    What other eGPU testing do you want to see? I want to test different laptop CPUs, different graphics cards, other applications outside of gaming, and compare with a desktop PC in future.

      In future I'd definitely like to see how much the CPUs hold these setups back. I have my suspicions they were pegged at close to max -- maybe you could use a HWinfo64 overlay with the CPU usage

    A lot of people spend $2000+ on high end gaming laptops these days. I see this technology as more of an upgrade path for those who can't justify spending another 2k+ when it's graphics become dated. It allows you to keeps your current machine for much longer. Whether you hook it up to a monitor or not; you are still seeing improvement.

      Old comment but this is exactly why I got a Core X. Laptops last a long time except for the GPUs becoming quite quickly outdated, TB3 egpu is a compromise but throwing a 30 or 40 series card into the eGPU enclosure pretty much negates this.

      It's exactly what I'm doing too.
      I've had gaming laptops for years now. I tend to be buying the XX60/70 at the £1000-£1200 mark.
      This time I'm buying a £600 laptop, £300 GPU and £300 dock. So for the first one, it's about the same cost. However, if in two years I need more CPU performance, I can just upgrade the £600 laptop. If in 4 years, the GPU needs upgrading I can just buy a more powerful GPU.
      The eGPU setup will give me enough gaming performance, but with the ability to trade out one of the components. This also makes it cheaper to repair. If your gaming laptop's GPU goes bust, then the whole system baasically needs replacing, rather than jsut the GPU.

      @@thenatous_ everything runs hot nowadays, soldered ram is a big no no but if they supply 32gb option I don't see the problem part form them making probably another 100 pounds of u on that model. I've searched a lot of gaming laptops and alienware is the only one that I've seen hit clock speed without any throttling. Razer maybe aswell but their customer service scares me. Aero having the ports on the side is a killer for me, must be from the back. I have had thick clevo gaming laptop I don't mind it being that thick or heavy but since I'm looking for a new laptop I'm gonna try get the lighter models.

    • @anupampb
      @anupampb Před 4 lety

      Thermals are similar to m15 R1, has an inverted mobo & soldered RAM, so not a good choice IMO. New Aero 15 would be a better choice or just get an older m15. Both have one of the worst thermals, Jarrod's old video is still true, only diff I observed with my RTX m15 is that it more aggressively power throttles while gaming but temps will still be 90C+ with 2.6GHz or so clock speeds. You can definitely improve it a lot with UV, boost freq limit & cooling pad but many other laptops hit higher freq for same temps after doing all those. Even new Omen 15t seems better than the older one, Ownordisown did a review.

    With the lows being so close together between the laptop screen with the core x and the external screen with the core x, i think it’s safe to say that you don’t “need” and external monitor, especially if you have a laptop with a 144 refresh rate (i understand not all of you do) but even at 60-70 fps your laptop screen should be fine.

    One thing you may not be considering is workplace applications. Some people can do 90% of their work without a graphics card but need one 10% of the time. In a team setting, you can invest in a single eGPU that can be shared among team members instead of paying to upgrade everyone's GPU for work they do 10% of the time.

    Particularly in my case using a msi gs73vr 7rg stealth pro with the gtx 1070MaxQ. I should about double my performance, I am guessing. Or at least be able to get 100 frames or so on a 42/43" monitor at 4k. That´s the main reason I want to upgrade with an eGPU by the way, I am overall still happy with my 4,5 years old stealth pro.

I ask because I've recently ordered a Blade 15 Base since the price was dropped to shift old stock before the 10th gen ones come in and had in mind to use of these down the line to up the graphical horsepower if/when I needed to; and it's been hard to find concrete metrics on that comparison.

I'm considering buying an external GPU enclosure together with an RTX 2070 Super or RTX 2080 Ti GPU in order to play Half-Life Alyx in VR. Do you think this setup could deliver good performance? As far as specs are concerned, I see that this setup does meet the recommended requirement for Half-Life Alyx. But I'm not sure whether I'm missing some important point there. 1.) The enclosure has to be less $$
    2.) Thunderbolt 3 being as common as USB
    3.) Change in technology to reduce performance loss/bottlenecking
    4.) More portable enclosures
    As it is now, it's nice for a small percentage of gamers but just seems really impractical for most.

