Notice the fact that he was probably 20 years ahead of his time. He was a consistent shooter from what we call the three point line even before it was established. He influenced magic who influenced every other flashy point guard. He created moves that no one uses anymore due to the difficulty of the move. He created moves no one saw and left judges and casters speachless and their only words were "I've never seen this before." He had the jelly layup, the dream shake and rondo fakes, the long outlet passes even before the terms were even created and he doesn't get his name mentioned in any of them. They shouldn't be called the dream shake and pulling a rondo if there was a creater before that. It's not like he was bad at the move either
Bob Cousy did the same shit
Larry birds passing game is influenced by maravich also
J Will/White Chocolate seems to do a ton of Pistol Pete's moves.
Pete rarely took credit for his greatness. He said he learned his style of play from playing against underrated black teams in high school. He was a Christian, a humble person and I’m no basketball expert, but people who are say he was one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
dickriding
One of the very best to ever do it. Am I the only one who feels like he is under appreciated today?
Well considering how nobody can watch his highlights when nba says "this is rare footage" I'm sure we can understand why he would be considered under appreciated today in 2014.
He's probably the best player to ever play the game, but he didn't get any rings and it seems that's how great players are appreciated now..Could you imagine pairing him with a healthy in his prime Chris Webber
Yeah everyone thinks I’m crazy for having him at 5 all time but he deserves it
@@impassable r u insane his top highlights all put together r like one good game highlights from Steph and Harden. I feel like ppl under appreciate how talented the players r today
How do u like 2020
had a nickname jersey before it was cool
I feel Maravich is one of the most underrated passers when it comes to the people I know. He's awesome at misconception!
misdirection...
He's so often over looked when people talk about all time greats. Pistol Pete was the man!
In the 70s it was showtime but now its common. Im 12 and i can do all this.
Lorenshyne Yeah no you can't
Lorenshyne you are 12 and you are an idiot.....u can do those things cuz the pistol shown the world how to do em...nobody knew how to do those things before him...so u could say u are like him if u ll invent a new kind of game that nobody play, and with it become an immortal nba all time player..
Kyubi230 well yeah what +Lorenshyn is saying is right, he was ahead of his team surely, but almost every PG in the league considered a star can showcase these skills now, i still think pistol is top 10 if not 5 PG of all time.
changed basketball more than anyone
At 2:21 is one of the most amazing full court passes I've ever seen. This man was a genius with the basketball. Very underrated great
Nah that pass was crazy 🤣
Yo that pass when he was going to his left no look pass with the right hand was insane I never seen that till this day ever
I dont know him cause I was born in 1992 but WOW. His passing skills is SICK. and his moves are just amazing.
That move at 2:30 where he cups the ball and swings it behind his back and then lays it up has been engrained in my head permately.
He changed basketball forever.
1:47 ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!
Crazy shot
Ay pete go hard. Don't doubt man can't layup at the three point today lmao
its about time nba uploaded a highlight reel for him
Most creative player to ever step on a basketball court
EXACTLY.
Nope. Magic Johnson
And with such relaxed loose wrists that extended all his moves and made them truly dramatic
@@wbarnie9052 Its funny cuz Magic stole his moves.
@@wbarnie9052 magic stole his moves
Incredible, incredible player! One of the greatest. He's doing stuff we see today done by the very best players, but 50 years ago! Just amazing!
He was doing stuff then that we still Don't See today.
This man’s underrated today
If you watch the whole play leading up to the 2:08 pass he doesn't even see his teammate on the fast break. That's some crazy shit
He was literally unstoppable in NBA Street Vol 2!!
Love my boi Pistol Pete !!
He played just before the TV era and was way ahead of his time. One of the best showmen of the NBA.
Such incredible memories of this guy. I was raised in NY/NJ and had very little access to his LSU games. But the few times I saw him while in college he as out of this universe. Then the Hawks would be on in our area vs the Knicks quite a bit. I remember him with the New Orleans Jazz as well. One of that all-time greats and a showman.
I had forgotten what an incredible player he was.
First ever true showtime player, amazing shooter, and just a guy you want on your team!
His teammates hated him, so you don't know what really transpired.
@@nelsonperez5289do you have proof to back that up? A source other than a biased website from a biased reporter cause I doubt it.
