I agree with everyone but torts. He doesn’t mess around, he holds the players accountable no special treatments, just hard work and most amount of teamwork. He also stands up and defends his players when media are trying to make something out of nothing, even defends his players on the ice giving the refs hell when they should have made the call. Plus of course, he isn’t cliche with the media which is great cause they really do ask stupid questions.

Keenan should have been #1. He'll go down in history as the only coach who won a Stanley Cup and was basically fired during the off-season. The explanation was that Rangers management failed to pay him a contract bonus, voiding his contract. The real reason was that the players turned on him, to the point where he was actually banned from practices by the players, who won the championship despite him.

Pretty sure Tortorella isn't as hated as it seems, even amongst players. One huge factor that contributes to his reputation is that he is very harsh on reporters who ask stupid questions and in return they retaliate when they write articles about him or when they are summoned on a panel and find a way to bash him live. Over time I've seen the other side of Torts that we rarely see in the medias: he is 100% invested in his team's success, very humane behind the scenes, spends time and money on charities... Without the media, we as fans would not be able to watch the games. I agree that there are a lot of dumb questions asked to coaches and players alike. But acting like a baby about it is indeed childish. Especially for a man who so obviously focused on being a tough professional, yet he throws more tantrums than anyone out there.
He's also threatened to punish players if they ever protested police brutality via sitting out for the anthem. And of course he made this statement while having a black player on his team. Looking it up, I see he finally reversed his stance on that, sort of. He seems to still think he should be making the final call on what a player will be allowed to do though. "I would hope that if one of my players wanted to protest during the anthem, he would bring it to me and we would talk about it, tell me his thoughts and what he wanted to do." Sorry, John, this still isn't about you.

You know, I’ve actually always got a kick out of Tortorella. A lot of sports reporters ask dumb questions (yeah, as an Oilers fan, we have to deal with Mark Spector). So, I can totally get why Torts gets annoyed with them. I personally never really have heard of any issues with Torts and any of his players, and from what I gather, most enjoy(ed) him as a coach and respected him.
As for the rest, yeah they are/were pretty terrible all around coaches.

You are either misinformed to what actually happened, or you're purposely leaving out several facts. I'm guessing a little bit of both because it looks like you probably blindly trust the media which is pretty ridiculous. Maybe I'm wrong but lets clear a few things up.
First off, it was a WORLD TOURNAMENT, not an NHL game like you misrepresented it as. These kids and coaches are representing their country, not the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 2016 the US was very much divided because of the lies the media was putting out there. World games, the World Cup, the Olympics etc are a time for coming together and having fun, a time for heeling and remembering the good. Not for playing follow the leader behind a washed up football player who's throwing temper tantrums because he's on his way out of the NFL and for media attention and endorsements from NIKE a company that still participates in child labor crimes. Did you know that Johns son Nick is a member in the U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment? Did you know at the time of the tournament that John was coaching that Nick was over seas? Yeah if my son was in the military in harms way while coaching in a WORLD TOURNAMENT I would tell the players on my team that "if you sit on the bench during the anthem you will sit during the game". Did you also know that Torts never told them they couldn't talk to the media or voice their concerns or opinions on what was going on. He never tried to stop their freedom of speech. Did you know that Seth Jones (the black player you're talking about) when goated by the media about the whole situation said "I'm just here to play hockey" and "I think it's fair" that Torts made that rule. He cares about the anthem, and regardless of your opinion he has skin in the game. People should think before the comment or "protest" things they don't understand.
When you say "police brutality"? You mean when the media and a portion of the population ASSume the police were wrong and being racist because race is all they think about and play on 24/7 without knowing all the facts? Yeah and then when all the evidence comes out proving them wrong in 90% of these cases they bury the story when it doesn't go their way, or they straight up lie. I watched it with the Kyle Rittenhouse case. Watched the entire trial, and so did the media, but they call him a racist murderer when all he did was defend himself against 3 WHITE men including a pedo. Pretty sure this was 2016 and the "protests" were mostly about the Michael Brown case. Well turns out Michael not only assaulted and stole from the poor little store owner but then not only disobeyed police orders he tried to physically attack the cop and take his gun. People lying saying he was shot in the back as he was "running for his life". Dammit, here comes that pesky forensic report. Oh look, seems Mr. Brown was shot in the chest being as it's super easy to tell the difference between an entrance wound and an exit wound. But hey, facts only matter when they agree with the lefts opinion.
This is why I know longer call myself a democrat or liberal even though these people are far left loons and nowhere near being a classic liberal. I still support several policies on both sides, but this has become crybaby bullshit. Spoiled idiots complaining about how bad they got when they've never actually been to other countries especially 3rd world countries. Scream oppression without knowing what oppression actually is. I loved how when Trump announced his run for POTUS in 2015 about a hundred Hollywood actors said they would leave the U.S. if he got elected. How many left? 1!! One of them left and he wasn't even gone a year and he was a Mexican citizen anyways lol. Now why do you think that is? Maybe because these people have been around the world and know just how bad it is outside of the U.S. lol.