      1 - The enclosure costs money, but it shaves it off the cost of the computer.
      2 - Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 are commonplace now.
      3 - TB3 and TB4 are basically the same. What we need is TB5, which is coming out this year, so expect it to be in laptops next year / next couple of years.

    hi jarrod, was watching your reviews, but u should put in how much fps run the games in other qualities, or using a 1050/1060 i think is more abbordable

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  Před 4 lety

      Using a 1050 is absolutely pointless with an eGPU enclosure, it would probably perform worse than a 1030, plus every single graphics card would double testing time and this already took long enough to do. I will do something in future where I test 10+ GPUs, but I definitely can't do different graphics every video. This is such an expensive and niche solution that it makes sense to show the best case scenario.

    TB3 gets way more bottlenecked at lower resolution like 1080p. Please do an analysis with a 1070/1080 comparing 1080p and 1440p in a TB3 enclosure. If possible medium settings would be appreciated as the type of person to buy a TB3 will most likely not game in max settings. Awesome vid

      Yeah it really depends how badly you want just one machine/setup, so smaller laptop for portability that you just connect with one cable to dock at home, costs more vs a well specced gaming laptop and mid range PC.

I have a Razer Blade Studio 15 with a RTX Quadro 5000 and wanted to get an eGPU to be able to stream and encode with the iGPU on the laptop , So basically I would be encoding with the iGPU and playing the game on the eGPU. Is that possible ?

    That TB3 connection is a HUGE bottleneck for a 2080 Ti unless you plan on playing at 1800p-2160p. I feel like the TB connection in that Stealth 13” is a X2 PCIe connection with that level of performance.
    I would definitely like to see a test with the Alienware Graphics Amplifier 2080 Ti setup, assuming you get any Alienware laptops to test with soon.

      Unfortunately I cannot get it at the moment. They are based in the US and I'm in Australia, and return shipping costs a fair bit of money for me to borrow it. It will likely be available here rebranded by some other company I suspect, then it may be possible. Otherwise if Eluktronics are happy to cover the cost of sending it here I am more than happy to test it out on the channel.

    Seems like the Razer Blade Stealth + 2080 ti eGPU to external monitor setup is approximately equal to a 15 inch gaming laptop with an RTX 2060 Max-P. A laptop with an RTX 2080 Max-Q would run about 30 FPS on average higher then the Razer Blade/eGPU/external monitor setup all else being equal.

    • @JarrodsTech

    • @fenrir5986
      @fenrir5986 Před 4 lety

      And with price of all setup (except laptop) would cost more than a gaming laptop with a great gpu like 2060 or even 2080, so I guess it's a bad idea to use egpu

    • @RogueSchoIar
      @RogueSchoIar Před 4 lety

      @@JarrodsTech I be curious to see how the new Razer Blade Stealth with the 10th generation Intel Ice lake processor does with the same 2080 ti eGPU setup given it would potentially present a slightly less restrictive CPU bottleneck. It would also be interesting to compare those benchmarks to those of the new Stealth's internal GTX 1650 GPU. If there is comparable performance between the two that might completely eliminate the benefits of getting an eGPU for that particular laptop.

      The best available, so a 2080 Ti - not sure I understand the question. If you mean what you need to get to see more performance than your 2060? My guess is probably a 2080 due to the bottlenecks of TB3, not sure a 2070 would give you much increase.

    I have a big questionmark in my head since a while for now... Im working with Ableton and Resulume wich is a 3D Mapping software for video projector. Im performing live music while i also show custom visualsations. My current equipment isnt good enougth to handle both and i need to step up a little bit for now. My Struggle is im not sure about using 2 different Notebook, one for my music stuff and a gaming notebook for the visualisations or shoud i get a egpu instead of a second notebook? i Need to connect 3 Small LED projectors and need one display for Ableton to control my music stuff. Can i connect the 3 projectors to the egpu and control the program still on a good 13 inch? woudl it have enough power? I have not found anyone in the internet who is writing about my problems so i have no clue what i need to get to make it possible. I cant transport a desktop+ keyboard + screen + my audio stuff at once.. and i have some gigs while i just do music.. Maybe somone here who have a little knowladge in this point? Im begging for help. Thanks in advance. this questions goes to everyone here. Best wishes, Sascha ... Sorry for that typo, if watched so many reviews that my brain is just melted :D thanks for your work Jarrod btw,..