I was there at the forum at the 2:30 mark and saw him do that behind the back and bring it back for the lay up. The crowd ooh and aahed . I never saw that before.
Gotta give it to him, arguably the most skilled player of all time simply because he had no reference point before him
Homie was literally just making all these moves up whether he seen it in the streets or however but nobody was this creative without anything to study from
Everybody watched somebody
Almost like the Jimi Hendrix or Picasso of basketball.
Was he a good long range shooter tho? Ive only seen mid range in these videos
@@wbarnie9052in his lone season where 3 points shots were a thing he shot 66%
@@wbarnie9052apparently if he had played in college with a 3pt line he would've made 13 3s per game
Pistol Pete Maravich is a treasure. Sad he’s not talked about more in todays day and age
Looks like a Rajon Rondo WITH shooting skills. :o
much better shooting skills, mean 30 ppg
@@2000Vinciusfrom thirty feet out. That is almost to the logo.
Before there was Stockton, Nash, and Rubio, there was Pistol Pete.
Izain Kiddes You forgot jason williams, and jason kidd
How the hell did you forgot jason williams? Dude invented the elbow pass fuckin asshole
Rubio = a joke
You forgot Magic Johnson Larry bird Michael Jordan, pistol was the first basketball god ever , better then wilt
Pistol Pete was a way better scorer than them.
Also had more moves than all of them combuned.
Easily one of the greatest skill sets in history. Dude was making an AND1 mixtape during NBA games.
Man was years ahead of his time with the moves he did back then.
Hes awwsome. Definetely made the gameba lot better with those stylish assists. RIP
He really enjoyed playing basketball in general, this is what you call a "baller". take notes youngsters
3 Point line, and Pistol would have been amazing. The floor spacing would have allow him to advance the game like Step!
Guy was just UNBELIEVABLE, a keenly skilled magician making fools out of the opposition at will.
Is it me or this guy plays like a modern basketball i mean the way he handle and pass the ball like that. Dude's a time traveller
well said sir. I agree 10000000%
Pistol Pete! My dad taught me about him when I was a child. Pete was ahead of his time as a ball player.
He was ahead of times.... My favorite player... smart... very smart player!!!! RIP Pistol Pete!
The man who taught me Basketball! Best Ever! Still have the VHS somewhere in the storage, No One in the NBA can match his Ball Handling and Passing skills! ONE OF A KIND! RIP
Allen Iversons handling and John Stockton passing?
***** those are 2 people. Pistol was as adept at both all by himself
***** those are 2 people. Pistol was as adept at both all by himself
U must havent watched basketball in the last 30 yrs..90 % of point guards can dribble better than that..his passing was impressive tho..I didnt kno players could pass like that..
James Hopkins
No point guard can dribble as well as him, nor likely ever will. Pete was not allowed to palm and carry and run with the ball the way the rules allow today, if he played with today's rules there would have to be a 15 minute segment on Sports Center just for his nightly highlights.
How great was it that his jersey had "Pistol" on the back of it? Sad that that could never happen today, even in the nickname jersey games.
Who’s here in 2024 after Caitlin Clark!?
For me, Pete is the greatest player of all time ( FOR ME )
RIP Pete Maravich was a beast. Should have played in the league longer
Yes, it would have been nice if that had happened, but injuries -- nasty knee injuries in particular, forced him to retire before his time. He got to play the last part of his final season with the Celtics and Larry Bird. The NBA finally instituted the three point shot that season, and Maravich shot 67% from behind the arc. Just imagine how many points he would have averaged had that arc been there for his entire 10-year career? He was a cross between Harlem Globetrotter and NBA professional. He was fundamentally sound, but played with pizzaz and flair. He gave the fans a show.
@@edwardwilliamson1863it’s crazy he even played 10 years considering only half his heart was functioning. It’s too bad those injuries got the best of him though. He always be in my top 5 players ever no doubt. His name my fade into myth and eventually will be largely forgotten but I will remember til my dying breath. We lost a legend too soon
Simply the most skilled (yes, the most skilled) player to ever play in the NBA or otherwise play basketball. Dude was trained into being a basketball machine by his father since he was a kid. His handles were outstanding, none in my opinion even matches his ball-handling skills. His shooting was legendary in a period without a 3 point line, 45 points average in the NCAA and 24 points average in the NBA (one season he averaged 31 points). He obviously could have done better in the NBA if it weren't for injuries, off the court problems (devastating news of his mom taking her own life because she wasn't given attention to due to basketball, alcoholism [he even played games super drunk] and other stuff) and problems being in the league (one of a few players to get a 1 million $ contract at the time is bound to be pressured by teammates and everybody alike).
pistol pete was a beast... he could still play in today's game without a doubt
Mike Chrisman idk about today's game... He could MAYBE play as good as Derrick rose after the injury...
