- It's the Pan Pacific Gran Prix Championship, and Barry Fife will stop at nothing to make sure dance's newest duo doesn't win.
In this scene: Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio), Fran (Tara Morice), Barry Fife (Bill Hunter), Liz Holt (Gia Carides), Shirley Hastings (Pat Thomson)
About Strictly Ballroom:
This wildly off-beat comedy is about a male dancer who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates the ballroom dancing establishment. Before he's scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he's forced to take up a new partner, a beginner who initially seems without promise. With his help, she turns into an assured and wonderful dancer.

That knee slide gives me goosebumps every time 🙌
Me too
Like but cannot 'like'...right there at 123
But beware. A friend of mine who was a high school teacher did it several times at a school dance. The kids loved it and were cheering for him. But the 3rd or 4th time, he split the knees of his dress slacks. Oops.
Somewhere there's a video on CZcams of a dancer reviewing Strictly Ballroom and I learnt that the scene would not be possible in the trousers Paul Mercurio wears....they are synthetic and the knees would have burnt through....so he was actually on a trolley for the most part....but the reviewer....and I, still love this movie so much.
This dance and choreography really celebrate the feminine and the masculine energy in balance. So beautiful 😻
This movie couldn’t have been better timed than it was, to coincide with the Barcelona Olympics in ‘92, simultaneously reigniting an interest worldwide in Spanish dance and Latin pop that dominated the mid to late 90’s; its legacy as a stand-alone movie is often overlooked outside Australia but the success of the likes of reality shows such as ‘Dancing With The Stars’ or ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ nowadays, all over the world, owes a debt of gratitude to this movie. 💃🏽🕺🏻
this movie was very popular in Russia in the late 90s because as a nation Russians are obsessed with ballroom
I’m watching this one clip on repeat just to see Scott slide onto the dance floor
honestly same tho
Me too!
@@patvonzidkow6913 -- what an entrance!
A victory slide.
RIGHT?!?! ❤❤❤❤💯💢Explosive entrance❤❤❤
Awww man! They cut it off before the best part when the crowd starts clapping out the beat and they finish the dance. That was a powerful and moving scene. One of my favorite dance movies
I was watching the entire thing just for that scene! I agree with you fully!
czcams.com/video/tFDYHFbisek/video.html Here's the finale!
I was right there ready to start the clap!!
That's what I was waiting for!!!! LOL!
Totally underrated movie! One of the best
Did you know that Paul Mercurio actually danced this entire scene with a sprained ankle? That is true dedication to your craft as a dancer.
Dancers are pro athletes. Any pro will tell you that they are NEVER 100%. Was it a Grade i, II, or III sprain? Which ligament was stretched? Anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), or the posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL)? Just saying “sprain” means nothing. Ligaments hold the bones together--doesn’t involve the muscles--so with good taping it’s possible to keep going. Now if a MUSCLE was injured that’s different.
Helen Eschenbacher having had a grade three sprain myself, I can honestly say that your not going to be able to do much of anything on it. A grade 2 is iffy, but a grade one can be walked off as the saying goes.
Beeton also the first day of filming this movie they did these scenes.
@@heleneschenbacher8512 I love dancesport and I did that, so if I were Hastings with that injury, I would have to focus on cutting back on excessive twisting especially in the check steps and cross steps in the authentic flamenco-paso dance, and focus on stepping on more the balls of the feet instead of the ankles for lesser impact and lesser chance of exacerbating injury.
@@charlessmith263 ya gotta watch yer ball-change mate
I get so teary eyed everytime I watch this scene....cos my aunt loved Latin and ballroom so much,we ended up Latin dancers...I chose the design aspect of it,the costumes,my cousin now lives in London....a fabulous and talented dancer...Baz Lurhman did a great job with this movie
I absolutely love this movie. This part was the best especially when they dance with no music! You needed to show the entire dance.
I actually prefer Strictly Ballroom to Dirty Dancing personally. I mean... latino social paso-doble. There was no way it would be surpassed by the other film's dancing style because the southern dances are just so perfect . And Tara Morice's performance was spot on. Starting as the weird no so good looking, becoming more and more beautiful as time went on, to glow and shine like the sun, attracting everyone's glance in that final, passionate and intense performance.
i would still rather have danced with patrick than with paul 🤔🤔
I also love how Fran made herself over and not him. She even got a make over from his mum but didn't take it on because that's not the real her or her real style.
Her becoming more conventionally pretty has more to do with her growing I confidence and showing more of her real self than a haircut and a new dress.
@@kittikats yes!! before her transformation, it felt like she was hiding. it didn't feel like "girl takes off her glasses and tames her hair and suddenly she's pretty" trope. it felt like "girl was using her glasses and hair to hide herself and once she started gaining more confidence, she allowed herself to no longer hide/be covered up"
@@kittikatsthat is so true. Fran always was a beauty deep inside. It was the confidence she gained through her growth that made her outshine them all in the end.
One of my favourite movies of all time :) Best paso doble ever
Me too!
Me toooo.
Saw it when I was in high school !!!!
Same here. It looks so intense and passionate.
I love this movie. That final dance made me cry of joy!
In paso doble, the man is the bull and the girl is the red cloth... I love the scene how they came on the dance floor...
