To be fair to Stefan, the puck obviously hits a rut and jumps his stick. The problem was his decision to try and "be safe" by skating the puck into the goal instead of just firing it in, as soon as he was clear of everyone.
If he did score that goal, the Oilers probably draft Patrick Kane in the following entry draft. Though if their decade of despair ran its course he would have wanted out a few years later.
He skate to the net like that to take more time. He play the clock. Because less time it left to the game, left chance the other team have to come back.

Settle down there chief. Good compilation of information, but “one of the best hockey videos”? Not a snowballs chance in hell. Tons of bad edits. He showed the same Berard goal with the Islanders at least twice, once while talking about his time with another team. He talked about Chris Phillips and Chara becoming the best shutdown pair while showing footage of several net mouth scrambles with Ottawa forward Marian Hossa in the OFFENSIVE ZONE.
The Lindros trade led to Peter Forsberg going to Quebec and becoming a key player for Colorado’s dominance and two cup wins after that.
sadly his injuries makes him a forgotten legend, a GOAT of ice hockey internationally for the olympics and sweden team aspect, but NHL he'll be remembered as 2nd team all-star by those who didn't witness. He is a true legend. But Pat Lafontaine and Cam Neely, sh*t happened.
@@WithScienceAsMySheperd What are you talking about. Forsberg is 9th in NHL history in PPG, he's in the HOF, he's got 2 Stanley Cup's,, a Calder, Art Ross and a Hart and the +/- weird one. Except for winning the Con smythe, I'm not sure what else you want from him.

Man I swear the 90s were the best decade for hockey. The sport boomed. Anyone that was a teen and got a copy of Eastbay could flip through and see all of the jerseys. Not just the NHL, but all the minors as well. You get multiple expansions. My hometown Red Wings become a dynasty, but not before getting buzzsawed by an expansion San Jose team. The 95 finals against New Jersey and we got whooped. You get the growth in video games like the NHL series from EA. Same thing with cards. So many hockey cards. My favorite being the Score Pinnacle goalie mask set. So many Hall of Famers, superstars, busts, etc. Then you have the explosion in jersey sales. When you started seeing hip hop stars wearing hockey jerseys on MTV, you had to have one like you had to have a Starter pullover.
The 90s were the trap decade. Hockey today is way better.

I always remember the fight between Lecalvier and Iginla in the stanley cup finals.
How could anyone who's lived through the 90's not remember Daigle? We had the hockey cards that showed his massive point totals in junior leagues, he was meant to be the Next One.
Why such a drastic difference compared to his dominating play in junior? Did the money go to his head or was there another reason. I heard he never wanted to play hockey but was forced into it by his parents, is this a known thing or just speculation?

I always liked him as a player, and don't have a problem with players who can't match the hype that gets thrown their way by scouts who may not have anyone better or more dynamic to about.
My older brothers had 2 Daigle rookie cards and some magazine had them appraised at about 50-60 €/USD in todays currency at some point in the 90's. My brothers were thinking about selling one of the cards but decided to wait instead. Next appraisal comes in, card is worth less than two bucks lol.

As for Daigle who grew up in my hometown, you must know that this is the classical story of a son living his father's dream. He was bless with a wonderful talent but never like to play the game! Sad really!

The Wade Redden trade was a 3-way between the Sens, Leafs, and Islanders. The Leafs got Beaupre (OTT) & Muller (NYI); the Isles got Belanger (TOR); Berard & Straka (OTT), the Sens got Redden (NYI) & Rhodes (TOR)
Bryan Berrard > Wade Redden = Kirk Muller = Martin Straka > modern Don Beaupre = Damian Rhodes = Jesse Belanger ... as for : 1980s Don Beaupré ? among the GOAT tier :P (he was a fan fave in my quebec town among friends)
Future Considerations probably the most underrated player imo
Daigle had Yashin and Alfredsson. Was probably the biggest dissappointment of all the players I ever pulled for. He had everything and could never put it together. Like he could never fully process the NHL game. Yashin to me became that Corbin Bernson Character in the movie Major League. Got points did the minimum. Daniel always had heart and put out an effort. Daigle had legs like tree trunks. I had always wondered what went wrong with him.