Jared From Subway What? Pete's game translates almost perfectly to today. Pistol would pull up from as far as 30 feet, before there was a 3 point line, and sink them effortlessly. He's one of the best shooters of all time.
The only modern NBA comparison I can think of is Steph Curry.
Mike Chrisman he would get demolished
Elijah Fields-Carlisle you've never played
WHATEVER'S CLEVER hes dead sadly 😭😭😭
Thanks for the video, NBA
Was waiting for the behind the back fake and when he did it right at the end *joyous*!
I'm lost for words those plays were amazing I wanna go try some of these right now!!!
Poor man's Rubio? Pete is one of NBA's 50 greatest players. Averaged 40 points in college. Rubio isn't even close.
Rubio would be Pistol Petes backup that would play 10 or less minutes per game.
who ever compared him to Ricky Rubio…
Examining the tape of LSU games, some people have concluded that if there was a 3-point line, Pete would have averaged 50 a game. Hard to think of anyone who could do more creative things with a basketball.
Love and Respect to one one of the greatest to ever lace up on the hardwood.
Pistol pete maravich a man of god and a true legend.
I didn't see my fave Maravich moment which I still remember watching as a kid. Fast break against the Lakers he's in the right lane and he does a behind the back pass that travels THROUGH the LEGS of Kareem (I believe) to his man for a layup. Does anyone remember that all time play?
+Seth Jacobson Never saw it but totally believe he did that. Wish I would have seen it..
Maravich did something similar while on the Hawks where he was breaking down the wing on the left and running at the defender who had his arms up and his legs slightly apart in a defensive stance. He then threw a behind the back pass THROUGH HIS OWN LEGS AND THROUGH THE DEFENDERS LEGS ALL IN ONE SMOOTH MOTION just as he stopped and was almost chest to chest with the defender. The ball went through the tight space between both their legs, across the key on one short bounce, and right up and into the waiting arms of his teammate who was cutting in for the basket!! He also threw this pass with his left (off) hand, which if you know anything about Maravich is that although he was technically a righty, he was almost totally ambidextrous. The most amazing thing about it was that his teammates knew to move and cut away from the obvious flow of action and went to areas and spots on the court that would normally be impossible to receive passes from. Except that they all knew that Maravich could DO the impossible on a basketball court, having seen him do these kinds of miraculous things time in and time out in practice, scrimmages and games. He was truly one of a kind and totally unique. An unrepeatable creative genius the likes of Mozart and Paganini.
Also I know he did this move because I actually saw it on a tv news highlight show. Wish I had had a video/beta recorder back in the day!
I didn’t even know that 😂. Just proves how unmatched Pete was in not only that era but even in the eras after. He was just a different beast. No disrespect to ANY legend out there. That’s all I got to say. Unfortunately the more Basketball fans that we get the more disrespect that’s being put on the Legends. It outrageous what kids be saying today about those who pioneered the game into what it is. 😢
I miss Pistol Pete so very very much. I feel lucky to be old enough to have watched him live.
Damn Brandon Jennings actually has a very similar playing style this season, he has used a lot of his moves particularly the tricky passes and fakes. Jennings used to always upload photos of Pistol Pete on his Instagram and he is actually reflecting his style of play.
Pistons fans know what I'm talking about!
Btw, I AM NOT comparing Jennings to Pistol Pete, obviously Jennings is probably only just an above average NBA player whereas Pistol Pete is an all time great, just an interesting pickup
That's a better video quality then some teams put up now, like kings or pelicans
sick sick assists
They should show some Petrovic highlight reels!
Not a highlight reel but still a cool video
watch?v=tVaFtZskj08
One time my grandpa told me a story how he met Pete Maravich when he played for lsu at a camp with his dad and he said to me I should of met him in person cause he was a showman rip Pete but,thx for being my inspiration for gettting better.
