Japanese Traditional Food Whale Meat - Whale Meat Cutting Skill in Japan

  • Japanese whaling, in terms of active hunting of whales, is estimated by the Japan Whaling Association to have begun around the 12th century. However, Japanese whaling on an industrial scale began around the 1890s when Japan started to participate in the modern whaling industry, at that time an industry in which many countries participated. Japan resumed commercial whaling in July 2019, and since then whaling activities have been confined to its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.
    During the 20th century, Japan was heavily involved in commercial whaling. This continued until the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling went into effect in 1986. Japan continued to hunt whales using the scientific research provision in the agreement and Japanese whaling was conducted by the Institute of Cetacean Research

    The reason their meat is so black is because of ultra high myoglobin (similar to haemoglobin) which stories oxygen in their muscle tissue. Same stuff that makes our blood red, just much more of it. That's how whales in general (and this species in particular) are able to spend such a long time underwater without breathing.
    I am led to believe from various other comments it is Cuviers beaked whale. Not much known about them except they can stay underwater for literally 3 hours and dive miles down.
    Quite extraordinary.

      I don't think you realize but japan puts a ban on killing certain whales for like a couple of decades so they don't go extinct so they can still hunt it but also have the whale around, so in the end its just a cycle like how here in the US eat cows and breed them instead of killing them all at once.

      Вы немного отстали от жизни. В настоящее время (с 1986 года) промысел китов заперщён по всему миру. Китов разрешено добывать только аборигенным народам (чукчи, инуиты, алеуты, фаррерцы), которые всегда питались китовым мясом с целью пропитания и с запретом продажи. Некоторое количество китов (в нарушении этого запрета) добывают норвежцы и японцы. И сейчас нет видов китов, которые находятся в угрожаемой ситуации. После запрета их добычи, киты восстановили свою численность, ну кроме тех видов, которые были истреблены за последние 250 лет. До запрета в 86 году СССР имел самый многочисленный китобойный флот и, соответсвенно, несёт самую большую ответственность за истребление китов.

      Так пишите будто другое мясо чем-то отличается. Так устроен мир хрюшек, коров, курицу, лесную дичь мы точно также убиваем ради пропитания и иных ресурсов которые с них получаем. Раньше китобойный промысел был в куда больших объёмах (т.к. китовый жир активно использовали везде от топлива до парфюмерии), а сейчас это хотя бы как-то регулируется и ограничивается.

    • @alexandera3200
      @alexandera3200 Před 10 měsíci +29

      @@MARAT_AUPOV Вообще то Япония вышла из всех ограничений и убивает сколько пожелает.
      И не корректно сравнивать КРС И МРС который разводят, с природными циклами. Я условно на ферме могу 2000 коров сделать за год, а могу 1000 оставит, ограничивая популяцию.
      А с китами и другим диким мясом, такое невозможно, тем более отлов не контролируемый идет и варварский. Почитайте документы ООН на этот счет.
      Или традиция убийства дельфинов на фарерских островах, чисто традиция ради крови.
      Как по мне, если люди развлекаются убийствами животных вне пастбищ, то я их могу рассматривать как цель. И говорить, а что такого, мне львов например надо кормить.

      Your new math is off the mark. The population of whale increases every year. The main reason that whale population decrease was due to the industrial whale hunting for its blubbers. They don't do that anymore since we can refine crude oil into other industrial lubricants. This is the main reason that ended whale hunting because it became unprofitable overnight due to the cheap fossil oil. Japan only harvest a very small number of whales and the population of whales increase ever since, as long as we don't over harvest other fish resources.

      Tecnicaly fishing is not limited to fish, one can fish for other types of animals, like Seals or Whales/Dolphines, or shellfish, and still call it fishing, i think this is like mediveal when all marine animals where classed as "fish" on the paper according to the Catolic church rules in Europe until the early 1500, i don't know if it is still a thing during the fasting in Southern Europe or if it is only fish and shellfish today.

      I saw whale meat for sale in a grocery store when I was in Japan. I ended up trying some whale blubber at a restaurant while I was there. Not my cup of tea but if the Japanese like it and they manage this wisely, I have no problem with them continuing to hunt wales. Here in Wisconsin, we have to manage our whitetail deer population along with our black bear population. Some people don't like venison and/or bear meat - I enjoy both. That and I am a responsible hunter, leaving where I hunt the same or better than I got there.

    Okay this sounds controversial, but, eating a whale is the same equivalent of eating anything else. It's the same as eating some exotic meat. What's taboo to us, is tradition to them.
    The problem is is when we have too many whales being hunted.
    This is a smaller species of whale, its not like the humpbacks you usually think of when someone says "Whale Meat". This is more close to a porpoise, hence the lack of baleen, and the mouth not meant for scooping up mass amount of small prey, but more of one big object. That means this species probably isn't the rare ones we think of. This is rural Japan, you can tell by the vehicles and landscaping. Japan has a more strict approach on conservation of said species, if they where indeed endangered.
    Remember, at the end of the day, you eating cow, could be frowned upon in other parts of the world where cows are treated like we treat our whales; sacred.
    No I'm not saying farming whales is okay, but occassionally taking one, like you would if you were to hunt a deer, except this one is one for a whole huge community, because this is obviously feeding many, is fine.

    • @reinaldofilho7207
      @reinaldofilho7207 Před 5 měsíci +2

      I DON'T AGREE WITH YOU, BUT NOT IN A HATEFUL WAY. COMPARING WHALE HUNTING TO EATING BEEF IS NOT A SENSE COMPARISON. WHEN JAPAN OR OTHER COUNTRIES HUNT WHALES ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE AS THEY HAPPEN, THEY MAKE THESE BEINGS DISAPPEAR QUICKLY. AND IT IS NOT THE CASE OF SUSTAINING A SPECIFIC COMMUNITY, THEY HUN IN A COMMERCIAL AND INDISCRIMINATE MANNER. IN THE CASE OF BEEF MEAT, IT IS NOT LIKE THIS, THERE IS MANAGEMENT IN WHICH THERE IS NO EXSTATION OF THE SPECIES.

    The Smithsonian estimates that close to 3 million whales were caught in the 20th century (with the 1960s the apex of commercial whaling and Norway, its biggest harvester). The data is fuzzy on this, but it is generally believed that the US is one of, if not the single greatest consumer of all resultant whale products (in the form of whale oil). Today, the US is the greatest champion of whale conservation efforts.
