  • He might have gone on to take seven titles, but the first of Michael Schumacher's F1 world championships was one of his hardest-fought. In the first of a four-part series, Damon Hill discusses the intense rivalry they formed in 1994 - and how he returned the favour in 1996.

      Well, as opposed to the British press and the British fans, deep inside Hill is aware that Adelaide '94 was mostly his own fault. Schumacher was clearly ahead going into the corner, so he was in the right taking the ideal line and Hill knew he should've stepped on the brake - particularly since Hill was convinced that Schumacher had damaged his suspension in the previous corner, meaning he could could have overtaken Schumacher anywhere, even on the next straight, if he was right about the suspension (but that we'll never know)

    Hill was so underrated, yes he had the best car for 3 of his 4 seasons in f1 and was totally outclassed by Schumacher in 94 and 95, but he came to f1 really really late, schumacher was best part of a decade younger than hill when they were racing for the first time in 92. Also hill won races in 93, 94, 95, 96 and a flukey one in 98 (nearly winning in 97 with an absolute shed). He won the championship in his 4th full season...dont think hakkinen, raikkonnen, button or even mansell achieved that. Plus he was forced into a team leader role when senna died and had to carry on as normal.
    He wasnt even remotely as gifted as Schumacher, hamilton, senna, alonso etc but he deserves that world championship.

    • @electronichome1153
      @electronichome1153 Před 5 lety +7

      Damon is a brilliant driver! He never had the chances of all these drivers that you mentioned and despite that he was a top notch since his first real F1 season in 1993, at age of 33(!). He defeated Schumacher that season and only his bad luck stopped him to the title - engine and other car problems took away from him 3 victories - at the end of this season he would be in front of Senna and probably few point ahead or below Prost. For me in 1994 Damon is the champion! If we apply the present rules of F1 Schumacher would be punished immediately for what he did to Damon back then. And in 1994 and 1995 Beneton was THE BEST CAR. Williams struggled a lot after the ban of their active suspension. If Senna knew it would be banned in 1994, he would never sign with Williams. Senna didn't manage it and died because of the car's problems, Hill did it. Absolutely the best driver in the world in Suzuka and Australia 1994. He put so much pressure on Schumacher and the German hit the wall and then torpedoed Hill in an absolutely forbidden and nasty way. I still do not believe they did not punish him then and did not give Hill's title.
      Damon is simply one of the best drivers and champions in F1 history!

    • @heliumtrophy
      @heliumtrophy Před 4 lety +8

      I would have been the first to underrate him as a child but that drive in Hungary with the Arrows to me confirmed he was world champion material. You're always sort of blinded by the "best car" argument when they're in the title winning car but to see what he did with that Arrows, that's legend-in-the-making material really.

    • @SuperTfury
      @SuperTfury Před 4 lety +7

      Was gutted when he was dropped by Williams for 97 season, I can see why they maybe thought that Frentzen would be a good bet for 97 and true Damon hadn't done himself justice at times in the 95 season (although the FW17 was also not as reliable as the B195) but ultimately Schumacher would have still won that championship anyway and was simply the best driver. For me it would have been fascinating to see how it would have panned out in 97 with Hill still at Williams up against Villeneuve again and Schumacher in a now competitive Ferrari, who knows it might have been down to the wire with the 3 of them rather than just 2!

    • @adampetten5349
      @adampetten5349 Před 4 lety +4

      In 1994 Schumacher had a much better car. The Williams was a deathtrap. Damon was not as good in 1995. But again, the 1995 Benetton must have been superior for a physically challenged Herbert(even though he had more innate talent than Coulthard) to be so close to DC in the championship. He moderately edged a Villeneuve who crushed a very talented Frentzen. If Hill had trained as early and hard as DC he would have been nearly as good as Senna. Berger said the same thing about starting to drive at 24...you don't get those years: that experience back.

    i love how he tells a story. racing agains schumi made him better driver too. really great piece of F1 history.
    funny thing is people who never raced say schumi cheated but hill and hakkinen never say that. they say they had fair battles on track and had to work hard to beat him.

      I agree with Schumacher on that. I think their was a golden age of F1 in the 80s and early 90s with the likes of Senna, Prost, Mansell and Piquet. In the late 90s and early 2000s I think their was a bit of a lean spell. I often wounded if Schumacher would have been quite so dominant had he had stronger opposition.

    I can never say I've been a fan of Michael, but I have unbelievable respect for the raw skill he had and just how amazing his drives were (of course I have to find recordings of old races) a shame really that some of his moments were questionable then.
    However, undeniably the greatest in the F1 HoF
    For now 😏

    Nothing but respect for Damon. He took over the leadership role after Ayrton passed away after Imola, that moment in time must have had such huge ramifications on his mind. Thrust into that leadership role on top of that, THEN taking the fight straight to Michael's door? Formula one drivers deserve respect just stepping into a f1 car and firing up the engine. To step into one, take over the leadership role with the memories of your father doing the exact same thing over 20 years before, and not just stepping up, but winning? Tell me what other drivers deserves that level of respect?
