- In today’s video - The police spill secrets on speed camera vans - probably the most contentious issue we could look at!
Speed is right up there in the Fatal Five and we see collisions daily caused by inappropriate and excessive speed.
This video shows you inside the camera van and also how it’s not just ‘braking distance’ it’s ‘thinking distance’ that effects how quickly you can stop. The difference in distance travelled in your ‘thinking time’ between 30mph and 40mph is 15 feet or nearly 5 meters. That’s potentially the difference between hitting or not hitting a child!
Police forces differ on thresholds for speeding offences. Most forces will allow 10% plus ‘x’ mph that then takes into account discrepancies in speedometer readings etc.
Thresholds can however be changed at any time so do not rely on this and it differs between forces. 1mph over the speed limit is technically an offence.
However it’s not all about limits. Not driving to the conditions and inappropriate speed are huge contributory factors in RTCs. The limit is a limit, not a target.
It’s not about revenue it’s about safety. If the camera identifies no offences that’s great as it’s done its job.

The amount of people hitting the brakes when they see these revenue collectors is more dangerous than the speeding.
Speeding on fast roads isn’t much of a big deal tbh. It’s more dangerous when cars do less than 70 in the middle Lane or fast Lane. Idiots like that need to be getting done for dangerous driving

@@thegamingdimension8665 No such thing as a fast lane. Technically, unless you're not allowed up to 70 (large lorries, caravans, trailers etc) you should be doing 70mph. Left lane for driving, all other lanes for over taking only

No matter if its a mattress or a mountain, if speed were the only factor hitting either at the same speed would cause the same injury... if that's the case, safety equipment is redundant as it provides nothing in the equation.

What safety 'equipment' are you citing that pedestrians carry?
The faster you collide with something, the greater the level of inertia that requires dissipating, so the risk of injury increases exponentially with impact speed.

@@PenzancePete the problem is that when the police say they have limited resources and don't turn up the things like burglary. And then hanging around and trying to catch people doing 33 miles an hour is a disgrace. I am willing to bet during their entire afternoon of sitting in a van they don't actually witness an accident. They just collect money.

@@ihavenoname4851 It isn't a matter of common sense, it's a question of data - verifiable data. Old people do not walk miles to get to hospitals, such establishments provide transport and unless there are stats to support collisions, motor vehicle vs pedestrian, at or near hospitals, then there is no reason to provide enforcement. Exactly the same applies outside schools - it's the 500m radius around schools where kids cross unsupervised that the problems arise, NOT outside schools.

9 times out of 10 they don’t put the signs up in my area....
I've never seen the signs up.and they always park on blind corners so once you see them it's to late and parking where the speed limits change.

@@Smithjw haha everytime you get in the car do you do checks on all your bulbs and tyres? Haha they sit there on purpose knowing that it’s the easiest way to get tickets, there’s no danger in what they’re doing, there’s normally no houses around or anything at that point. They just sit there racking in money from people slowing down slowly lol. The point of the police and speeding is to make the roads safer, but they do that just gain more money. Had one of these vans following me the other day on the way to its next stop. I was doing about 40 in a 30 and it was up my backside the whole way nudging me to go faster. Honestly you couldn’t make it up.

@@johnflavin1602 The high beams won't stop you getting a ticket if you are speeding. The laser gets you from the front and the camera on the roof gets you on the way past. The only thing high beams are going to do is piss off anyone else coming the other way.

Fully agree withbyour comments. I'm an ex traffic cop (retired) from back in the day when we stopped people and spoke to them..... Its a blatant misuse of public funds to use these camera vans. People want real policing back....
It’s not paid for by public funds, mobile speed enforcement is self funded via a % of the fee for the speed awareness course so without it the money wouldn’t exist.
I’ve been in a police car with a police officer driving, he was giving me a lift over to another police station where I was to give a statement regarding something I had witnessed a week earlier. He floored it all the way, the speed limit was 30. I asked him about how fast he was driving and he said he is allowed to drive at the speed! 😂

NO warning equipment has to be activated for trained police drivers to make use of exemptions. It's commonly stated by the public that the equipment has to be used but that isn't correct. It's down to the driver to justify and also to be accountable for their actions should they be asked to account for their actions in a court of law.
Many of the public are also wrong on the "Can't use them unless going to an emergency"... the actual rule is "making use of warning equipment or exemptions FOR a policing purpose"... doesn't have to be an emergency call.
If they were trying to discreetly catch up to a vehicle that had been reported stolen up ahead, say in an unmarked car, blaring a siren and flashing blue lights gives the game away completely and the driver of said stolen car might then take off, starting a dangerous pursuit when it's not necessary. On the other hand if an unmarked car with no lights activated and no siren overtakes a car or two it's less noticeable and less obvious.
I always imagine the person inside as a little troll laughing when they catch me 🥱
Wouldn't it be better just to stop dreaming about imaginary creatures whilst driving and focus on driving safely and within the posted threshold?

