  • In this video I rebuild my BMW N55 engine. You will see the entire process from the beginning to the end.
    The original engine from the car was completely destroyed inside and not rebuildable, so I had to source another N55 engine and continue my project that way. I then used parts from both engine and bought many, many new parts to build an engine in my garage and at the end you have the final result.
    What does it take to rebuild a BMW engine?
    This all started when I bought a BMW 335 with a blown engine. After taking it apart, I realized that it was not fixable, but luckily shortly after I found a $300 engine locally which was rebuildable. This is that process.

    Tools used: amzn.to/3SXwywS
    I can’t believe that it’s been almost 2 years since I rebuilt this BMW n55 engine. I made a 10 part series with many details and step by step instructions, so check that out if you are doing it yourself. This video is more about showing the entire process in only 29 minutes in case you want to rebuild a BMW engine yourself.

    It's great to discover/learn more about our engine architecture. (here for me, injector seal replacement and installation. Never seen this before in any video) )
    Why you didn't tackle some other weak points of the N55 during this rebuild ? Cost maybe ?
    I'm thinking about the water pump (more difficult to replace while the engine is installed in the car)
    And install a protective plate behind the harmonic pulley to prevent damages if the serpentine belt is escaping.
    Finally, what is your exhaust ? It's sounds no sweet to my hears. Love it.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před rokem +3

      I mainly did this to learn exactly how engines work and to challenge myself to see if could do it. The cost was definitely a factor as I ended up spending basically the same as it would cost to buy a used engine (although with 90k miles). The water pump was placed less than a year before I got this car, so figured there was no reason to spend $400. The protective plate; however, was something I wish I installed, but at the time I didn't know those existed :).
      The exhaust is COBB cat-back exhaust:

    Hi ! Thank you for this awesome content ! Really enjoyed watching this !
    Just wondering if I can get some more precision for mainly two moments :
    1) around minute 10 => How did you chose that gap clearance ? (I mean why not larger or tighter eventually)
    2) around 16'14" or some few moments you've used a torque wrench to tighten that long bolt then you kept tightening it with a circle paper with angle => is there any reason/recommandation for that extra tightening such I've seen that no extra strengh should be put on after the torque wrench click ?
    Sorry if those questions have already been asked but I didn't see them prior and for sure, thank you for the questions !
    Cheers !🙌

    • @ct1762
      @ct1762 Před 8 měsíci

      angle torquing is simply a more precise way of measuring ... so its not off. 70nm would be something like double that by doing 360. gap clearance is chosen by piston manufacturer. read manual for proper end gap... most brands are a little different than stock.

    Can you explain at beginning of the video. When you started to fit bearing so you had two sets of bearing
    Sounds like you check clearance than you took off bearing than installed different bearing again.
    Not sure if I made sense 👍🏻

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před rokem +1

      For both main and rod bearings I used my new bearings with the old bolts to measure the gap and make sure the clearance was within spec using plastigage. I have a video on plastigage if you want to learn more. Once everything checked out, I put some assembly lube and using new bolts torqued everything to spec. Using new bolts is vital as these are stretch to yield bolts and if you use old bolts, you won't get correct torque figures.
      Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

    What is the purpose of the clip and arm on the angle indicator? I checked your "tools used" link, but still didn't quite understand.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před 5 měsíci

      Most of the bolts on this engine are torque-to-yield, which means they stretch as torque is applied. To make sure the 'stretch' is exactly as it should be, BMW says to use a torque wrench and tighten it to, let's say, 90 lb ft of torque and THEN add additional 90 degrees of rotation. This is what that tool is for, it allows you to add addition rotation of torque to the bolt.

    • @KalebWR

      @@brewyawn3394not good. I turned the engine manually when checking the timing chain. Put valve cover back on, engine oil etc, started the engine, cranks but won't start.

    Hey partner is it possibly to do the timing chain guide with the motor in.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před rokem +1

      Hi! Yes, it's possible. Depending on the model of the car, you may need to drop the subframe (it's like 8 bolts) if you want to do the timing chain at the same time and you'll have to remove the radiator fan and a few things on top of the engine to remove the valve cover. I go into a little bit of detail in the video on the timing chain: czcams.com/video/-apNebfNCMA/video.html
      Thanks for watching.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  Před rokem

      I don't do this as a job, I just did it to see if I can rebuild an engine. The second engine I bought was $300 as it had a spun bearing which required a full rebuild because the crankshaft was damaged. It's not really worth it to pay someone to rebuild it as it's cheaper to buy a used engine.

    • @SimpleCarGuy

      That was all parts of the engine.. the rod bearing spun and seized on the crankshaft and then the rod broke and sent metal pieces flying throughout the engine.
