drawn lines of anyone I've ever seen."
My friend Chad Hunt was an inker in the 90's for X-Men, Wolverine, X-Force and Uncanny X-Men. Do you guys want to maybe get an interview with him to talk about his time at Marvel? I don't think he'd mind.
I've paused this video so many times now lol. These covers are all incredible
Y'all better be teasing a Sam Kieth interview.
"the perspective of eyelids". Total real art talk!
Love Dan Green inks. Unsung hero.
“No one owns all of these artist editions...” Um, I am almost there! Terry Moore and Jim Davis might never make the cut, but I have over 100 Artist/Gallery/Whatever Editions. They are VERY NICE. My favorite is probably the Basil Wolverton volume, but the Jack Davis one is incredible too. And of course all the Kirby volumes...and Wrightson’s Swamp Thing and...yeah, I love em!
Prince Valiant Studio Edition is my favorite followed be Bernie Wrightson one
Oh nice!, I've just starting collecting these myself. Am no where near your collection though :) The ones i do have are amazing , congrats on your collection.
I love this channel! My new favorite. Much love ❤❤❤ I quit comics a decade ago. Now this channel makes me want to begin again. Fresh and ne.
Just a note about the John Byrne influence in Jim Lee's art. I see it in the way Jim Lee draws torsos. Toward the end of his X-Men run, Byrne started distorting the pecs on male superheros. the rib cage got expanded and the pecs shrunk and moved upward, with just a few quick horizontal lines to define the musculature. Jim Lee picked that up and still uses it. You can see it most clearly here in the drawing of Magneto on X-men 274. The interesting thing for me is that this style has been passed on now to younger artists like David Finch. I wonder if they're aware of where it started. John Byrne's influence continues to ripple through the industry.
Listening to you guys gush over JRJR made me dig out my old Daredevils. Straight up legend.
That simonson x-factor is actually a 3 issues that fit together, that archangel cover on the previous page fits with them too... and that is for sure one of the coolest pieces of cover art/comic art i've ever seen. So much genius from this era.
Holy crap this is my new favorite channel! Haven't seen anybody else nerd out over the comic book stuff i like, about the process and the progression of styles. This is fantastic.
I LOVE THESE ARTIST EDITION VIDEOS!! please keep them coming! I love being able to see this stuff, and I love listening to what you have to say about each piece. Super entertaining!
That X-force 11 cover you guys are talking about is inked by Trevor Scott. That's his early signature. He may still sign that way. I'm not sure.
That dry brush Sam Kieth used on the MCP 85 cover made me realize something I never had before: that Frazetta HAD to be an influence on SK. The branch and foliage, etc, looks right out of one of the pen & ink drawings Frazetta did for the Tarzan paperbacks.
40:30 That past up was done by production artists. back then before computers we had to photo copy the words, past, and touch up the art... then it would get photo copied again and colored.
i loved byrnes influence on early keown art
Watching you guys, and listening is a history lesson in comics. Love every video you guys make.
Simonson’ was a huge influence on me on his Thor & Fantastic Four runs.
That female version of the Thing is Sharon Ventura, who was one of the many Ms. Marvel characters. She was also an FF member around the time that She-Hulk was, if memory serves.
Always great to hear you guys speculate about tools and technique. Pretty sure you're right about Rob Liefeld using Sharpies back in the day. It's been a while since I watched that old Stan Lee Presents interview with Rob (no more VHS player). I think it's on CZcams, so I'll have to watch it again and see what tools he's grabbing.
I also dug your comments about Walt Simonson. His works LOOKS so "simple" or "sparse" in a Toth-like fashion, that it's easy to overlook just how fantastic it really is. That foot-stomp by the Thing on that one cover, with the force lines radiating away from the blank, empty circle, and that KIrby-esque Thing big toe, is really iconic. The viewer is practically on the level of the the "floor" or horizon for that image. Is that Warren Wingfoot who's the guy in the fedora and trench in the Fantasticar with the FF?
Great comments too, on the imprint that Simonson left on Archangel, and the Kirby-esque nature of his designs. It reminded me of other artists trying to decide how to handle Crystal's hair, Black Bolt's costume and wings, Captain America's "mail shirt" or characters like Mister Miracle and Big Barda, with the weird design flourishes.
Wow! Thanks guys for this trip on memory lane.
Really enjoy these artists edition discussions. Between this and Sienkiewicz’s, I hope to see it become regular programming for the show with how many great AE’s there are. Fingers crossed for Buscema’s Silver Surfer.
Nice guys, I enjoy how you break down their knowledge as a craftsmen🙏👌🇲🇽
Just bought this two weeks ago!!! Amazing stuff in this artist edition!!! Love the Kieth covers!
55:04 True Janson! And JRJR!
Love DAN GREEEEEN!
Ive always wanted to see what this book looked liked ! Thanks for the review bros!
Eliot R. Brown did those technical drawings and weapons cutaways in the Marvel Universe Handbook and the Punisher Armory. I loved that stuff, it made comic book equipment seem plausible.
Love it! Thank you so much guys! A lot of great videos recently but I personally am hurting for a Shoot and/or Wizard episode. No worries though, I watch every vid and they are all great.
this is Amazing, love Your opinions on each artist. Keep it up!!!
How awesome. Didn't know that this book existed. Going to add to the kayfab effect. Thanks guys.
Just found the channel, and I’m hooked. Can we get a commentary on all-star Superman?
