This was great. I currently have a M1 MacBook Air and my "Gaming" PC is a 2015 Lenovo ThinkCentre M93P Small Form factor with a 1050ti in it and 24 GB of RAM. I'm looking to consolidate and looking to get a refurbished HP EliteBook 830 or 840 G7 or G8 and replacing both machines with this laptop and an EGPU. Seeing this video, I think my plan will work just fine and likely give me a better gaming experience than I am used to at this point. THANKS!
Edit: found a great deal on an EliteBook 830 G7 for under $400 so I'm well on my way!

Loved the video and it hits the valid points on why you'd want an egpu. For myself, I always wanted ultimate portability in a light thin laptop with great battery life. I don't like thick chunky gamer laptops with RGB lights and bad battery life. This gives me the best of both worlds. With how cheap cards like the rx 6700 xt have gotten it makes it even more appealing than ever before.

I like your very first point you start this video off with. This is a conversation I'm always having. I don't care for a desktop I want that portability. When I need more gpu power I can hook up an egpu. Looking to add rx 7600 or 3060 12gb gpu, would have loved to try arc a770 16gb but with no rebar might have too many issues. It would be nice if someone could test out arc a770 in an egpu enclosure with no rebar. I would like to see if it's unplayable or somewhat playable. Thanks for the indepth video.

I've actually been toying with the idea of getting a Core X for my Blade Advanced 2070 Super, so I can move to a 30- series without having to buy a whole new laptop. I live in Japan so a Razer Core X here is about $300, and a 4060 is about $320, so $600 to make my system somewhat future-proof. Meanwhile the cheapest new Blade 15 I can find here is about $3100. My Blade has kindof become a desktop anyway since I got my Steam Deck, so adding a Core might be the exact right move.

Great take on this and I think you covered all the key points.
I use a Razor Core X, with an FE 3070 and an Asus Zenbook Flip (12500H cpu and 90Hz OLED). That portable laptop/tablet that I can then dock when home (mostly leave it at my parents as I have a full PC at home).
I have also tested it with several GPUs from a 1050 Ti up to an RTX 3080, and the 3070 seemed to be the sweet spot for me, though I am interested about 4000 series cards and frame generation.
From Intel 11th gen onwards you get Thunderbolt 4 which works a bit better than 3. Also at 12th gen you get much better CPUs that can keep up with desktop ones.
AMD laptops with USB 4 may also support Thunderbolt 3 now (USB 4 can and you need to check if the laptop implemented it)
For testing I find that you really need to use gaming benchmarks for eGPUs as the synthetic 3Dmark stuff focus mostly on the GPU and are not as affected by the Thunderbolt link.

Or a computer that could just some extra power but don't want to upgrade the whole computer. Like I kinda want one because I got a MacBook Pro and a iMac where it could really help boost the performance. However I also have a older gaming computer so I don't really need one. So long as it is hooked up to thunderbolt, (and another power supply) it should work. There’s also some additional information online for troubleshooting and doing the installation process and whatnot, so you can go ahead and take a look at those if you can.

'' You probably can't upgrade because gaming laptops have one major flaw that ruins them all (besides basically being useless when not plugged in): extreme heat.
You could cram as much as you want into it, but without a way to keep everything cool, you're going to end up throttled regardless. There's only so much you can do with a laptop due to that.
At best, you could try to undervolt as much as the computer will take and maybe use something like Throttlestop, but then you risk burning something up, either in the laptop or your lap itself. ''
