We start the show with a trip to Radical Entertainment in Vancouver Canada to talk with the team working on NHL Powerplay ’98 for the SEGA Saturn, Sony PlayStation and Windows PC! Victor Lucas chats with Ferdie Espidido, Justin Sheffield, Colin Cameron, Emmanuel Soupidis, William Ho, Mike Biddlecombe and Alan Blouin about what makes this brand new hockey game feel so authentic.
Then after the break, Kelly Benson hits the streets to get peoples’ honest thoughts about Lara Croft and Tomb Raider.
Our feature piece this week is on the massive success of Tomb Raider and Tommy Tallarico chats with president of Eidos, Keith Boesky at Eidos headquarters in San Francisco. Vic catches up with Adrian Smith from Core Design at E3 1997 in Atlanta and then EP jets to Darby, England to Core Design HQ where Adrian introduces us to the team working on Tomb Raider II! We meet Peter Barnard working on cut sequences, Nathan McCree working on sound effects and music, and Neil Boyd and Heather Gibson working on the game’s level design!
When we come back from break we head to Milpitas, California, home of the fabled Atari Games and the birthplace of San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing. This is an interesting story because the arcade team behind San Francisco is working side by side with the Nintendo 64 team at Midway. We meet game designer, Cameron Petty; producer John Ray; artist, Rob Adams; and David Macias from the arcade team. For the N64 port we chat with programmer (and creator of Asteroids and Centipede!) Ed Logg; artist Kirk Young (who also worked on the arcade game); programmer, Michael Alexander; artist, Todd Papy (who later became a huge part of the God of War team at Sony Santa Monica)!
In Reviews on the Run we check out FOUR hockey games! Remember when they use to make multiple versions of the same sport every year? Remember competition?
NHL FaceOff 98 for the PlayStation
NHL 98 for the PlayStation
NHL PowerPlay 98 for the PlayStation
NHL Breakaway 98 for the PlayStation
And we end this episode with a special sneak peak of a game that has a very interesting history and a complex legacy, Shiny Entertainment’s Messiah.

Episode four already! Play Forever!
I love the candidacy and easygoing-ness of these old episodes. People weren’t a corporate as they are now.
Right?
Watching these episodes has become my Sunday morning ritual. Thank you!
Did anyone else catch the Fear Factory track playing during the Messiah trailer? I was so weirdly excited when I recognized it that I immediately pulled out my old Remanufacture CD (remix album of Demanufacture) and blasted the entire thing for an hour and loved every minute. The song was Machines of Hate, and it is awesome. Watching these episodes of EP feels like privelage; I wish they were all available at once. Thank you Victor Lucas and everyone else who was ever involved in the show. Play Forever.
Man the memories!! Thank you again! Loving the old computers and Reviews on the run! I remember how we all thought the graphics on the games were so amazing, not knowing just how much farther they would go.
I still remember watching Electric Playground back in 2005. I was nine.
I remember watching this every Saturday after cartoons in the late 90s, before I watched it on G4 TV. The good ol' days and Vic hasn't aged at all. Good stuff.
Awesomeness classic ep please do more thanks ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much for sharing your undeniably awesome legacy and everybody else that was a part of it. Have an awesome weekend Mr. Lucas!
These are perfect time capsules. Thank you!
Thanks for uploading these, Victor. Cheers!
I DO want the hottest secrets for Windows 95!
4 NHL games to choose from back in 98! Amazing!
Those PNP Games ads are weird, but strangely funny. Love seeing the history of video games and the show
I'm already so in love with the weekly episodes even though I binged them all less then a year ago :D
Love seeing San Francisco Rush here. I played that so much back then!
So lucky to have grown up with this show!
You’re very lucky! I was only 1 in ‘97 haha.
Great episode! I wonder how the original Tomb Raider creators feel about the latest TR news...
Victor rocking the striped shirt in this episode. I loved that look back in the day.
Late 90's /Early 00's....Peak of modern civilization. Change my mind.
Saturday mornings are the best!
Sam Francisco Rush on the N64 was amazing when it first came out. It was like having an arcade in your home without the hassle of a 400 pound cabinet.
I held off on buying a N64 until Hydro Thunder was released for the system. After that, I had to knuckle under and get one. 🕹️
Seeing the San Francisco Rush cab takes be back to goods time at the arcade.
I remember this episode with The Reverend... That last line had me cracking up!🤣
I didn't know tommy was the host back then.😮 I started watching when you both hosted and were on tech tv...cerca 2000.
Hilarious with Spanish part at the end 🤣🤣
San Francisco Rush has been my favorite racing game since I was a teenager. I played this game in a mall near my house and I always dreamed of being the best in the world at this game. I fought until I succeeded. I would really like to meet the creators, take some photos and play with them of course. I hope to go to San Francisco one day. Congratulations on the video.
Can you put the season and episode at the start of the titles going forward
Vic shirt...Option - BC flannel
Was 15 in 2005 when I first started watching. G4techtv really got me through a rough upbringing.
I remember discovering this show back in 00 when ctv would randomly air it on a Saturday morning. Savored every minute. Thanks for posting these precious time capsules of the good old days. (Loved everyone’s take on og Lara, she was badass!)
Did they cover up the team logo on Tommys jersey
Yep. Tommy wearing a Miami Dolphins jersey while talking about Hockey games.😆
That dude talking about the right players fighting, love seeing game design thinking.
dude l was 12 back then. Already a gamer ♥ and now l am gaming even more! Living the dream baby!
i miss this era. they were simpler times all around.
11:44 that Rhona Mitra as Croft!!
18:52 😅 I love Tommy half heartedly admitting his Conflict of Interest with reviewing FaceOff 98.
Really, it's one of the best hockey game ever made??? 😏
Possibly the last time he was honest. See the Amico disaster plus his "Exaggeration" of his own music credits
9 people made Tomb Raider 2?!?!
No, 9 made the first one. He said they're added people for number 2. But gone of course was Toby Gard who created it.
Can't believe in 97 my only game consoles where my Gameboy, GameGear, and an outdated Apple computer. Lol😂😭
Love these throwbacks. Its a shame about whats happening with Crystal Dynamics now.
Love how no one knew who Lara Croft was yet! Little did they know they were looking at a future staple of pop culture.
Vic has really aged well
❤️👊🏻
11:51 WAIT, was this a legit add from 97?
Nice 👍
What happened to your Fallout review?
Man whoever was peddling that Windows 95 course for 80$ which was a lot in the 90’s made bank for sure..
I was badly addicted to NHL Face-off
Oh it's Messiah... Ooffff
Muck Fessier!
Absolutely love seeing these retro episodes. I lived for this show back when being a kid in those days
Wow, it's amazing to re-visit the beginning of the worst ear in Canucks history! Lol.
Tommy Tallarico!? What a liar and a con artist!
It was better before you re-uploaded them.
Upload all of the classic ep episodes.
11:51 WAIT, was this a legit add from 97?
Yes! 80 bones, man. $$$
