The new Nike ZoomX Zegama Trail is one of my favorite trail offerings from the brand. It's a combo of what's great about the Terra Kiger and the Wildhorse mixed with some of the famous Nike road flare for good measure. What are YOUR thoughts?

Zegama was my go-to trail shoe for the second half of the year and for my FKT attempt in October. Lacing settled in for me with no lockdown issues after a few runs, and then I was good the rest of summer. After some of the biggest trail workouts I’ve ever done, this shoe left me feeling fresher and recovering faster than any trail shoe I’ve ever worn.
Solid feedback!
The Zegamas are my new “one for all” shoes. Heck, I even wear ‘em to church. 🙌🏻😁
I love my Zegamas! I didn’t have the lockdown issues, but I have fairly low arches. I’ve had them about 7 months and they still feel great.
The outsole is the biggest roadblock to give these a try... Running on terrain were descents are almost always involving some type of slick rock stairs, in a quite humid environment year long, minimum grip is a must (had quite sketchy experience with the wild horse in the past...)
Now I’m super excited about this shoe. Signed up to do a test trail run in these with Nike, courtesy of my local running store on 12/11. I can’t wait to give them a try.
I just did the NZ Tarawera Ultra 50k in these, They are amazing! they feel like super grippy marshmallows Awesome grip, good pop, nice lockdown feel, they definitely help save your legs and gave me a lot of confidence on the downhill. I got 2 blisters at the 48K mark but i think that was from me not using the shoes enough before the race. and it was just cool to be one of the very few people out there not using Hoka or Asics
Love this shoe. It was the perfect choice and held up great in the Pikes Peak Marathon. Handle the terrain great. Stood up to the brutal rocks above tree line and never had to retie.
Big fan, ran 50k race up Pikes Peak in them. I found they had comfort of high stacked shoes like SG and Ultraglide but had better stability. Foot sits in midsole a little instead of on top of it. I had great confidence bombing downhills without worrying about ankle wobbles. SG's in mountains is like driving old Caddy where you have no feel for where your front foot is going. They are not light but I've yet to find shoe that feels light 20 miles into the mountains. The comfort level was easy sacrifice for a few ounces. Fit for me was great but most Nikes fit my foot well, low volume/widish forefront. Can't speak of wet grip running in CO. Bonus they look cool. Looking at you SG.
I wanted the shoe badly before it was released/subsequently reviewed. Everyone killed the thing, but to be fair we were expecting the invincible midsole in a trail shoe (which we still need). Great honest review, I would actually try these now thanks!
Just seen the new Zegama 2 - being released next May….
AND ITS GOT VIBRAM 👏 🎉
Can't wait for the Asics Trabuco Max 2 review!
Can we launch a class-action lawsuit by now so Nike will finally listen and make shoes that work in the rain?
So ridiculous for a pnw company to not figure out the rain.
Ranked 1 on my trail list for running and hiking. Ranked right in front of Vective Endurus in dry conditions. A gortex option would be nice. The grip is way better than other Nike options. A carbon plate would be nice
If Nike decided that grip was important for trail runners (?) this would be a phenomenal option for chewing up big miles, however it sucks badly in moist conditions, so I only use it when the trails are dry. It seems odd that I have a trail shoe in rotation that needs to know the weather conditions before using it. Peg trail gore-tex seems to have a better outsole compound, but I haven't put in enough miles to be sure. Thank you for another honest review!
Yeah I know Nike is capable of producing a better outsole compound, so surprising they haven’t by this point!
How does this shoe respond to faster running? I like my long run shoes to still be able to pick up the pace. Also, if you were going to choose one between the Zegama and Peg Trail 4, what would you choose (for everything trail: long runs, daily, and speed)?
Love mine!!
Would you snag this, or wait for the Ultrafly? Looking for a good long run/sub ultra trail race shoe. Thanks GR!
Just grabbed my Zegamas on a sale for $85 from Nike. Really pumped to try them out. I was running in Hole TectonX before these and I have to say the outsole on those just vanished in about 100 miles and I was disappointed for the $200 price point. Does the mafate speed 4 last longer?
Ginger, can you make short video about running socks, i see you prefer injinji.
Will this be good for snowy slush over tarmac, road running? Traction wise
the ankle collars turn into a funnel during foot movement. Same thing on the Skechers MaxTrail.
Seems like it will be a really sweet shoe for me, being in the southwest, I run almost always in dry conditions. And I have other shoes to run in the wet. Going to get a pair of these, some of there colors are on sale 40% off right now
The feel great on foot.
