Wooden Keepsake Boxes Made From Scraps

  • I made a batch of wooden boxes/keepsakes to sell on my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/listing/68881553....
I only used scraps I had around: a few boards of obeche, a lamination of birch slats I had made previously, and some thin strips of mahogany. The bottoms are poplar plywood. The initial milling was a bit of a chore, but the resulting material was good and I got five boxes out of it.
I decided to only use the table saw for the entire process (well, except planing and sanding), because I wanted to put my new Bosch GTS 10 J to the test (result: very accurate and quick). Some of the cuts I show in this video aren't particularly safe, but I was very aware of what I was doing and where my hands were. Remember: YOU are responsible for YOUR OWN safety.

This should be required viewing to all beginners. It confirms that one doesn't need a $5,000.00 table saw to produce beautiful work. Very nicely done. Great design.

He just proved for all the woodworkers out there you DONT need a chop saw to get beautiful mitre corners..

I really love how you did that with just the table saw. It took me a minute to follow what you were doing with the angles to turn the grain on the lid. I really like the contrast. The side accent is a sharp idea as well. There are fancier videos out but simple is best for beginners like me. Too many are over my head, skill wise, and too perfect for me to do now. This video encourages me to keep up, imperfections and all and I can do it with the most basic of tools if I spend the time to be as familiar with them as you are here. Maybe add some voice over or a word box to explain some of the steps you took as you went. Again, loved the video and I saved it for future referrals and will subscribe to follow your progress.

Liked what you did. I’m getting ready to make a couple for graduation presents but not sure how to start. I’ve watched a lot of videos. I really want them to be big enough to hold all the papers they get when graduating. So, 12x9 at the base inside. But your design is good and much easier than a dovetail. I’ll wait until I get better with the router for that one.

Nice to have a good video for making a simple box. Question: was the top actually glued vertical layers of a spalted wood, or such?