That he said it in the context of an international tournament doesn't change anything. Americans have protested the anthem in the Olympics before. Its not new. There were lots of protests getting snuffed out in most recent Men's World Cup. Iran in particular made gestures on the field and statements in the press. Then there was also the US team in the women's World Cup who also had their own kneelings during the anthem. And of course, long before that is the very famous photo with Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists instead of covering their heart while on the podium to receive gold and bronze medals as the American anthem played. Sports and politics are inseparable. You want to speak about how its all about unity. Was the Miracle on Ice about the unity of America vs Russia? Or did that turn into a large symbol of America's superiority over its bitter political rival in Russia? This isn't Barney & Friends.
But you can also read Tortorella's quote on his backpedal a few years later and its clear that his 'threat' didn't apply to just games at international stages, that he "learned over the years" and his perspective on it has changed. So I appreciate your correction on the matter, but ultimately it doesn't change anything.
"Blindly trust the media" what a productive comment. You realize I could just as easily dismiss everything you said as a brainwashing too, right? Where does that leave us then?
What's really weird though is you initially try to act like the fact that it was at the international stage is a key point. Yet, you still feel the urge to go on and on about how you don't believe in the movement. So I'd venture to guess you don't ACTUALLY care about international level vs NHL level, that really you're just mad that anyone is doing it to begin with.
And yes, I knew that "John's" son (first name basis with him, eh? lolz) was/is in the military. That doesn't mean crap though. Do YOU realize it was a military member who suggested to Kaep that he kneel to begin with? It's fine if "John" has a different perspective on what the anthem means to him. If he wishes to stand to respect his son, he is free to do that. But the flag for everyone else is not just about "John's" son.
Please don't define what I think is police brutality. You're clearly awful at it. Why are you even talking about Rittenhouse, wtf? Your rant is only more reason and evidence that these protests and statements need to be had. And then you went into rambling about celebrities threatening to leave if Trump got elected?? What are you even on about now? I don't give a crap if you're republican or democrat, dude.

    • @moappleseider1699
      @moappleseider1699 Před rokem +1

@@IRanOutOfPhrases You're not wrong about the world stage as far as sports and protests go, but everything is relative and this situation is different from the next. He has a son in the military who's MOS is pretty dangerous. His son has had to bury friends killed in combat. Tort's made a rule for players who play on his team. Entire teams have sillier rules than that. You can't grow facial hair if you play for the Yankees just for example. All he said was stand for the anthem. He told the players they can do whatever they want aside from that. And if he has that rule for his NHL teams to then oh well. There was no threat. It was a rule. I don't care what women's soccer does at all. I don't care what NFL players do. All these people have the right to free speech. But if the NHL (and I know I'm not alone in this) starts shoving BLM or any other political garbage into the game to the point that the NFL was doing, or the NHL has tried in the past I will turn it off. They tried that shit during the start of the playoffs during the COVID bubble and we did turn it off, and they lost ratings and lots of money, and then they cut that shit out real fast. I'm not mad but I have the freedom to spend my time doing something else. Hollywood does the same thing and I just refuse to watch their political BS.
You're complaining about an NHL coach who doesn't agree with your political interests lol. That's your reason for not liking him. That was what your "rant" was all about. I'm not mad at all buddy. I know for a fact that there is actual police brutality. I've personally had encounters with dirty cops and witnessed it myself, and I have no problem with it being fixed or protesting it. But shoving your politics down peoples throats will not end well when it comes to sports. I also don't have to support spoiled athlete's bitching about every case that rubs them the wrong way when they don't know all the facts yet. They take a knee on Sunday but don't do anything the rest of the week to fix a broken community? Also crying about the cops while ignoring the fact that there are major problems in the black community or that over 50% of violent crime in America is committed by young black males who make up a fraction of the population is pretty ridiculous.
"Blindly trust the media" what a productive comment. You realize I could just as easily dismiss everything you said as a brainwashing too, right?" and
"Please don't define what I think is police brutality. You're clearly awful at it." are laughable. In what way? Because I don't just listen to the news? Because I follow the cases and do a little research? Well golly I guess I don't know what I'm talking about then lol. How dare my stupid ass question the narrative of the MSM who puts their own political interests as priority #1 over reporting the truth and they do it constantly. I can make an educated guess as to what "you think police brutality is" but you more than likely aren't very keen as to what you're talking about. It's often people who are ignorant of a situation that are the loudest ones about it. Did you grow up in the ghetto? I did. Did you grasp the full scope of the situation of what happens there? I do. The cops aren't the only ones who bothered me, and I hate to tell you this but they weren't the ones I had to worry about the most. I brought up Rittenhouse as an example of the media being full of shit. I brought up the celebrities because they are full of shit. If you can't comprehend how that relates to what I'm saying then I can't help you. You can give me shit for calling a couple guys by their first name but it's all good when you refer to that moron as "Kaep" hahaha.