As always, it depends how many compromises you wanna make and where and when you run: if mostly runnable and easy, not in bad condtions you can cope with the subpar grip, if you run a mix of everything all year through like me, you most likely will make your compromise not in grip. Why should I buy the Zegama when I can buy the Mafate Speed 4, Speedgoat 5, Xodus Ultra etc. where grip is much better, especially with the Vibram sole of the Hokas ?
Cost can be a factor for some. Also comfort. I’d say these are more comfortable than the MS4 but grip is the shortcoming
@@TheGingerRunner costs won't work as I would need at least a second pair with wet grip...I'm with you on comfort (SG too narrow, MS4 a little bit firm)...that's what I meant about making compromises, it's very personal...I decided after the Salomon Pulsar Trail that I will never buy a shoe with grip issues again I really like this shoe in general but I cannot run my home trails since the wet season here in southern Germany started, I'm sliding all over...
Can you do a review of the Nike Invincible 3?
I love this shoe! The large stack height is great for long runs but it's still pretty firm & fast compared to the Hoka Mafates & Speedgoats. BUT I agree the rubber is not sticky at all. I live in the mountains and all our trails have had snow and ice on them since October. It's a very slippery shoe on wet and icy terrain. I give the shoe 8 out of 10 stars!
Firm compared to the Speedgoats? I can't confirm that.
How was the sizing? I have to order it and can’t easily try one on. Could anyone compare it to a brooks trail shoe? I’m a 10 in both cascadia and caldera.
Question: Can you run on concrede with trail shoes?
Is it good for raining weather?
Hands down one of the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. Only downside is the traction in wet condition, which for some may be a huge concern.
Yup, totally agreed
Just raced a 200-miler and the Zegama would have been a good option on moderate to buffed dry trail segments; sadly my pair was delayed so I used the Hoka Tecton X and the NNormal Tomir. The Zegama fits better than the Speedgoat 5. The Inov-8 G280 TrailFly is more versatile and probably a better choice for most ultras, but the Nike is still a fun ride.
Please expand on "fits better than SG5". Interested
@@str8up50 the Speedgoat, in its various iterations, doesn’t work for me. It has a weird torpedo shape that crunches my toes. While a high platform, the foam isn’t comfortable. By comparison the Tecton X is softer, more agile, and holds the feet more naturally. I only charged shoes at 125 miles into the race because my feet had swollen so much that I needed a full size up. The only shoe that big that I’d packed was the Tomir by NNormal. The Tomir is excellent all-around but a little firm for me so I used the Inov-8 Boomerang footbeds.
@@TrailrunnerTroy Thanks for the reply
@@chocolatechow7697 happy Thanksgiving!
@@TrailrunnerTroy Thanks, 've a good one!
Looks so much like a Pegasus Trail (3 in the front, 2 in the back...kind of a Peg Trail mullet).
Anyone else have a problem with the foot sliding forward, bumping toes, on a downhill with the Nike Terra Kiger 8s? (Sizing is correct.)
Pls, can somebody can tell me more about size, is it real size? I wear usually shoes 39, nike I had long time ago, so now I would like know about size before I order them.
Thanks a lot❤
Before I even watched the video I knew the outcome. It’s Nike. 😂😂 anyway at least you called out the dangerous outsole. The least I expect if a trail shoe is a competent outsole. I guess I’m just picky.
Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GORE-TEX or Zegama for cushioning and comfort?
I got 2. For cushioning and comfort, you should absolutely choose Zegama.
no idea how long these have been out but several sites have them for $119
Probably a specific color way to make way for new color ways. Common with Nikes.
Would love to try these, but I don't have a deathwish. At what point does Nike take traction seriously and partner with someone that's actually capable of producing a fix?
Seriously! They CAN do better, not sure why they haven’t!
Always a Nike fan boy 😆☕
I am currently running with the North Face Enduris 2, am looking for a new pair of shoes. Was going to buy the Mafate Speed 4, but now I am leaning to the Nike ZoomX Zegama.???
Just do it.
Cannot overstate how much better the MafateSp4 is over the Zegama. Outsole, protection, longevity, wrap/fit, etc.
Agree with others. It's absolutely silly how much better the Mafate Speed 4 is than the Zegama. It's honestly insulting to even compare the two for all the reasons everyone else has said.
Not for use in the Pacific Northwest. First use in wet surfaces... I was a deer on ice. Vibram please.
