Isn't the Jari 2.5 steel? Looks like steel, including the fork.
I agree, the Kellys frame is very handsome! 😍
And the Merida Silex (which I'd been considering since last year for commuting). If only it had a Koga BeachRacer -level smooth welds and a threaded bottom bracket!
And so is the colour (beautiful emerald green!) of the aluminium Vitus gravel bike.

Yes, it is Reynolds 520 chromoly frame and fork. Sorry for the mistake!

@@e-sickbiker14 No problem, mate. To err is human. I have no doubt you can as easily distinguish between aluminium and steel welds as I do. Must have been stress / lack of time.

I ride the Marin Gestalt on this list. Mine has the carbon fork, thru axles and Sora 9 speed for $900. It's unique in that it has a very road bike 41.5mm rear center but still fits 650b x 48mm tires with room to spare. The secret sauce is the ability to lower tire pressure to match terrain. 50psi is fast and responsive on the road and as low as 35 for truly rough trails.

That GT Grade version comes with WTB Riddler Comp, 700 x 37c tyres. Vitus Energie had full hydraulic brakes, which is neat at this pricepoint. However, the bike has been sold out for awhile, and will probably not come back again.

  • @omera967

Actually they are decent amount of choices for budget gravel bike (I have been researching for quite awhile because it is what I wanted, a budget gravel bike). The Poseidon X, Raleigh Willard 1, Marin Nicasio 1, Marin Nicasio+, Marin Lombard 1, Breezer Doppler Pro, Breezer Radar Expert, Reid Granite 1, Genesis CDA, Salsa Journeyman, Cannondale Topstone. I went with the Fuji Jari 2.3 in the end because it was on sale on CRC & wanted a steel bike. Also having an adventure 2x setup out of the box is great. The Jari is seriously underrated though.

@MrBeardFaceMan It's been great for me. The stock wheels & tyres were great. Pretty fast. But I have swapped out to 650b wheels. Then got hit it by a car. Went to a LBS to repair the bent chainstay. Still going strong. A weighty bike though. But I'm not complaining.

The Jari 2.3 (same frame as 2.5) is steel Reynolds 520. It rides fantastic. I have one and it can do anything. The crank set is no brand but it is 44 28 and works perfectly. The clearance and additional amounts have been very well though out. Highly recommended as just so fast comfortable and capable.

It's the best bike that you can get under 1000 USD. I really don't understand why it's not in the list. The only real problem I see is the tire clearance - they claim 36c as the max one and I guess you can fit up to 38c without compromising clearance for riding in the mud. I ride quite harsh gravel/MTB tracks and 40C with good thread pattern works really well, I would say 38c is ok as well.

The Jari 2.5 has Reynolds 520 chromoly tubing, not aluminium. Love that frame, if not the color (the green frame that comes with the Jari 2.3 is better, would be better yet in silver). I’d be interested in getting one if I could buy the frameset separately, and fit it with slightly higher grade components.

I would say, the best ca. $1.000,- bike right now is the:
    - …Vitus Zenium Disc (www.chainreactioncycles.com/de/de/vitus-zenium-disc-rennrad-tiagra-2019/rp-prod172936). It is a very handsome carbon bike with a mechanical Tiagra groupset with Spire disc brakes. The best value I have come across to date. Sure, the groupset is beginner-level, but everything else is just as good as any carbon bike. For comparison, a Tiagra-equipped model of a Salsa WarBird 2019 model is 2.5 times more expensive! The frame alone is over 2x as expensive as the entire Vitus Zenium Disc. You can upgrade the groupset for €300-500 - and end up with a beautiful top-notch bike for under €1500! Correction: appears to be a road bike, rather than adventure / gravel. Meaning, does not appear to support tyres wider than 30mm.
    - Raliegh Clubman Carbon: a lovely carbon bike that costs a mere $1.200, but is unavailable in Europe: www.raleighusa.com/clubman-carbon
    - The On-One Holdsworth Mystique & Space Chicken are both very handsome, too, and are also a good value, though not a match in value to the Vitus. They are about twice as expensive, but also come with significantly better groupsets. The full setup (with Sram Force!) costs ca. €1850! With Sram Rival - ca. €1.550! www.planetx.co.uk/c/q/bikes/gravel-adventure-bikes
    - 2018 Genesis Datum frameset for ca. €800. Can be set up with parts you like. A beautiful bike!
Of aluminium and steel bikes, My favourites are:
    - Cannondale TopStone (the Sora model is ca. €1.000,-)
    - Evans Cycles' Pinnacle Arkose (ca. €900 -1600): www.evanscycles.com/en-de/search/pinnacle_arkose-model_family?text=arkose
    - Cube NuRoad series, as you mentioned
    - Norco Search XR Steel (ca. €1300,-). Lovely geometry, respectable setup: www.evanscycles.com/en-de/norco-search-xr-stl-apex-2019-adventure-road-bike-EV337770
    - Canyon Commuter 7 / 8 & Urban 8 (NOT gravel, but lovely bikes nevertheless - with integrated stems, carbon belt drives, etc.! N.B.: They cost past your specified budget)
    - I'd like to say, the Focus Paralane, but its 110kg load limit is a joke!
    - some Boardman models
    …and more…