Maybe if they stopped wasting as much money on those vans and wasting an officers time sitting in them they could spend more money and officers time finding the thieves that broke in to 4 of my vans last year as well as stealing 1 entire van. Not so much as a phone call from them on any of the crimes......I’m sure someone doing 80 on an empty motorway is far more serious.

The use of ANPR (which this van has) is powerful in stopping the larger criminals and known thieves. Criminals have to travel so the more they can be tracked on their location, these “flagged” vehicles will be stopped, searched and wanted suspects arrested. Remember Jack the Ripper was caught because of his number plate, it’s a useful tool. Unfortunately the only way we can get more police on the streets is to increase our council tax, but we’d all moan about that too.
ANPR is great on travelling police vehicles which are ready to act. By chance we drove by our stolen van on the motorway (with a new number plate 8 hours after going missing). When the thief recognised another van with the same sign writing they erratically pulled off the motorway, down a slip road, smashed in to 2 cars, drove off and was never seen again and we never heard a thing back on it after reporting all this as it was happening. Surely a white Mercedes sprinter with a red Nissan micra registration plate travelling down one of the biggest motorways in Britain should have been picked up by a fixed ANPR camera? No because they don’t spend money on them or policing them because they won’t make as much money as mobile speed camera vans. The mobile speeding camera vans and the operators in them will have a huge set up and running cost which is mainly spent as the vans make money. Real officers fighting real crime is what we need. Can those vans detect a drink driver weaving all over the road doing 50 on the motorway in an old banger that just scraped through its MOT. No. Can actual police cars with actual officers driving around the roads looking for all forms of crime. Yes. The money being spent on the mobile speed vans is purely profit driven.
The issue with speed control is that it is taking your mind off controlling the car and observing the driving environment. When a speed camera van is seen the first thing I do is check my speed. How long does it take? Rather than having police vans maybe a better system would be to have tech built into the car to warn of overspeed or control the throttle/brake to stop you going over speed. Sat navs can do the audible warning but it needs to be upto date. Road works are difficult and the average speed assessment types are a night mare. So it makes me annoyed to have a police Sargent say no one else is to blame but you. I bet you have gone above 33 mph many times mr Sargent.

@@davidm793 Police have no interest in revenue - every single penny goes into The Treasury. Speeding fines equate to around £100m a year (non-Covid years that is), however the national debt currently stands at more than £2,004 billion, so more than £2 trillion. No-one is interested in the pocket change generated by speed cameras.

I never knew about the camera on the top to catch bikes. Clever! I wonder if Karen zapped me on the A38. My laser detector went off. Luckily I wasn't speeding. And fair play to Devon & Cornwall police for getting involved and running through the kit - as well as the useful lecture at the end on thinking distances.
The roof mounted camera was originally mounted on the inside of the windscreen, or they just looked out of the window and wrote down the VRM.

You can definitely fight it in court and you'd probably win if you have evidence, such as dash cam footage etc.

There is no requirement whatsoever for warning signs at or near mobile speed camera sites. You cannot fight it in court.

So long as it is advertised that they will or might be doing speed checks on a stretch of road in the media be it internet or news paper it is legal most have a camera sign on the stretch of roads any rate meaning it's legal and don't forget don't speed can't complain otherwise. Yes I do speed

Between these and average speed cameras surely Safety goes out the window and accidents go through the roof as drivers focus more on their speedometer than the road ahead. Driving somewhere you don't know nowadays is like juggling 5 balls looking out for what speed you should be doing at any given time, trying to decipher the road ahead, traffic lights, crossings, bus lanes, cameras etc. I used to enjoy driving but now they have killed all enjoyment and replaced it with stress and anxiety for people just trying to be sensible and earn a living
As a driver your focus is the road ahead and that's where the posted threshold will be. Why would you need to keep looking out any differently than simply doing what you'd be doing anyway?
Mobile speed enforcement has been out there for a couple of decades, nothing has changed.