Hello, I’m new here. Can anyone recommend a trail shoe, it is very good and wet conditions. I’m not actually going to be using it on a trail, but rather, I am blind, and while I’m in pretty good shape, physically, I dread, slipping and falling on black ice, wet leaves, and I’m about to go train with a new guy dog. So I’m looking for some thing that has very good grip, and if it had good ankle stabilization, that would be a plus. I told a friend of mine that I’m looking for something that can grip and handle. Unexpected changes in terrain like a hiking boot, but is lightweight like a sneaker, and she recommended trail running shoes, and I looked at this exact one at her recommendation, but comments, hearsay it doesn’t handle well in wet conditions, so is there something else I should be looking at. I need to find some thing and have it here and broken in by the end of the month when I leave for The Seeing Eye. Thx 👟🥾👩🦯🦮
Super
I really, really, really wanna get the Zegama. I'm a big fan of the ZoomX midsole and it's 500-1,000 pesos cheaper than the Speedgoat 5. The outsole is a turnoff though especially with the wet and muddy Philippine climate we get most of the year. It's a shame because otherwise it seems to be an excellent shoe.
I am from southeast asia . My only experience with Nike trail shoes was the Wild Horse 6 and definitely the grip and outsole will struggle in wetter condition 👎🏼. Another shoe that has horrible grip is Altra lone peak 3.5. Probably the worst shoe i ever purchased for trail running .
You should really aim to get the speedgoat 5 which has the vibram outsole.
I want it. I will.have it hehe..
Zegama 2 has Vibram 😀
I could see these being an ideal ultra pick (as stated), but having used Nike's outsoles in wet UK conditions, they're straight up lethal and terrifying. I hear your frustrations that they're so close to nailing it. I can't ever see them outsourcing materials. So, DO BETTER NIKE!
Nike’s rubber is on the one hand so unbelievably frustrating for any wet trail. But its one salvation, at least for the Pegasus Trail, is the tread is ridiculously durable to wearing down if you use it as a half road/half trail shoe.
@@acg1189 I'll agree with you on the Pegasus Trail outsole. However, I did find that the Terra Kiger outsole wasn't particularly durable. Perhaps its the slightly deeper lugs, or I guess they may have tweaked the compound? Either way, it was kinda like the worst of both worlds. The only positive being that it had a little more bite.
I have road shoes with better grip than any Nike trail, which is frustrating as they could be very decent if they simply fixed that.
Yup, agreed!
Unfortunately, the outsole's grip is getting more and more important to me the older I get.
My wife has it, I want it 👟
Pls can you tell me about size, usually my size is 39, should I order half size up
Not sure being one of Nike's best trail shoes is much of a hurdle to leap. Isn't the whole point of a trail shoe that it grips?
For some, yes. But for others being able to go ultra long comfortably trumps wet traction. I WANT IT ALL haha!
@@TheGingerRunner If you just want to go long without traction wear a road shoe?
Am I the only one who likes the Pegasus Trail? It doesn't deserve a mention at all? :P
Twitter dying a death 😂
So another nice shoe from Nike with shitty outsole. I wonder how many models will they release until they learn. Trail shoe without grip is not much of a trail shoe is it?
Especially in long ultra that this shoe is made for you almost always experience some wet conditions on the route.
So basically other than on a fire road or gravel rail trail, these shoes are useless. But at least they look cool! (to some people, not me)
Grip, grip, grip...its impossible to understand why they can't make a descent outsole. A mystery. I love Nike trail shoes, but the grip is deadly dangerous
Nike is a marketing company that sells an image. They focus hard in increasing margins to drive share holder value which leads to cheaply built shoes. Theres better shoes from better companies that focus on engineering and design first, then market their products. Big difference from the image generating celebrity infused culture of Nike.
I would continue skipping nike trail shoes due to their questionable outsole capability
Thumbs up for the Twitter burn!
$159 for a boxy, over designed hippo with no grip? No thanks. Nike could for sure fix this issue. Guessing they don’t because they still sell enough shoes anyway that they’re not truly incentivized to try. More of a hubris thing than an R&D thing.
You have lockdown / relacing issues in lots of review and videos. Might be a you thing??
Of course it could be a me thing. But I’ll point it out because I experience it during a review cycle. I have very normal feet, sizing and volume needs. I’m also VERY nitpicky with problems that could affect a large number of runners.
Gotcha. I really like your reviews. Just something I’ve noticed / wondered about.
Over designed hippo 😂
Twitter comment caused me to tune out. This is supposed to be a shoe review
‘Twitter die’? I don’t think this platform is suitable to portray your opinion about that Ethan. Twitter is great but it got a big cancer and I am glad it is being cut out.
I disagree. I like Ethan's value for honesty, truth and accountability - in shoe reviews and social media.