Yay he coached a stacked Red Wings team to a Stanley Cup, and then choked 2 games in 2009. Mike Babcock is the reason why Chris Osgood didn't win a 4th cup, 3rd as a starter, and isn't in the hall of fame. Babcock is 1 and 4 all time in Stanley Cup Finals clinching games. 1 and 4. 5 times he's played a game that could have clinched the Stanley Cup, 1 with Anahiem in 03, 2 with Detroit in both 08 and 09. Real legend there... and he's 0-2 in Stanley Cup Finals Game 7's also. He played too conservatively, would try and score a few goals and then just sit back like it's a soccer game and then blow a lead, or just never be aggressive enough early in games when it was 0-0. He absofuckinglutely will be in the Hall of Fame unfortunately... you would assume, he's ironically beloved by some but yeah, Detroit and Toronto fans and probably Anaheim fans too despise him for choking constantly. To be fair, Mike Keenan should have been #2 on this list, if not #1. He was a violent man who also destroyed one franchise he did coach. Most of the others at least put their teams forward in the long run.
Tortorella was definitely not a safe person to be around. When he yells, you could hear him from the other side of the city. And his players either get the message, get intimidated, or quit.
As for Babcock, he did pull one antic that crossed the line and destroyed his integrity, but except for that, he did nothing unacceptable. He wasn't as violent as Keenan, but he was intimidating enough. Still, most of his team respected him.
But one missing name from this list was Scotty Bowman. He deliberately got adversarial and intimidating with his players, so they hated him 364 days a year, the 365th being the one they pick up their Stanley Cup ring.

My thoughts as a (relatively) well-informed outsider who played the game at a decent level:
Babcock and Keenan are plain psychopaths
Hitchcock, at least here in STL, seemed demanding but respectful of players. I know a few people who have met him and never heard anything bad. He’s a hockey savant who might understand Xs and Os better than anyone else alive. But he does seem like he’s a perfectionist and stubborn and I can see how that can get old. Im also don’t think he’s the best at personal relationships, even if he’s far from the worst
Everything I’ve seen from Tortorella makes him seem like a kind of coach I would love to play for, but as for perfectionism and stubbornness, see my comments on Hitch. I could also see how that would suck if you end up on his bad side
Wilson just seems like he ran into two players who had long careers of being coach killers. But idk much else about him
Crawford, I don’t know much about him

Was thinking of him too. Not recent enough. I’m assuming the CZcamsr is pretty young. I’m surprised he knew enough to put Keenan on the list.

I made a negative comment, here's my positive one about Keenan to highlight his earned reputation:
This story doesn't seem to exist on the internet anywhere, I read it in a book by a guy who had a lot of inside Blackhawks knowledge over a prolonged period of time. I believe the story involved Chelios and another player breaking curfew during a road trip. They were caught by Keenan, who was very strict with such things (you can find a deadspin article with Roenick talking about other examples.) Keenan didn't seem to say anything to the Chelios, so he thought he was off the hook. He was even in the starting line-up. Then after roughly a minute on the ice, he came to the bench for a change, but Keenan ordered him to stay out there. Ended up getting punished with a shift that went well beyond 5 minutes. Brutal and funny.
There's another story of Keenan doing a similar thing with Kovalev years later. Although in that story, people suggest that Kovalev thought he was being rewarded, not realizing it was a punishment, haha

Thats actually not quite true with the steve moore incident
there was a game in between amd nothing happened.
Also there are questions if he really did " encourage" his players to go after steve moore

Great list!! Keenan, Torts have to be the worst two. Crawford, Babcock, Orval Tessier definitely too. Orval Tessier told the media his players need about 20 heart transplants after Chicago lost the first 2 games of the 1983 Campbell conference finals vs the Edmonton Oilers. BTW Brett Hull and Phil Kessel are not exactly the most coachable players, although I'd give an 85 goal scorer a free pass. Kessel also got Randy Carlyle fired.

I got this 3rd hand, but I THINK Dave Manson slammed Keenan into a locker, during one of his rants. (Manson traded a short while later)

As a Canucks fan I hate Keenan the most . Him and Messier can pound sand. Trevor Linden's trade was travesty.