Although I haven't been in and driven in the UK for 20 years now, moved to Thailand, I found this video very informative and fascinating.
A few years back I was driving on a road I used quite a lot its very steep and downhill, there was a white van sign written like it was a builders vehicle, The back doors were wide open revealing a speed camera, it was left like that for a few hours, obviously someone realised what they were up to. I myself had got a speeding ticket on the same road prior to this and I could never remember seeing a police speed camera van. I realised as soon as I saw the ‘builders van’ that was the one that got me. Very sneaky move by the police!

@@unleashthedragonwithin2057 It's an unmarked van with a camera at the back window (single window on one of the two rear doors). On the two occasions I've seen it it has been parked alongside areas where speeding is common. Maybe I'm putting two and two together to make five.

Police don't take any of the money, the fines go to The Treasury via Conditional Offer Unit and course fees are paid direct to the course provider. A card slot would be pointless.

When I got caught speeding the van was in a farmers field on a bend totally hidden, 30mph limit doing 36mph (got the picture) road conditions, dry road empty of all human and animal life, from that day on I always refer the police as the Revenue collection agency (RCA) well rules are rules and I broke one but the speeding awareness course afterwards which was conducted by 2 ex police officers left me with the impression that I and others were funding their lucrative life styles.
You were adding to their monthly income, but ultimately it was a choice you made.
I know some who was nicked two mph over thirty coming out of a village. He was accelerating toward the higher speed limit . He assured me he was under 30 mph through the village. He had to undertake a speed awareness course and lost valuable wages toward mortgage and family costs . They are revenue raising plain and simple. Cars are safer now than ever before . No wonder people suddenly don't see serious crime or help the police . The working man pays for everything and yet the bone idle and lazy prosper .

@@johnniethepom2905 You know someone who claimed to have got a notice for 2mph over - they were however just embellishing the story. Constabularies who are National Scheme members who offer the course option must observe the same criteria to maintain continuity across the country.

@@user-ec3gj1lw9z No, you confuse the cause of a collision with the cause of death - impact speed is most certainly the factor in a crash that determines the level of physical trauma, varying factors not withstanding. The faster you hit something, the more inertia there is that has to be dissipated.
Of course, not every collision is the same, combined with the design and build of the relevant vehicles, hence the reason why some walk away, whilst others leave on their back in a bag, or in several bags.
Up 80mph plus 80mph equals a killing speed of 160mph in a head on, only the undertaker will be laughing

Fizzy Purple people report them when they are sat there. Every time I’ve come across one of these speed cameras I’ve known about it well in advance.

Until people have to take regular eyesight tests and a practical driving test every 10 years accidents will not decrease ffs its not rocjet science
Your car odometer will read 30mph, the actual true speed of the vehicle will be 27mph. The camera van will also give you a percentage of tolerance over the limit.
So if you stay within the odometer limit you are significantly below a speed at which you can be prosecuted. Don’t speed. Don’t give your hard earned money away.
When I once diagnosed charging problems (alternator) on vehicles, I would ask the driver if the charging light was on full or half brilliance (can help diagnosis) I was amazed at how many drivers told me that they do not know, because they never looked at the dashboard. This admission led me to believe that they probably were also not monitoring their road speed.

Yeah I understand that speeding kills but you can’t judge someone else’s thinking time based on your own opinion. A lot of people that drive at a faster speed watch the cars wayyyyy ahead of them to ensure they have a better reaction time.
Its that difference in speed. If you got fast reactions you're going to stop quicker at 70 but still have the same reaction time if you're driving at 90 so the difference is still the same

In my experience the vast majority don’t. Speeding isn’t synonymous with good driving and often (probably more frequently) it’s the opposite.
The point I think being made in the video is that reaction times are the same irrespective of speed, meaning that a faster car will travel more distance before the reacting driver starts to apply the brakes. He’s correct of course.

I just wondered, that if you are driving by a sat nav, I have noticed that a sat nav will show you are driving at 30 mph when the car speedometer indicates about 33 mph, so which is correct and does the police camera verify this?
The camera will simply provide the vehicle's speed rounded down to the nearest whole number. If your vehicle is on a gradient, your sat-nav will not provide an accurate reading.