Wish my collection did not go missing. I had a lot of collectors in 1973-74.Traded something like 6 Guy Lafleur rookie cards for a Bobby Orr. Looked really good. I still had a bunch of Guy's rookie cards and Pereault rookie cards. Big fan of the French Connection. I had a couple cards from the 60's and never knew the value. Was quite a while ago I had seen Guy's cards go for more than 175.00. More than 25 years ago.@@Roskismummo
Daigle was a major talent he just lost his passion for hockey pretty early on which is a shame..

That Lindross trade helped Colorado win multiple cups while Philly got swept by the Red Wings. Great player. But Philly gave up way too much to get him. He should have just stayed. Wonder how much different the avs would have been has Lindross been there?
What makes the real difference is the Patrick Roy trade to Colorado ? With Roy in the net all the defensive problem where gone away ! Avs got enough Offensive talent in their team with Sakic and Forsberg. Also the favor the bruins did to Ray Bourque. Help too. It's not fun for the Québec Nordiques fans altrought. they lost their NHL teams even if the support a mediocre team for years but when they sold their team anyway for 75 M$ USD to Comcast in Colorado.
A new team in Québec city is now around 1 000 M$ USD. They should have keep it when they have it but Marcel Aubut decide to sell it instead late the first salary cap happened. liminiting the expense of club which we had help to Québec Nordiques to survive.
IMHO , The only chance the Québec Nordiques has to go back in the NHL is to do the same thing they did to get a team in the NHL. i.e. Start a new league outside the NHL grow the league let the NHL Buy the league and gets the team in the league to join the NHL.

Who can forget Alexandre Daigle! He is my favorite player ever! He played junior in my hometown "Tiges de Victoriaville" and he was AMAZING, he was flying on the ice! What a show!
The hype behind him was insane leading up to the draft and the summer before the next season kicked off. His rookie card was being hyped up like Ken Griffey jr.

@@RealMaxoou262 They were expecting Moginly or Bure numbers from him in his rookie season but Ottawa didn't have much of a supporting cast, and being the next big thing puts a target on your back for cheap shots. Put 2 solid stars with him and his career would have been entirely different.

Excellent video. Only issue is that you (many young fans also) judge defensemen based on points far too much. In order for a team to have success in the playoffs especially, they need defensemen that defend. It’s an undervalued skill by todays fans.

It's still a waste of draft position if you pick very early defenceman who can't score points. It needs to be atleast Chris Pronger level offence to be good first overall pick.

There were periods when Lindros was a Ranger where he was back to his elite level, playing without fear, but then he was concussed again after the hit and fight with Jason Doig and it was really over for him.
His 1st year with NYR he was still an all star and deservedly so. When was the Doig fight? 02-03?
The thing with Daigle is that he went first overall. In the second round, he's a good player. Even mid to late first first round, he's decent. However, he was strapped with the expectations of a first overall pick, and he ultimately failed to live up to them. That's why he's labeled a bust.
No mention of the Cup clinching goal for Chris Phillips in 2007? All joking aside, I can’t imagine how sick that must feel. At least they didn’t lose by one goal.
I heard that the real truth Lindros refused to sign with Quebec, was because at the time, the owner had made advances towards Eric's mother. He took the heat and pissed off a lot of people, but in reality, it was for a just reason. He made up excuses for why he didn't want to sign to protect his mother.
I watched a video recently with lindros stating it was personal to the owner and not against anyone else. I always wondered what happened but guesses it was some.form of perversion..

Did you watch the NHL then or do you go by stats ? On the ICE everybody will tell you : BERTUZZI > Arnott >> Koivu. Sadly. But Koivu in potential was amazing. Like Kariya.

Red Wings through and through from 1993 to now they are my heart and soul. I lived the stanley cups. Lecavalier trumps Pavel Datsyuk. He had his fall ... but health was also a problem at times. He had Martin St-Louis? Datsyuk had Lidstrom and his great teamates alongside him... don't let stats tell a story that the game tells differently. Datsyuk is amazing but a lil tad behind Vincent. My pet peeve point = Lecavalier broke the 100 points mark.
@@WithScienceAsMySheperd -Vincent Lecavalier was the big shot in the early years, but in the very long run Pavel Datsyuk would prove he was overall a more gifted tallent and a fine leader as well on the ice.
He had a deep skill set for both offensive and defensive gameplay and always worked hard. Or how he was very loyal to his native Russia in international competition and thanks to that have won the prestigue Triple Gold Club achivement with;
- 2 NHL Stanley Cups,
- a IIHF World Championship gold medal + 1 silver & 2 bronze medals,
- Olympic gold medal.
- 1 KHL Gagarin Cup
- Including having competed in 7 WC tournaments, 5 OG tournaments & 2 World Cup tournaments + 14 NHL seasons, 6 KHL seasons & 4 RSL seasons = 24 years + of professional hockey.
And his awards list is most impressive:
- 4x Lady Byng Memorial Trophy - 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009.

