The fact these men aren't just hunting for sport & hunting with equipment that makes the job easily. But with their bare hands, experience, & knowledge. Just to feed their families. All that work for $30 worth is insane. They don't take what mother earth or nature gives them for granted.

I find it sad to see such a beautiful animal die like that, but I understand that people need to do what they can to feed themselves and their families. This was filmed and narrated really well and was extremely interesting to watch.
That’s what you call beautiful? The sharks don’t think of you when you end up in their mouth. Beautiful or not, they must eat.. so do these people. No one can judge them.
@@Royal_dj_ent I may have worded my original comment a bit wrong. I’m not judging these people at all. And I do find sharks beautiful in their own way.
I’m not saying I’d want to jump in the water with them, though. I’m fully aware the sharks would likely think I was at best a nuisance, and at worst, dinner. I’ll respect them from afar.
@@GoldenGod69 i mean… u cant ever blame the animal. We know what we are doing . The animal only does things out of instinct. The shark can only attack humans when we are in its home. @@GoldenGod69 It's not like the sharks are swimming on land to eat people, if you get killed by a shark you probably deserve it. I understand you're saying there's a cultural influence on your belief because of where you come from, but the fact of the matter is that humans kill nearly 100 million sharks per year while sharks kill less than 20 humans annually. There is no justifying that under any circumstances.

They don’t have refrigeration. As soon as you kill any animal it begins to bloat from gut bacteria. They have to keep it alive during transport to keep the meat from spoiling.

That's huge tiger shark, the amount of times and patience, the resources and equipment it requires, is impressive and look at the size of the boat it is so small to catch those big sharks, they have to catch a big shark like that without machine to help them, the boat is not so big compared to how huge the tiger shark is, compare to fishing boats in other countries. For those befuddled by the price mentioned “50,000 rupiah or around 30 us dollar”, please kindly note as mentioned in description, it was extracted from documentary “overseas legends - the shark fin” which was made around year 1996 (before asian financial crisis). At that time FX rate is around Rp 1,800/USD. So, considering the time lapse, financial crisis, inflation, etc at the time, that amount is not as low as we thought now (still u fair price for the fishermen though).
1 USD in 1996 is equal to 1.74 USD in 2021
so 30 USD in 1996 is equal to 52 USD today.
still underpriced I think.
Rp 50,000 in 1996 = Rp 387,841 in 2021 at Indonesia, so still pretty cheap. Well, mostly traditional fisherman doesnt know where to sell to get better price.

They are very brave people and that is very hard work. I admire them
To those confused why they only get $30 for such a struggle:
They sell the body MINUS the fins for $30. Shark's meat is very stinky, smells like ammonia. The price is so cheap because for most people, the meat is only palatable salted (preserved salted fish). The fins make the most of their catch, the body is only their "bonus". I'm an Indonesian and $30 is not much even at the year this documentary filmed.
Thanks for the info ,i was confused
You sound like someone who has no experience with sharks. Shark meat is some of the whitest, mildest tasting meat in the ocean. Atlantic sharpnose meat beats cod any day of the week.
@@corneliusbartholemew6725 Maybe the sharks we're talking about are just different, or maybe it's just different taste preferences. You can come here and try to popularize shark meat. I told facts, nothing more. The same goes for terasi (blacan), fermented fish paste (and whatever else included in the making). It's very popular here but disgusting to most westerners.
It is said that this documenter was made in 1996. USD 30 at that time was equal to 50K Indonesian Rupiah. Thats alot of money they earned in 1 just 1 day. For comparison, Indonesian goverment civil servant higest monthly salary at that time was 120K Indonesian Rupiah.
