  • Thousands of teenagers will be heading into schools today to pick up their GCSE results and find out just how they fared in their exams. Exams regulator Ofqual has said a return to pre-pandemic grading means this year’s national GCSE results in England will be lower than last year and similar to grades in 2019. It got us thinking about pushy parents, and whether it is ever ok to bribe your kids to achieve the top grades? Kaye’s under the impression that no amount of bribery will make a child work hard unless they want to do it for themselves, and Jane will be reflecting on how she ‘scraped by’ at school, only ever doing the bare minimum to pass her exams. Denise, who was too busy having fun to feel the pressure of exams in her teens, reveals why there was never any high tension on results day in her household.

Offering positive reinforcements like rewards is a great way to encourage kids and works much better than scolding and punishments. Nobody likes school, we never did, so help them get through it

No different than getting a paycheck for doing work, everybody has to be motivated by something

I wasn't bribed ahead of time, but i would be punished after the fact...particularly when my parents were told I was lazy (true!) And not working to my potential (also true!)
Clothes were always my favorite thing so I was told no new clothes until my reports improved.
I certainly didn't NEED any new clothes but i def wanted them badly enough to improve.
And they would never have insisted upon it if they thought I'd been doing my best.

this reminds me of when in year 9, I kept getting ds in maths, and my dad took my phone away on weekdays, and kept snooping through my maths homework until my grade got better. But recently, I watch this CZcams video on "signs that you have dyscalculia" and I had 6 of the 20 symptoms; and one of the treatments for it was sensory based maths learning. Had I known I was a dycalculiac since I started school, I would've done *so* much better at maths, and my dad wouldn't have been so hard on me 😭

I wouldn’t call it a ‘bribe’ it’s more of a reward for their achievements. My eldest son & daughter have just received their GCSE & A Level results & I did say to them both that I would reward them with an amount of money for every grade A they received. This was NOT a bribe or something to make them try harder. They both worked hard regardless & all of my children know that all I expect is for them to do their best…that’s all anyone can do.
My son achieved the equivalent of grades B & C but my daughter got A, B & C! They were proud of themselves but I have yet to hand over the money to my daughter for her grade A 😜

Mental and physical health first not exam results. Yes .. there should be 10'000 gifted to every leaving school child .. that graduates.. to set them up in whatever they love doing, their brains are seeking wisdom ..travel is an education, a job is an education, college is an education, setting up a business from a band to a coffee stand .. running a home as in a flat, having money is an education, no experience goes to waste. I am sure hard working parents and grandparents and the community would not mind if our tax went on such a cause.

Oh gods... those spellings. I'm pretty alright at spelling but I need more than 15 seconds to retrieve and write it down right.