That may be so,but on this video he was demonstrating the thinking distance not the braking distance ie the average distance you go between seeing a hazard,processing that information and start to brake, not the braking distance.You have to add the braking distance to the thinking distance.
Also all speed limits brake distance etc where based on cars of the time the 70 mph limit is because the car used in the test could not go any faster without scarying the driver at the time not some scientific research
@Josh Ryder You act like distracted drivers dont kill going legal speeds. MOST people who are speeding are safer because they are actually concentrating on the road. Meanwhile Karen swerving in her lane at 70mph and being totally unaware of her surroundings because shes talking/dealing with her kids or being on the phone etc... Majority of accidents on the autobahn where people regularly go at 150-180mph+ on a daily basis are mainly crashes caused by inexperienced drivers unnecessarily entering the inside lane, and people falling asleep. Crashes that are caused by the speeding it self are minimal to NONE.
As a sidenote, people speeding in residential areas are the problem, not speeding on the motorways and carriage ways that are flat, and straight...

@@phillkirby a navigation app that is updated live by community, so worth having, you can mark on the map anything like objects/potholes/police/accident etc and so can anyone else using the app and it shows up for a fair amount of time so you can rely on it for everything. Definitely worth getting especially as it’s free too

Firstly, I haven't been done by the plod for speeding, but why do a lot of them sit on major dual carriageways or M-Ways doing people on what are the safest roads. The dual A64, the A3, M74 - the list goes on. And if its about safety why not put a fixed camera there?
possibly because of the chaos closing a dual carriageway/motorway causes. M8 was closed for 12 hours both east & west bound after somebody died in the crash.
A64 Malton Bypass. They are on the Bridge over the road. Motor bikes after Scarborough road races is a fantastic time for them. ££££££££££££££££££. It pays for a new camera in a day.
Is there a protocol about how near a speed detector device can be to a 'speed change' sign?? My satnav ,and my car, can tell me the max speed of that road location. When I drive from unrestricted (60mph) into a 30mph area I see a sign and slow down to pass the sign at 30, can a detector be put right at the sign location??
No protocol. However, the kit does not work where it is located, the minimum distance it operates is 20m+.
Some forces have their own rules such as tvp do not park their van's within 100 meters of a terminal sign

I'm an advanced driver of 42 years and I have to admit that I speed everyday and jump red lights (early of course) but I still think these guys do a great job. Most people who speed are shit drivers, have no observational road reading skills, drive shit cars and just put their foot down and hope for the best. When I go out to make a journey in my car I always walk around the car to check my tyres. If I approach the car from the front I always walk around the back of the car to make sure there is no obstacle or more importantly a person behind the car. If I pull away on the road I check behind by using my mirrors but I always look over my shoulder as mirrors have blind spots. I was surprised when I had advanced driving lessons and then took my advanced test that most of the stuff I learned was just basically common sense such as, don't drive too close, slow down when it's wet or dark or both, use brakes to slow down instead of gears as you can control the vehicle more easily and safely with brakes than gears and brakes are cheaper to renew than a clutch and so on. These guys do a necessary job in areas where residents are are worried about their kids being knocked down by speeding idiots who can't drive.

To be fair, the Police aren’t forcing anyone to speed and everyone behind a wheel knows the rules of the road. I’ll confess to speeding occasionally but when I do I know I can’t complain if I get caught.
It’s important the speed limits are policed and there are consequences for exceeding them. Otherwise even more people than already do would drive way above their capability level and/or demonstrate poor judgement.
The reason they have a forward facing camera now is so no one pinches their front number plate and puts it on their car and then keep driving past the camera van over the speed limit lol

If on a motorbike riding towards the front of the van, if you was being a bit fruity then saw the van and slowed down, would the front camera still pickup the speed on approach even if you dropped it before reaching that camera at the back ?

Travelled 277 miles from Essex to Blackpool the other night.
Felt like 99% of that trip was on motorway sections with variable and average speed limits. So in the 4.5 hours it took me to get home, late at night on clear roads I was subject to ridiculous limits of 40 or 50mph!
Im now waiting for a potential letter to arrive informing me how many points I have.
These pointless limits were up and down like a yoyo and totally frustrating, as were the rolling Road blocks (lorries overtaking lorries both at 60mph).
This isn't about safety, it's about the gov making car journeys difficult maybe under the pretence of emissions!

This means that when B's motor vehicle speedo was showing 34mph, they were actually only doing just over 31mph. Without such a spirit guide, I couldn't have known this.

Went passed one if these on the opposite side of the dual carriageway earlier. He was head on looking at my car. I was going above the soeed limit when I spotted him but slowed down by the time I passed the window at the rear. Would this it of had me ?

