The Lake District - Camping In Nature's Backyard - Part Two

  • čas přidán 10. 09. 2021
  • The adventure continues as Country House Gent, having previously arrived at the nature reserve, now pitches his tent and settles down for a much needed "good night's kip".
Rising early the next morning and with hunger calling, CHG must first build a fire, involving much snapping, hauling and chopping, of the various items he needs.
Now having well and truly developed an appetite, it just remains to assemble the campfire, before cooking one of his favourite breakfasts - Smoked Manx Kippers, with crusty toast and butter.
Later and with his belly filled, he takes a moment to walk-off the hearty meal, admiring the scenery, wild flowers and picking blackberries.
We then leave CHG as he snoozes under a shady tree - probably dreaming about what he'll be cooking for dinner . . . next time . . .

    CHG Viewers,
I read/skimmed the comments and some are complimentary, encouraging, and supportive. I was stunned at the number of negative, critical, and sarcastic comments. One person even called himself the “turd in the punch bowl” because he was making a negative comment. Who gets pleasure from self-identifying that way? I don’t understand. How do some people feel free to discourage someone who put time and effort into making a new video for us to enjoy?
Kevin is not in competition with himself or anyone else. It’s not Aslan vs Nature Reserve or Nature Reserve vs other camping videos. CHG kindly gives his viewers a gift of his creativity, time, and humor. If you don’t like a video, be quiet and keep scrolling. If you like only one thing about a video then compliment that one thing.
For me, Travels by Narrowboat, Travels by Motorbike, and all other CHG productions are a few minutes of peace and pleasure that I eagerly look forward to. Lately, most all of the news contains negativity, criticism, and sarcasm. Let’s keep this channel a peaceful and positive place. Blessings 🌿

When I was in the Guides, we used to cut an H shape in the grass and roll back the turves and lay the fire on the soil. Then, when the fire was done and out we would roll the turves back in order to leave no (or very little) trace. Also, presumably, the ash would fertilise the grass from underneath. Safer to light a fire on soil rather than grass, however green it looks. Just a thought for next time you are laying a campfire. Enjoyed your little adventure. 👍

You are a man of great patience Kevin. Such a great effort foraging, building your fire and cooking your breakfast! That was a beautiful sunset you videod the night before too Kevin. And I recognised the wildflowers - they are some of a great many wildflowers that flowered profusely in the waste ground next door this summer. It was a good year for wildflowers. And I was quite envious of you picking blackberries (or do you call them brambles?) I fondly remember having a day out with my family to pick blackberries, eat a picnic lunch and swim in the river. Thanks Sarah and yes, well spotted. The videos are also a little dig at all these celebrity explorer types - as well as being lovely to watch, of course. 😊

My Cub Scout age son was watching this with me and said ," Awesome, a British guy that can actually sleep in their tent and not slink off to hotels in the middle of the night, and hes not even a Special forces guy or a Eagle Scout"...Thought I was gonna die.

The classic way to cook British kippers, which are a traditional breakfast meal, is to pour boiling water over them and just leave to soak in the hot water for 5 minutes. These days they're usually sold in a heatproof boil-in-the-bag form, so you could actually boil them in the same water that you'll use to brew your tea or coffee. Dropping the sealed bag into boiling water is much easier than having to carry a grill rack and all that paraphernalia, and there's no cleaning up needed.
Manx Kippers are indeed the very best. Totally delicious, but full of very tiny edible bones, which is why they're eaten with crusty bread.
Good breakfast call. Now I'm hungry.

Jugged Kippers?? I watched The Two-Fat Ladies show when it was on and I think they made them. I would akso like to try Kedgeree (?). That sounds good too.🙂

      @rickbear7249 Před 2 lety

@@galas1926 yes, just bring the water to the boil. Remove from heat. Put the kippers into the just-off-the-boil hot water. Wait 5 minutes. Eat and enjoy. Typically with a knob of butter. They're called "jugged" because they're traditionally cooked by standing then upright in a tall jug with boiling water poured over them.
BTW, if the very tiny (edible) bones put you off, then forking the fish off towards the tail should strip the flesh from the bones. But always eat with fresh crusty bread for the best experience.
Kedgeree can be made from kippers instead of the more traditional smoked haddock. If you're camping I'd buy a pre-cooked camping rice (available online) and just mix in some butter and the kippers. Always tastes good if eaten in the great outdoors.

I had jugged kippers once but the ointment the doctor gave me cleared them up in no time.
