Nux is so right, Marceline really uses her songs to be vulnerable! I’m just realizing this now but every. Time. She gets raw it’s through her songs
"Am I a joke, your knight, or your brother? What am I to you?" Honestly it was when this episode came out that it hit me that Finn legitimately only hangs out with people who are older than him, and that he really values in what light they see him, and is self-aware enough to recognize, at least from his perspective, how they each see him, with Marcy usually just messing with him, PB usually just acknowledging his heroism (and abusing it), and Jake just being the best bro he can be, and that honestly hit hard.
See, while it can be read that way, I actually read it a different way. I think all three are directed to PB.
What am I to you? Just a joke? A sexless younger brother? Or your knight ie someone you could respect and maybe love?
Which is why it is telling when Marceline sings the same lines with him, also to PB. What am I to you? Marceline already sang her truth, but PB never did.
@@willw6504 yeah this is how I saw it too, since this is after pb turned 13 who legitimately had feelings for finn but turned 18 again (emotionally atleast) then saw finn as a little brother again which makes their relationship super complicated in finn's eyes
@@willw6504 Honestly, I can respect this take. I never thought of it like that, but it does make sense. He was probably thinking about how he felt about her since he had just lost her hair, and he did lead off the song confessing what he lost to PB. Thanks for the perspective.

He's legit asking in the order they are left to right as how each would see him most, but at the same time the fact is also all 3 point to PB in the middle he can both sing his truth and disguise a bit of his feelings under that slight layer of irony.

and when this episode first aired, across the fandom the ship Bubbeline was set sail.
But unlike most kids cartoon ships....this one landed safely.
Fun fact about this episode:
In the scene where Jake claims that they have "all forgotten about the music," Shelby is seen outside of Jake's viola and quickly crawls back in.
When Adam Muto pitched the episode, he had misspoken, which is the reason why Finn says, "I'll get your kid back toy". The team thought it was funny and kept the flub for the actual episode.
Episode connections:
The Door Lord looks similar to Key-per from the episode "The Enchiridion!" Key-per wore a key strapped to his head while the Door Lord wore a door.
Jake's viola says "toots" on the back of it as seen in "Gut Grinder."
While Princess Bubblegum, Finn, and Jake are chasing the Door Lord in Marceline's house, the title card music for "Hitman" plays.
Finn has Princess Bubblegum's hair from the episode "To Cut a Woman's Hair."
Cultural references:
To create the music with BMO, Princess Bubblegum seems to employ the artistic hobby of circuit bending.
Princess Bubblegum uses the British English term for musical beats ("quavers") as opposed to the American English term ("eighth notes"), hence Marceline's confusion. It could also be to her simply not knowing Music Theory, since one does not necessarily need to know it in order to play (although it could make composing songs more difficult, depending on the person)
Likewise, Princess Bubblegum's mention of the "mixolydian mode", with modes themselves being a somewhat tricky part of Music Theory to learn, would be even more confusing.
Princess Bubblegum's outfit resembled CJ's outfit from Regular Show's Season 5 episode, "Real Date".
Finn's pose when the door opens is similar to a pose used by Freddie Mercury.
The mathematical formula Princess Bubblegum draws in the sand is called "Euler's identity".
The noodles Finn got out of his backpack were dry, uncooked instant ramen noodles.
Storyline analysis:
The oven, range hood, and cabinets in Marceline's house are now white instead of red, as they appeared in previous episodes. It might have been because Marceline drank the red from them.
Before Marceline realizes what she is saying at the end of the song "I'm Just Your Problem", she is singing about wanting to make up with Princess Bubblegum even though she shouldn't, but she quickly changes the lyrics. It seems that despite their rivalry, they both care for each other a lot, but they are unwilling to admit it. PB also had saved the concert t-shirt that Marceline gave her.
Production notes:
This episode was formerly titled "Door Jam."
It was a pun on the musical term "jam" and on "door jamb," the name for the vertical part of a door's frame. However, the title was changed because the Adventure Time writers prefer not to use puns in episode titles.
The title card was designed by Michelle Xin and painted by Martin Ansolabehere.
In the storyboards, Jake got his pants by asking (and yelling) at Marceline to let him borrow her pants from her home, and Marceline says she misses it when Jake was afraid of her.
In the early storyboard, Finn was using a microphone while beatboxing.
Errors:
At the end when Princess Bubblegum is seen running away, her shirt is magenta instead of black, her ponytail holder is pink instead of purple, and her dress was purple instead of pink.
Princess Bubblegum's clothes change color.
The instant noodle set and the instant noodle suddenly disappear.
Near the end of "My Best Friends in the World" when Marceline is floating past Jake, the top of her bass and part of her hand disappear behind the background.
When Finn is singing the line "Last night was the most fun I've ever had...", we see a shot of Marceline, Bubblegum, and BMO. In the next shot it shows Bubblegum without moving sitting down on a stump and a few moments later shows the same shot as the first but now with her sitting and the stump is included.
When Princess Bubblegum was walking away, she was not carrying BMO, but when Finn says "lost the piece of your hair" she is seen holding BMO, the same thing happened when Finn said "the truth" and she turned around she was not holding BMO, but when Finn continues to sing, she is holding BMO again.
When Marceline plugs the hotplate into BMO, the plug is two-pronged yet she puts it in what appears to be a single, round hole.
During "I'm Just Your Problem", when Marceline sings "I forget what landed me on your blacklist", the word "Song" is missing from the writing in the door's arch.

This is a top 5 AT episode. Imo at least, but I know the general consensus is that this is one of the highest rated ones.
Also the drip in this episode is fire, and that's not even mentioning the lore drops.

When marceline sang her emotions out, it made this video even more better ( that Marceline song was one of my favorites songs that Marceline sings, throughout the entire show).

It's nice to see when youtubers don't care about copyright claims, but you should try your best to avoid them. I've lost the ability to monetize due to having too many claimed videos (maybe around 10 at one time?) and even after removing and fixing them I've yet to be allowed ads again, and this has been going on with my channel since around 2019. I've even went as far as removing all my videos with other peoples copyrighted work in them, but still youtube refuses me for "reused content."
Love your content, Nux! Just wanted to share that, hopefully you won't be too relaxed with the claims, I'd hate to see youtube mess with another one of your channels.

I watched adventure time as it was coming out with my dad (more or less, in the beginning I think there were already some episodes out until we watcjed them together). I don't know what it was, but this episode always stuck out to me, specifically Finn's song. It's not like it was especially personal or anything (I find myself relating to him in it, but not to any extremely notable degree, some lyrics just hit home) but out of every adventure time song, I remember his the most vividly and lovingly :) (other than the intro and outro obv)
Rewatching this show via Nuxanor has been healing asf for me