I'm not sure but I think the camera would have to be calibrated for vehicles moving away from it rather than coming to it.
They would have also have had to get a "lock" on you so if you were slowed when passing it you should be fine! 👍
@@pup1008 there is no special calibration required to catch vehicles. Travelling away from the laser and these vans are quite capable of catching vehicles travelling towards it and also away from it. However, like the OP said they slow down before they passed the back of the vehicle so they should be fine.

Karen the tax collector - could never morally do this job or a parking inspector - just not right. We all speed sometimes but often drop back down to the right speed when we notice it. Most people who are caught are people who have never knowingly sped in the past. If we constantly look at the speedo we would constantly have a collision.

With Laser guns from bridges you get cosine effect this will give a lower reading so is in favor of the driver.
Doppler effect only applies to radar based technology not laser.

A hot spot here was hidden away on the other side of a fly over / bridge that used to coincide with a speed limit change from 60 to 40 and on a dual carriage way which was 30, but a lot of people believed it to be 40. I would 100% support zero tolerance around schools etc but it does seem that on occasions, different vans are deliberately trying to catch people out.
There is no data to support speed enforcement around schools.

I think I was just caught today, driving around the speed limit all day, stopped for a red light and decided to have a bit of fun and floor it for a few seconds, went past a corner and saw a bloody speed camera van facing me, obviously I slammed on the brakes, but I heard that once you have seen them, they already have your speed recorded. I know I was going fast, but I have no idea how fast as I only looked at the speedo when I had slowed down. Been driving 8 years and no offences so I'm literally praying I only get a speed awareness course. 🤞

I really enjoy slowing down relative to how close someone is behind me. They seem to get quite excited too, so everyone's a winner.
Surely it’s a bit pointless saying that the van is painted in bright colours when they measure your speed instantly when you pop into view a kilometre away, before you even have chance to react?
At the end of the day if you break the speed limit it’s a risk that you take that you get caught, but a van can hardly be seen as a deterrent if they use that kilometre range to ambush people as they come around corners.
I guess maybe the idea of telling people 1km is so that they act as a deterrent for the whole time the van is in view. I think it depends on the copper how quickly they snap you when u come into view. I’ve come across lots of these vans speeding and managed to slow down enough all but two of the times, so I reckon they must give some leeway..
@@ciaranoloan6199 They don't go much into technique in this video, but typically they aim the laser at the point a car comes into view, to be able to take a reading instantly.
If you can see the van, it's already too late.
They do not work on motorcycles from 1km, bikes have to be 500-600 metres to get an accurate reading by which time any observant biker would have seen these revenue makers ! 😁

All the additional CCTV cameras are running if the operator leaves them on. Yes, they are just like any other camera footage submitted by the public that results in prosecution - but it isn't reviewed at the end of the working day to see if offences were recorded.

Try driving in Somerset. The speed limit varies hugely between 20 M.P.H. and 60 M.P.H. and just for amusement they are changed from time to time. I spend far more time, effort and concentration trying to work out what the speed limit is than I do looking at the road. Very dangerous indeed! With all the money they must rake in from speeding fines it is no wonder the Somerset and Avon police have such big balls.
Im all for preventing speeding in built up areas, outside shops, schools, homes etc where it actually matters. However these vans usually sit on dual carriageways or other long stretches of road where there visibility might be obscured for approaching traffic. They just go for easy targets

Can't afford to send an Officer out to investigate a reported crime, but one is able to sit all day in a very expensively equipped van, usually in a remote spot, raising revenue.
The mobile camera operators a trained police staff so regular officers are free for more important duties, and the van and equipment cost the police nothing as it's self funded, they are no put in places to make money they are put in places where there is a problem with speeding.
If the police don't attend a minor crime immediately it's not because they can't afford its because they're massively under staffed.

For part 2 can you ask if the speed gun works at night time as the head light from the car would make me think it would blur/dazzle the video footage on the speed gun and if it can read spaced out number plates please

Some police forces have been testing a new gun that works at night and are getting rolled out this year, at £1OK a pop
I am curious about that, cause I know the lasers used by stuff like speed guns operate outside the visible light spectrum, but some lights release a lot of stuff like UV light that you can't see in addition to the light you can. I doubt there's any kind of dazzle effect though, after all, lasers and visible light are very far away from eachother in wavelength I'm fairly certain.
They spend 10k of tax payers money on a camera just to steal more money off poor tax payers
@@markmawson1 from what I’ve heard they place the van where a community of people report speeding, there’s a sharp bend 5 minutes from me and many times people speed round there so the police put a camera van just after that bend
It's amazing all this technology available to make money but if your house gets broken into all you get is a crime number. This makes me feel very safe.
