    The best thing about this rivalry was the camaraderie between the two. Hakkinen never failed to congratulate Schumi if he did well. He was not a salty person whatsoever. The rivalry also brought out the absolute best from both drivers.

      Really? Just because they aren't fighting, doesn't mean great relationship. They are so cold towards each other during paddock. And Hamilton asking, if Vettel crashed him purposely THIS YEAR, isn't really a sign of friendship.

  • @gmwdim
    @gmwdim Před 5 lety +72

    I remember this race, it was the first season I followed closely. Schumacher overtook so many cars early on, but had a tough time getting past Damon Hill who defended stubbornly. I think Hill’s team told him to let him through but he refused, which isn’t surprising considering their history. Schumacher destroyed his tires trying to overtake Hill. Probably didn’t matter in any case since Hakkinen was way ahead anyways but it was a shitty end to an intense season.

      Actually he couldnt overtake hill. He only took the position when damon went into his scheduled pitstop. It was a nice fight as damon was also trying to overtake villeneuve. 3 world champions within a sec for some laps.... it was nice.

When me and my friends went to Hockenheim , many of the drivers walked out of the paddock , all the way to the fences and actually talked to the fans for almost 20 minutes after the very first practice. It was really cool to see/hear them talk and joke with everybody like any other guys. It brought them to a human level and my respect for all of them grew as race drivers.

    Until this title Hakkinen suffered to reach him. He caught up with a troubled McLaren after 1993, suffered a serious accident in Adelaide in 1995. He saw his teammate win before in 1996. Hakkinen's first victory came only in 1997 and finally in 1998 the title.

    I was surprised a bit at the time, because MSC stalled the car. If they had told Eddie to "accidentally" stall his car too, then MSC could have taken back pole, as were the rules at that time.
    Im surprised how Ferrari, the masters of the dark-ish arts didnt take this opportunity.
