I recently learned that around 1:42, if you listen closely you can hear "Suspect may have a radio" over the radio Bourne took, and the soldiers resorted into checking the rooms one by one, giving Bourne even more time to escape. Great detail.
No other option now ages even LE liek to encrypt radios good luck with those scanners depends tho
Bourne also drops his radio next scene as they might have switched channel lines too.
Another detail: When he took the radio, he flipped the guy down the steps off instinct, then paused like "wait, I need a radio", then doubled back to get it. It made him really seem like a guy who was winging it instead of a scripted action hero.
they would of checked every room regardless? how else are they gonna find someone in the embassy. "suspect may have a radio" was a warning and instruction to the men to switch to a second channel. Its hard to hear but if you listen to what he says after that line he informs them to switch to another channel.
But Bourne broke the most important rule in the Bro Code by punching the guy in the nuts.
The Marines in this scene were actual Marine Security Guards that were stationed at US embassies around Europe. They took leave to be in the film and were put up in a 5-star hotel thanks to film company.
But at least one carried a carbine without sights.
Then they should have complained about having incorrect weapons. The AR's were ban guns, with no flash hiders , something the military Never had, and the guy rounding the corner on the staircase had a weapon with NO sights at all......
Well they weren't very good as they let him in and didn't find him !

You would think they would wear the proper MSG uniforms then. None of them had the correct uniform of the day on.
People don't really realize, since they are so common nowadays, that this was the first spy thriller of it's kind. A next-gen type of thing. Until this, they were all way over the top. Futuristic gadgets, and a bad guy who everyone knew about but couldn't be caught, and probably had his own private island. Then came this movie, with the much more realistic fight sequences and car chases and an enemy that was much more complicated. People also don't realize that Bourne from the books was a real villain before he lost his memory. A guy who served himself over his country. They'll reboot these movies at some point and possibly go back to the source material for it.
Wasn’t he meant to be the “bait ‘n switch” for Carlos the Jackel? Everything he did was to appear to be the equivalently dangerous villain, but actually wasn’t?
This had the feel of films like Day of the Jackal and The French Connection to name a few. Much more interesting than the futuristic gadget style of film as you say.
And then Bond became more like Bourne

Not true Jackie Chan movies did fight scenes like this, Hollywood adapted it from Asian fighting movies.

I would say they are both good. However, the Casino royale embassy scene is much better.
I'd agree with that for any pre-Craig film, but Casino Royale was defintely on par with Bourne for action sequences. Especially that staircase fight.

I like how calm Bourne is when usually deals with these types of intense scenarios.

It's a reflection of his training. Military in high-stress situations are taught to stay calm, don't panic or act in haste, because that's when you make mistakes.
The paranoia and fear coursing thoughout The Bourne Identity made it the best film in the series.

Kinda like The Winter soldier
The camera work on this film was way better than the sequels.
As great as this scene is, and it is absolutely genius... I dearly love the accompanying soundtrack. It has such a very unique vibe and blend that heart pumping, epic and exotics all at the same time - if that makes sense ☺️
I wonder if Damon scammed the Marines with his crypto ponzi scheme?
It's fairly reminiscent of Splinter Cell's soundtrack as well :)

It was very polite of him to put the fire extinguisher back on the hook when he was done with it.
If the extinguisher was not on the hook, it would have been a clue that he was there
I was a Marine Security Guard, always loved this scene even tho they got their asses handed to them.
As awesome as you guys are, there would a huge difference between the Marine guards and a highly trained assassin... especially one who is a bit confused and really on edge.
On the scene they were cautious and through on their search for the(possibly armed) suspect, the guy trying to escape had more time to do it. The scene made sense.
They were looking for an armed intruder , possibly mass shooter and terrorist so they have to be extra cautious and not put too much pressure on the guy who went loose, they weren’t sure if he was alone or part of the group that infiltrated the embassy
My friend Neil is Damon’s stunt double for this scene when Bourne is hanging on and climbing down the ledges of the building to the floor

Ever since this scene I started using fire escape signs to find whatever room I'm looking for in unknown buildings. lol.
Lol. I do commercial HVAC and it’s the first thing I look at going to a new building to find mechanical and electrical rooms.
I, too, too then off the walls and bring them with me for reference. Works a treat.
Probably the most believable fight scenes I've ever seen in a movie are all in The Bourne Identity.

You guys are living in a fantasy, if you just slap a smart man, he would fall out on the floor knocked out cold, then everybody would be looking at you, now you got the police to worry about, cameras, the man on the floor doesn't have to work again because hes gonna live off YOUR money, get the picture? Somebody gets the upper hand on three Marines and two service agents and got the glock in his hand, I'm knocked out even if he didnt hit me! It's how you stay alive, let him go! We can get him later. Your wife and kids need you alive. It's just an embassy not an ICBM silo, Kapeeesh?
I like that he thinks to hang the fire extinguisher back on the wall.
The only real noticeable screw up in this scene is when Bourne is on the fire escape he knocks all the snow off but when they open the door and he clings to the ledge magically the snow is back lol still love the movie though
That and the fact that the floorplan he takes is for like the second floor, what are the guarantees that the room layout is exactly the same on every floor? It's not an Hotel?
Yep, the magic reappearance of the snow was a pretty big blunder. Fortunately, it was a one off in the movie. And this still remains my favorite Bourne movie.