Great Video, with awesome commentary over some of the Best Covers of the Modern Era. No fooling, about 5 minutes after watching this video, I cracked open a Back Issue of Wizard (#60 the Fifth Anniversary Special from Aug 1996), and who wrote in one of the First Letters in the "Magic Words" Column? One James Rugg of Indiana, PA. He cuts a promo on "gimmicks" taking over the Comic Industry and directs readers to the Quality Bargain Marvel title, "Untold Tales of Spider-Man." Indiana, PA, about an Hour and half from Pittsburgh. Am I crazy or is the Letter from Jim Rugg, One half of the Dynamic Kayfabe Duo? Just a funny coincidence, huh?
One of the best episodes.
Got this fantastic 😊😊
Epic Covers! The Who is whos of my favourite artists! Man! 19:32 That Jim Lee piece on the right!
55:50 DAN "THE MAN" GREEN!
GI Joe # 46 by Mike Zeck is my all time fav. Thanks for the vids!
52:26 is one of the best spidey images i ever seen. With solid blacks w/o annoying crosshatching - awesome graphical art.
I literally just bought that 2nd appearance of omega red off ebay yesterday...one of my favorite villains of all time...and a character design i never get tired of.
So nice to see you guys give JR JR his propers here 👍
I have those MCP issues out right now, I’m organizing and reading them. Soo good
50:10 the two best inkers imo, they just take the artwork to another level, looks like Joe Quesada realized that too
That was fun to watch. I wish I had the money to buy that book.
The 4 part Jim Lee cover...I had posters of those on my wall connecting them.
BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA mention had me rollin
I’m surprised you guys skipped on the other stuff. I thought it was some great stuff.
So many memories...
spider-man 600 (the one with that great JRJR cover) is one of the first comics I remember buying. such a perfect issue
First off, fantastic video. I'm looking for this book now. Great insight from some great artists, I really appreciate it. Secondly, where did you live in Charm City for that year, Ed??
you guys take me back to pearl jam, first run star trek next gen, walking around cons meeting these guys!!! ty for this subbed..my fav artists were Art Adams and Brian Boland George Perez and jose luis garcia lopez
Dammit you guys got me into buying Artist Editions...!
Great video
These. Guys. Love. Old. School. Image!
Outstanding video sirs
Dope Video
@20 min in is pretty funny
All covers…plus a double-spread splash page by Liefeld from the interior of X-Force. Wondering why they included this as it’s not a cover
I love Jim from War Journal through Uncanny X-Men. Didn't care for his work once he started the famous X-Men title...
Class is in session.
28:07 a guy in my highschool actually drew exactly in teh Rob Liefeld style. Interesting that is how you characterized it.
That half wolvie half skull painting was a cover for MCP
Love hearing you guys talk about Jae Lee and would love to see you guys review Jae Lee's art in X Factor XCutioners song, as they are crazy
The paste up on Kieth's MCP 83 cover was because Marvel changed the claws. Look at the final cover to compare.
Cool.
Thanks for the video. Flipping through the pages bring back good memories. That is one of the worst Dale Keown cover. He is known for drawing muscles and that cover did everything but. I got some of his comics when he was still working on independent comics (before joining Marvel). Some cute art/paint work. Art Adams went through couple of phases too. I am surprised they did not include X-Men Classics #1 -which had the best Wolverine pose.
The iconic Classic X-men #1 cover by Art is in the 1st Marvel Covers AE which covers older covers up to the early 80s
Would you mind directing me to a resource that will give an example of that convex/concave eyelash thing? I am super intrigued. Trying to figure out what the hell it is please lol..
I believe the Scott that inked Liefeld is Paul Scott who just happens to be Liefeld himself
Hulk #379 is the cover Jim is referring to, I think.
Going out on a limb but, can anyone share a link to posters sized images of the Wolverine covers.
you opened up that Xmen 1 cover and all I heard was the Xmen animated theme
23:55 I never understood the Magneto positioning, is his back to the X-men and they're firing at his back? Are they shooting at the giant field behind him? He's definitely not looking at them.
my first McFarlene comic was Spider Man Sub City 1 of 2
Wolverine and Sunspot are standing in the same position on the New Mutants cover (#94)
52:33 I would have all sort of color to that .
So, the comics transform to a manga edition now?
The Michel Fiffe article about Simonson's FF that Jim references www.tcj.com/simonsons-fantastic-four/
Fiffe's piece on Simonson's FF: www.tcj.com/simonsons-fantastic-four/
Well, on the TV show he had hair.
One of the other artists who influenced Walt Simonson, and Bill Seinkeiwicz heavily, was Sergio Toppi. If you haven't heard of him, you SERIOUSLY need to check him out!!
czcams.com/video/xHUv2xO1J8g/video.html
Look at Spider-Mans right hand at 43:18
That X-Force #1 cover looks way better here than in print. In print, the whole composition just looks off. They should have gone with a red background color rather than blue, I think.
24:26 "you can't reverse engineer Gambit"
Probably one of the truest things said about the X-Men. That character makes no sense and is *so* popular
Jim Lee did some Conan Covers, so did Art Adams.
comicbookinvest.com/2016/07/04/colossal-conan-covers/
So you guys are saying that Liefeld's crappy covers are good because of the impressions they had on you as kids.
Both the first two Sam Keith's, Hulk and Wolverine, show the character's right arm (our left) at an impossible angle, like it's twisted around backward. That kind of thing would bother me endlessly. No matter how good the drawing is otherwise, that's just wrong. The X-Men #1 Magneto head, drifting way too far to the left, the What If Wolverine, with his head drifting even more absurdly to the side. How can anyone stand to look at these and not mind?
THEY ARE NOT MAKING ART LIKE THIS ANYMORE
All about the covers..YT clickbait in a nutshell.
Modern era? 20-30 years ego? lol