Datsyuk was literally a gem among rocks when discovered and due to how he was often disregarded by higher-ups, it pushed him to become better and more determed.
In short term Cavalier was better, but in the long run and much more overall Datsyuk was just much deeper and a much better player to build a team with.

It's too bad Berard never played for the Senators. He might have helped them make the playoffs a lot sooner than they did. It's also too bad that Phillips never became the Senators captain or Norris trophy winner. He would have made a great team captain.

rather : amazing how many NOT #1 become legends. JAROMIR JAGR (#5)!!!! Dominik Hasek (199) ! Brian Rafalski! (undrafted) (free agent at 25 yo I think... he could ALMOST not compete for the calder If I'm not wrong cuz there was the Sergei Makarov rule - no player above age 26 could be counted as a calder candidate after the 30-some Makarov won the Calder.)
Stefan played a season in the Sm-Liiga in 04-05 with over a point per game. Not sure why that wasn't mentioned, especially as that was the sole team that he played for that season.
At his best, Eric Lindros had something I've only seen from Gretzky and Lemieux (I feel like Orr was the same, but I'm too young to have seen him): the ability to score seemingly at will. If he wanted the puck in the net, it was there.
His concussions and post-concussion syndrome related injuries stole what could easily have been a top-5 NHL career. And he STILL was a great player. But man... what he could have been.
Alexander Daigle is the epitome of "the gap"...what is the "gap" you say? The "gap" is the difference between leagues...it is incremental but at least differential in the lower leagues...the pros, theres no limit, and the highest guy at the time drags the bell curve further out as others chase them...its also a regular "job" vs weekly gig....Daigle never acclimated and barely split "the gap"...he was amazing in the low leagues, but never learned the long jump to reach what the pros really are.
Theres a saying, " amateurs practice until they get it, professionals practice until they dont miss"....this was the sad story of 1st pick Daigle over future hall of famers drafted below him

Chris Niel ? Retired number ? Who was this again? A 1990s NHL player ? I was brathing hockey from 1995 to 2002 and don'T really remember him as "retiring his number" type. Will be happy to learn!!! (hockey hobby-historian here)

He played just over 1,000 games with Ottawa from the 2001-2002 season to the 2016-2017. He played, mostly, on Ottawa's 3rd line. He was named alternate captain in 2013-2014... however, he's best known for being an enforcer. In his 1,026 games he only managed to record 2,522 PIM... :D
His number was retired for a combination of 2 reasons...
1. He was a crowd favourite. (Must please the fans)
2. His leadership, and dedication to the team and to hockey in general. They wanted him to be officially recognized for his part, despite never going to be even considered to be a HOF player.

The greatest enforcer in NHL history is Laraque. Above Probert, above Chris Nilan and all others.

Man, Alexander Daigle..... what coulda been for Ottawa. Think about the fact that once they got Alfredsson, who was an afterthought late late draft pick in 94, Ottawa made the playoffs 12 YEARS IN A ROW.... and 14 of 16 total with Alfie after his Calder season. 12 in a row, if only they'd somehow known what they coulda had with some of the other highly drafted players. They're 1 of those franchises that it's really sad they haven't won a cup, a lot of bad luck honestly.
And with Berard, I believe Redden was more what they needed. Look at his career plus minus, he lead the league one year even! Sadly Berard's career wasn't long for the world. Redden retired really young too honestly, but he gave Ottawa over a decade of 1st line defenseman play and they made the playoffs EVERY SINGLE YEAR they had Wade.

you should have mentioned that Patrik Stefan was drafted first because Vancouver made deals to get the Sedin brothers in picks 2 and 3. Patrik would have actually gone third pick.

Daigle was one of the biggest NHL busts EVER! Career high 51 points tor an #1 overall pick is embarrassing(never knew he scored 51 pointss 3 times!
He also scored a total of 129 goals in the nhl and over 300 points. It would be interesting to see the totals of other no 1 picks
