And that was after the back injury, when he couldn't sit down and had to be in traction all day before the game just to play. So Larry was playing with a deformed index finger on his shooting hand that was permanently bent in a 45 degree angle pointing towards his thumb I believe, a back injury that was so bad that he couldn't even sit down on the bench, he had to lay on the floor, a fractured cheek bone, and a concussion to boot. And he STILL kicked ass! That's why he's the GOAT as far as I'm concerned. He did it better than everyone else (including MJ) while being injured and not as gifted physically (speed and jumping).

Fresh off spinal surgery that year and having to wear a back brace between practice and games, his surgeon had said publicly he had no idea how Larry could keep playing.
He also couldnt sit on the bench - hence why you see him laying down and squatting near the bench - due to severe back pain.
Then he goes down in the 2nd quarter, fractures his eye socket and cops a grade 3 concussion (your out for weeks in modern sport if this happens) come back on in the 2nd half and literally plays 'unconscious'.
He said later he only remembers the game in parts due to his concussion.

Who has a better highlight reel than Larry Bird? Threes, dunks, passes, no looks, ridiculous layups, impossible jumpers, dribble moves, breaking ankles, trash talking, game winners, fade away threes, championships… goes on and on. Only Lebron comes close, Kobe and Jordan highlights wouldn’t have many passes. Bird is special.

Lot of dirty stuff back then. If bird played as long as LeBron will, I think it would be bird overall #1. Here's a new one about Larry Bird that I just found. Larry was a redshirt his first year at Indiana State, after transferring from Indiana. Bird had to sit out his first year because of the transfer. The coach at ISU stopped letting Larry scrimmage with the team because his team always won and the starters were getting discouraged. Larry threatened to quit...the coaches met with Larry and this occurred: Head Coach King explained to Bird that the reason he limited his minutes in practice was to save his starters from humiliation-the other players needed to win sometimes. “To hell with them,” Bird answered. “If they can’t win, then they ought to lose.”
“Okay,” said Coach King. “I won’t take you out anymore. You stay.” The coaches weren’t about to let Bird go anywhere. Earlier in that season, Mel Daniels, the Indiana Pacers and ABA great, had visited Terre Haute at the request of Coach King, who had coached Daniels at the University of New Mexico. Daniels brought along Pacers teammate, ABA great, and future Naismith Hall of Famer Roger Brown for an afternoon of pick-up ball with some of the Sycamores, including Bird. After the game, Daniels, himself a future Hall of Famer, offered King and Hodges a scouting report on Bird. “Let me tell you something, Coach,” said Daniels. “That’s the best damn player I’ve ever played against.” Roger Brown, who rarely, if ever, gave compliments or praise, agreed. “Ah, come on, Mel,” said Assistant Coach Bill Hodges. He laughed, noting that Daniels had played among the likes of Connie Hawkins, Julius Erving, and George McGinnis. “I’m telling you,” said Daniels, “the best damn player I’ve ever played against.”

Being a Knick fan since the 1970's I NEVER liked the Celtics. But in ALL my years of watching the NBA, Larry Bird stands out as being the most Skilled NBA Player of all time. Add that to his Vision, dedication and heart...to me that makes him the GOAT. Made everybody better. Tough when you try to compare eras and positions into the mix. Back in the day, Wilt Chamberlain was pretty much the most dominating player of HIS time. Did he have more BB skills than Bird, Jordan, Oscar or Kobe....no way. Bill Russell....cannot say enough about that guy. The GOAT is a tough conversation to have...extremely SUBJECTIVE....but without a doubt...Bird has done more INCREDIBLE things with a BB than ANY player I have ever seen in ALL my years. He is my second favorite player behind Walt Frazier...again I AM a Knick fan...another unusual thing from the 1980s...when Bird was on Network TV....the playgrounds emptied to watch....did NOT MATTER what you were doing and who your favorite team was. Larry is a Legend and the GOAT in my opinion. Abosutely sensational. The likes of him will never be seen again. lebron is an unreal talent and a physical god, but the skill of larry bird is just unreal, shown in this mixtape. larry can't do a 360 windmill over someone, but larry could finesse the living shit outta you

Bird was a superior athlete to lebron in many ways. Bird just didn't have elite jumping and sprinting. Birds quickness and handspeed were miles better than Lebron.

I think Bird is actually underrated by many. We all know the MVP sometimes is political, and they give it to guys who aren't actually the best player in a given year. But if you're the best player in the league, you will generally finish top 2 in the MVP. That's why I think top 2 MVP finishes is probably the best stat for individual achievement.
Who has the most top 2 MVP finishes in history? Jordan and Lebron both have 8. Bird is next with 7.
So from 81-88, Bird finished top 2 in the MVP every year (7 times), while playing against:
Kareem Abdul Jabbar (7 years, 6 MVPs)
Magic Johnson (7 years, 3 MVPs)
    Dr J (6 years, 1 MVP)
Moses Malone (7 years, 3 MVPs)
Michael Jordan (4 years, 6 MVPs)
Karl Malone (4 years, 2 MVPs)
Charles Barkley (4 years, 1 MVP)
Hakeem Olajuwon (4 years, 2 MVPs)
    Isiah Thomas (6 years)
    Dominique Wilkins
    Bernard King
    John Stockton
    Scottie Pippen
    Patrick Ewing
There's a strong argument for Bird to be top 3 all time