The snow on the ledge on the same level as empty, but at the level below the fire exit it was full
Yeah, I saw that when the movie came out. The reappearing snow! I guess there was no way to hide his footprints but to have the fire escape swept clean.
I love it how in the car chase with Marie, Jason can look at a complicated city map in just a few seconds and know the whole layout. But here he has to keep looking at a simple exit sign to find his way around. Lol But I still love the movie!
I think he was looking for emergency exit because normal exit was full with cops. He was finding his way around to look for the hidden (fire) exit 🙂
@@MrRiz75 I totally get what you're saying. But what my point is, just a little while later in the movie he looks at a map of the whole city for less than a minute and knows the entire layout. It's a hilarious flub by the production crew. Haha
Not only that but he takes the layout for the 2nd floor up to the 5th floor and just assumes it will be the same.
@@ATLienForLife He has been in the city before, so probably have studied it all too well and only need to look at it for all the memories to come back? Can't say the same about embassy.
I think at this point, not everything in his brain is turned on yet. Like when he threw that guy down the stairs, then ran back down to get his radio lol

I love how Bourne dumps all the snow off the platform when it comes loose and climbs beneath it, but then when the marines come out, it magically re-appears!!!

I love how the staff immediately make their way to their offices and close the door only to have the guards kick them in pointing guns
Proper methodical clearing, it was to guarantee their safety and the troops would have had stronger trigger discipline within the rooms - if they saw someone in the halls, all bets are off
It's for safety, not privacy - assailant could have been in any one
They have to make sure that everyone who's supposed to be there is in a controlled space, for their safety and the efficient operation of the guards.

The Bourne Identity was just GENIUS!

It's hilarous how many of those guards rifles were missing sights.
Someone messed up in editing the film. When Bourne goes out on that little platform and goes to get on the roof, it pulls away from the wall and knocks all the snow off. Then when the military come out a few moments later to look for him, all the snow is back on the platform deck. Oops!
Plus, when the pack slides off his arm, he manages to get a perm, then back to his regular haircut.

I don't know how many times I watched the Bourne series. I really love the movie so much. I even love Jeremy Renner's Legacy too. Wish they would make more spinoffs. (not sure if its possible to create another sequel of Matt Damons Bourne series in terms of the story.)

I always get a pit in my stomach when he looks down the ladder hole in the "fire escape."
I get nervous every time I watch him scale down the wall. I am afraid Matt Damon is going to fall and get hurt lol. I studied martial arts years ago. Fight scenes in Bourne are the most realistic I have ever seen.

Continuity error: Bourne knocks all the snow off the balcony, but when the Marines show up the snow is back.
Also, the escape porch was broken when Bourne stood on it, but in the next shot, it was repaired. That was an obvious continuity error.
@@cbrocks36 plus, when they looked over the edge, they would have seen the red bag he dropped. Those three facts (were the first two included) would have prompted them to look more closely.

They made a Bourne game that had this level in it, fun as hell game with unique fighting sequences that i havent seen in any other game to date (played on 360 and i cant find the game anywhere these days)

Way too many Marines, spent 4 years stationed in Europe. Most Embassies had maybe 10-12 Marines total. 2-4 would be on duty at any time. Paris had 14 marines when I was there. 3 shifts/day 7 days a week. Buying the whole detachment around wasn't that expensive.

Notice how the landing Bourne was underneath didn't have snow on it when he dropped down, but when the marines opened the door and looked down, there was a couple of inches.

I had a weird dream about this scene,where i was one of the marines searching for jason bourne
In this dream,i remember i just entered in a corridor,then i saw him along with few other people
As i ordered him to stop,another person turned around and started shooting at me with a gun
I returned fire,but we ended up shooting each other,but the most weird thing i remember,is that while the shooter went down,i was still standing
Then,a female marine came to my aid,and started extracting bullets from my wounds with nothing but her fingers,to my total shock
It was one of the weirdest dreams i remember,and whenever i see this scene,it reminds me of that
Great fight scene, no doubt, but it always bothers me when details like the snow disappearing and reappearing on the metal balcony are missed in editing. I noticed it the first time I saw the movie and, of course, each time I've seen it since.
To even blow your mind a little more - open this video two times, one paused at 2:21 and one at 3:29.
Looks like the same pants and shoes (probably the camera operator's) - we are probably looking at one and the same shot used for two different people.
That's a more serious mistake in continuity than the snow - in my opinion.
They could have just left out the shot looking down, because that one shot brought 2 continuity errors with it (legs/shoes and snow) - but I assume the director wanted it to be there and was aware of that.
Love this movie and seen many times. Never noticed the continuity error re snow on metal platform, it’s there, then gone then back again when Marines look out the fire escape door

Love this movie! But for some reason this is the first time that I caught that both when Bourne and the Guard look down after opening the door to the fire escape, you're seeing the camera man's pants and shoes. Not the character's.
Probably the same shot. In the shot you see gray pants and black boots, which is what the Bourne character is wearing, but not what the Marine is wearing.

Yeah, but not out of a sense of responsibility. If the fire extinguisher had been on the floor, it would have been a red flag for his pursuers because they might guess he'd used it to break the lock on the door.

They must’ve either ran out of time or forgotten to get the “POV” for the Marine who checks the balcony for Bourne.

So they used “Bourne’s POV” instead to tie the scene together. Quick thinking on the editor filmmaker’s part. Pretty subtle. If it doesn’t hurt the awesomeness of the story, then go ahead and finish your film.
(Also yes, the snow appearance on the balcony is an inconsistency and a production mistake… but also subtle. Still a treasured movie to me).

Like james bond 007, jason bourne movies should also continue. They can replace matt damon but the movies should not stop