I hate the word, but this guy had swag!
.* No shame in using punctuation and being intelligent.
what word
Leaviro swag
Steve Nash+Rajon Rondo+Jason Kidd+Jason Williams all together
+Ricky Rubio
without rondos or jason kids defence thoughthey far surpass him there
Benjamin Woo doesnt have Rondo noe Kidds defense now toughness, doesnt have Jason Williams quickness, doesnt have Nash's shot.
chukk mane u do realize he wad the only one shooting from the 3 line without the 3 line existing. And u do realize how he scored 44 pts per game in college without the three line
44 ppg without 3pt line, 59 ppg if calculated correctly with arc line..nash who?.. and nash said all their moves were started by pete
nice to see throwback
Amazing player, he died doing what he loved. Tragic how young he was though.
He was before his time
Wow! Barely ever heard of this guy but I am very impressed! Ahead of his time and very talented!
I was born in 99 and he's one of my fav players all-time if that tells you anything about the influence he still has on people
Onparr's highlight reel will always be the best!
Amazing
Undoubtedly the greatest scorer the NCAA has ever seen. His scoring record hasn't even come close to being touched, and he did it in 3 years AND without a 3 point line (even though a lot of his shots were beyond where the 3 point line would be)
This guy is amazing
way ahead of his time!
First of all, You hardly ever see underhand passes(which are amazing, when executed), second, who in the hell gave this a thumbs down? Really?
Man,his play and skills were way ahead of his time...
Rubio + a shoot= Pistol Pete 2.0
a shoot? lol
Ricky Rubio is not even close to the Pistol. Pete introduced the United States to showtime basketball and influenced so many after him ie. Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, and Jason Williams. He showed that basketball doesn't just take strength and height it takes skill, confidence, and the art of deception. Ricky Rubio should not even be on the mind of anyone when remembering Pistol Pete. If it is than that poor person should never watch basketball again thats just plain silly. Plus Rubio needs much more than a shot, he needs to develop a shot, confidence in that shot, the ability to stay calm, and he needs to improve foot work.
Zach Bailey Don't forget Bird, Magic & Isiah. Pete had a huge influence on those guys. They used a lot of The Pistols passes on a regular. Pete introduced street to the professional level at a time when that style of play was frowned upon & deemed 'hot doggin'. They didn't even let the college guys dunk early on smh. The Pistol was doing thing you could only see at Rucker Park, that wasn't televised. The original Harlem Globetrotter type shit lol.
Zach Bailey lol wtf are u talking about ricky rubio plays just like this man, do u even watch him or are u just talking?
Get the fuck outta here.... And I'm flagging this bullshit
Pistol is among the all time greats.
Dude had eyes on his temples. Crazy,
That was awesome
one of the most underrated superstars ever
best passer I`ve seen and i`ve been watching since the 60`s
Still my favorite player of all time it was like watching a beautiful symphony in motion.
Jason williams is smilling :3
A legend that died too soon. R.I.P Pete.
No 3 in his day. Still NCAA scoring champ w/o freshman eligibility. Greatest ballhandler EVER. Pete was all that.
Bro! Pistol Pete be slingin’ DIMES!
he is still my fav player in nba2k love him so much miss u pete
amazing.
That last play was ridiculous!
some of these moves are simply incredible... i don't think there are many players nowdays that can do this
A true legend
U the best thanks you
Can we please show some love for those amazing underhand outlet passes?!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
amazing
This man was like 35 years ahead of his time. Would fit right in 2024 also
Legend!
GREATEST ball handler EVER!!
1:39 that move still used up to this day. Pistol Pete is ahead of time
watched my bro just sit there and yell "HOW DO YOU DO THAT" at the screen haha
Gotta love the 3/4 court scoop pass
WOW Guys been finessin forever
muito emocionante, esse cara faz do basquete uma arte
The greatest pure point guard of his era.
BALLIN HARD
My goodness, they gotta show these clips more often.. they’re nasty
I want a copy of that music ! That's some space age sound !
Modern game in the 70's. Damn
He was way ahead of his time. The move he did 50 years ago was done by today players since the 2000s.
As a skill set I honestly feel he is the best player ever. If it wasn't for his health problems, I think he would've been top 10-15 to ever play the game. Nobody is more fundamentally sound than Pistol Pete.
