He’s definitely not forgotten by me. I was SO into the NBA from about 1987 to 1998, playing on all my teams and practicing constantly. But I never had much natural talent. Even at 6’1”, I was never able to dunk, and honestly could barely even touch the rim. So seeing Spud do it with relative ease? Crap, that blew my mind! Sometimes the talent certain people possess just astounds me.

"Give me the ball, I'm gunna dunk on this little B**"
Every time I would steal or intercept.
Eventually LET him think he was clear to dunk on me.. then last second jumped up and rejected him so hard..that at his own school the whole crowd started laughing...even his own team !!

Back when the ACC was king, I was growing up in North Carolina. I saw SO many incredible players go though the elite basketball schools in the ACC but few had left the mark that Spud did at NC State. He was 'must see TV' before there was even such a thing.

I remember watching Spud when he played in college and we would always go wild when he would dunk! The main reason he won the NBA dunk contest was because he was so short that when he jumped it looked like he was flying (his feet were like 5 feet off the ground! The judges were freaking out when they saw this. Martina Navratilova was a judge and she mentioned this in an interview after the contest.

I remember that dunk he made as if it was yesterday. I have told many people about it that have never seen it. I still think that might be one of the greatest dunks ever made. Bouncing the ball on the floor having it land on the iron and bounce back and catching it and dunking it. It was a thrill just of see it again. Thanks for the post.

Spud Webb was not only short he was small 133lbs. That's totally different that a lot of other short players. Nate robinson for example was 180lbs, big hands, big feet, long arms. Spud was literally the size of a child.

Man I was at that game in Atlanta when Spud dunked on the whole Laker squad! People stood and you couldn't hear in there for 5min!!That was Kareems last game in Atl. They had a ceremony b4 the game to recognize him. That was a cool ass memory. Thanks for the nostalgia!

Being from Maryland I got to see a lot of ACC games with Spud and Mugsy. We knew Spud could dunk in college and it was exciting watching the little guys play well. I didn't know they would have such an impact in the NBA. When Spud was in the dunk competition I remembered being happy for him but when he started pulling out these clutch dunks you knew you were witnessing a magical moment. For a guy that size his timing had to be impeccable in order to pull of some of those dunks with no margin for error.

I first saw him when he was playing with the Rhode Island Gulls, and Manute Bol was his teammate. I went to a game to see Manute, and I thought it was so nice that before the game they were letting the ball boy shoot some hoops with the real players. Them Spud started dunking during the warm-ups, and my jaw hit the floor.

Thanks to my father who followed all things sports I heard about the remarkable Spud Webb winning the slam dunk contest in the 80’s. For some reason though I though he was some historical figure having achieved his greatness in the 50s or 60’s. Now I know it was 1986.
    Thanks for the video.
