maybe though I have seen a lot of times the stuff people can get away with if they are charismatic. It sounds like OP is shy and doesn't speak up for herself and the ex was charismatic as is the new girl. They are the life of the party and have won over a lot of people. Also possibly the other problem with small towns is the ex is probably from the town/area while OP is an out of towner which also creates a large barrier.
