    I think this is the first external graphics enclosure I really, really like. Not only do you get triple card support, meaning that pretty much anything will work at this point, you also get full power delivery to your system. And the price being $300 is much more reasonable. That's about as much as an Akitio Node cost me when I factored in an additional power brick for my laptop. This is a lot higher quality than that too, of course.

    For those that don’t understand why people don’t just buy a Desktop;
    I am a Web Developer, sometimes I work in a coffee shop, sometimes I work at home. On rare occasions, I meet up with clients at their business, and I use my Mac to show off things.
    I can’t bring my desktop everywhere. I would love to have a eGPU Enclosure to throw my 1070TI in (which is in my desktop), so I can have that better performance for various tasks like Video Processing on the go.

    I just bought one of these and am planning on putting 2070 super inside to use with my razer blade stealth. The nice part about using an RTX card is that it has a usb -c port on the back so I could buy the cheaper one and still be able to have an extra port :D Now I'll have a portable gaming rig I can bring to the cottage and hook up VR with for some awesome drinking nights. Man I'm excited! Oh yeah Austin you can get 6 foot 40gbs thunderbolt 3 cables, there are a few companies on amazon that make them and you can also get one from razer as well. Only downside is they are stupid expensive, like 80-90 canadian pesos for one. So like 60 bucks american.

  • @sullychow4123
    @sullychow4123 Pƙed 6 lety +554

    Please stop reviewing fortnite and rocket league. They seem to be very common in your videos and they're both not demanding, Fortnite specifically was made to be able to run on a wide range of devices. Buying an external gpu enclosure and a high end graphics card is way too expensive and plain silly to test out on games like those. Throwing in more graphically intensive games would be much more helpful in observing the limits of these setups (yes I know it depends on the graphics card itself as well as the thunderbolt limits). I have a reasonably capable gaming pc so personally it's not for me but I don't see how someone could spend that much money on this just to play Fortnite, surely they'd wanna try games like Witcher 3, Shadow of war and the like if they're spending around ÂŁ800-1000 for an eGPU (300) and high end graphics card (500-700) but still want a laptop as their main driver. You should do brief mentions of FPS in those kind of games. As it stands, this video gives very little info for very expensive things (to the average consumer).

    • @unkieG
      @unkieG Pƙed 6 lety +37

      I guess because Fortnite is one of the biggest and fastest growing games in the world right now, casually and competitively. People everywhere are searching for "best laptop/pc setup for fortnite" and seeing what they can get. Those searches lead them to videos with titles and subjects like this one. That equates to more views. A couple years ago the same thing was happening with League of legends and its kind of where the whole "But can it run Crysis" meme came from. You would be surprised how many people almost solely play MOBAS and FPS arena type games and don't play anything else really. It's annoying and I see where you're coming from but its just business and what can generate the most views RIGHT NOW that is making creators do these kind of videos.

I haven't seen a single video or article displaying the compatibility. Apple uses a lot of render comparisons and certainly associates the compatibility with gaming... But what about content creation, Cinema 4D, Premiere, After Effects rendering, etc???
    I don't see anything online highlighting the performance of these enclosures with those mediums.

Since you arent gonna carry it anywhere you could just 3D print a mount for that PCB and GPU and keep the PSU anywhere. Keep it all connected to a monitor, keyboard, mouse.. and just connect the Thunderbolt cable when youre home :)

  • @stopthrm

    going off of my own experiences with this particular eGPU, I'd say that eGPUs the way that they are currently are for a specific person based on how you'd answer this question.
    a.) are you constantly on the go and do you always take your laptop with you?
    b.) are you a PC gamer ?
    d.) do you like to take your video games on the road with you?
    c.) do you need a professional graphics card for CAD, Rendering, Video Editing, etc without having to own thousands of dollars in other computers and equipment to do it?
    If you answered yes to two out of the 4 questions then it might make sense to consider getting a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU (which is what most of the eGPU market is comprised of at this time) With Thunderbolt 4 on the horizon, it will become a much more exciting prospect to getting an eGPU since the bandwidth will be considerably faster.
    However, if you didn't answer yes to 2 of the questions above, I'd say its a hard pass. eGPUs are meant to preserve the laptop experience without compromising heavy duty graphics processing for professional applications and games. Its philosophy is use your laptop as is but when you need more horsepower, dock it and to preserve it by taking all of the graphics load and heat out of the laptop and onto the eGPU. Think of it like souping up a muscle car.

    I think the biggest problem of the eGPU is not the 4x PCIE or the price of the enclosure but the limitation of the low-voltage mobile CPU like intel's U series. Even with more cores added to the CPU itself, the power and thermal are still limited. Playing Fortnite and other games with light CPU usage is fine for this setup, but playing more CPU-intensive games like Witcher 3 and Watchdog 2 would not be so ideal. Intel's HQ series are better suited for these kind of games, but usually laptops with HQ grade CPU are usually equipped with better graphics in the first place.

    • @stopthrm
      @stopthrm Pƙed rokem

      it might not be 'ideal' but honestly if you get a workstation style laptop like a dell xps, precision, or thinkpad carbon you could load it up with a 4 or 6 physical core CPU and forego the onboard dedicated gpu to use an eGPU instead. Sure you probably won't get insane framerates but it shouldn't be slow or clunky either...

    The only gaming I do on my Mac is retro games (OpenEMU). I run Steam, etc on my RΛZΞR. The lack of ports on the Core X kinda sucks, but it is partly marketed towards Mac and Apple is all about cutting cords. I use a wireless keyboard and mouse for mine. The 100W PD is sweet, it'll charge up a 15-inch MBP which needs 87W. Unfortunately it wont be able to charge the new RΛZΞR Blade 15. The 1060 models ship with a 200-watt adapter and the GTX 1070 model relies on a 230-watt adapter. I wonder if they'll update the Core V2?

    I have an immediate tech question. Don't think I'm stupid for asking this... So I just built a new gaming pc but the old one I've been using is so caked up in dust, duster doesn't work and I don't have an air compressor. As far as the CPU, GPU and PSU that all have fans, could I spray the entire system down with a water hose then let it dry for a month before using it? I'm pretty sure the PSU can hold a charge so I don't want to mess it up but it's caked up in dust the most from the last place I lived with smokers. I'm sure giving it a month before turning it on afterwards would have it completely dry but how long should I leave it unplugged before all the power is drained and I can start and can I do this without shorting it out? Asking all the smart tech guys..