Jessie Wang actually I dance ballroom and the girl is the bull and the boy is like the bull tamer
ed cloth
@@elenabuscu4342 Actually the guy is the torero and the girl is the carpa - the cape which is used to tame the bull.
@@chloe-ev3qk no you are correct, the guy is the bull and the girl represents the cape that is why she wears a red dress.
@@chloe-ev3qk The man is the matador and the woman is his cape.
As a ballroom dancer myself for many years- the man is the matador. The woman portrays both the cape and the bull throughout the dance (depending on choreography)
Just goes to show.. high waisted pants can be very flattering
We need more Ballroom dancing films :/
WE NEED MORE BALLROOM DANCING 💃😍😍😍
You have dirty dancing ; lambada the prohibide dance and, salsa-margarita , dance with me and footloose
Now that's an entrance
Well done Miramax for cutting off the most interesting part of the dance
Goosebumps every single time!!!
there is a real sense of artistry in that dance. you could feel each movement as it is precise and has meaning. barry fife was afraid because it felt new and exciting and he didn't want that.
One of our favorite movies ever.
My Mom showed me this movie when I was a child and I still love it 😍♥️
I love Fran's red dress :D so pretty
Such a fantastic film! The costuming and dancing is great and has two main leads you actually want to see get together
I love how over the course of the movie Fran gets more feminine in her clothing, hair and make up but it's because SHE is growing in confidence in herself instead of a make over and suddenly being "hot".
Also the changes are subtle. No haircut, no drastic change in style.
This is the most badass music of all time
I loved this movie! The dancing was incredible. Wonderful job by the whole cast.
I downloaded this amazing movie ... just to see Scott Hastings and his surprising dance ... this clip is the best part of it!!!!!!
These two are so adorable I cant watch them without tears
Haven’t seen this movie in years but it’s still so satisfying.
One of my favorite movies of all time!!!!
I'm a war-history movie buff. But this is one of my favorites.
i loved this movie as i watched it as a kid... encouraging.
One of my favourite film scenes.
THIS movie made me like ballroom dance. I rented it several times. A joy.
Sandra Nelson - I rented it so many times, I finally bought the DVD.
Bcoz of this movie, I start watching salsa beginners moves from You tube. I like to dance such step moves. U can feel heartbeat in first 5 minutes n can get weight loss too instead of walking or jogging.
I love this film so much. Its one of my faves.
One of my favorite films.
When I lived in America as a kid I saw this movie and had no idea where this accent was from 🤣🤣🤣
I used to hate Spanish class. In one watch, this movie made me obsessed with not only the Spanish language but also obsessed about Latin and Iberian history and culture.
he is amazing, he turned down the role in PRISILLA he should have been a HUGE star
love him
best movie ever still is and always will be
That jacket ❤️❤️❤️
Australian movie so weird,, but the dancer are fantastic
Paul Mecurio actually led this entire dance.
The only time I've ever seen it to be about the matedore, rather than the Cape...
this > every single super hero entrance ever
Donald Trump's Aussie accent was absolutely OP in this film!
That's exactly what I said when my class watched this movie in English
Hahahahaha
What's OP?
On point Imca
😂 😂 😂
I never noticed the 'whoshing' sound effects XD
wtf? Tears are flowing. Now I'll need to pay the DVD capture.
The Paso Dobles sizzles when done right. This made my blood boil.
Classic Aussie Cinema 👍
i love this scene, but it's always bothered me that Fran managed to get perfect hair and make up in what could be no more then two minutes!
I always noticed that too! I suppose one thing that could make sense: Her hair and makeup are classic and frame her instead of “showcasing” her. So maybe she has a hidden talent for speed tight-eye lining? A hair clasp, a curl fixed in place and her lips look berry-juice stained, not lined and filled.
Maybe maybe maybe?
YOU'RE SPOILING THE MAGIC!!!
Grandma is magic lol 😆
If u love the scene, how do u have time to focus on anything besides the beautiful dance and the true love energy between the dancers.
I LOVE THE ENDING
Прикрасный танец пара очень красивый
Wonderful Film and the dance is beautiful.
Wow Ric Flair in World Championship Dancing..
Bellissimo! ......and what a bum on that Paul!!!
Paul’s in his 50s now and involved in politics. Bit of a change indeed.
Brilliant movie. His father, American born Australian, was also an actor and a boxer. Gus Mercurio
Perfect!
Очень прекрасный танец
Best dance movie
I loved this movie I watched it 4 times ❤
La mejor película tipo comedia musical que ví en mi vida!!!
This is classic!
Love this movie
The Toledo flamenco dancer who wanted Fran to dance with Scott says "premio!" as they run back to the competition floor for the paso doble round. It means "prize" in Spanish - a tip-off that the Toledo family wants Fran and Scott to win 1st place in the paso - even if there is a risk of disqualification in the attempt to win that "el primer lugar en el deporte de baile." (first place in dancesport)
Fran and Scott are eventually DQed after their flashy paso dance because of these violations - not dancing with Tina Sparkles when required, Scott making up dance steps in contravention of the Australian Dance Federation's standards under Barry File, and for excessive flaunting of costuming - the Spanish matador costume worn by Scott is an inappropriate use of advantage against the other dancesport couples wearing not-so-overly-flashy garb, causing severe disrespect in the dress code as well as disrespect to the other dancers on the floor as well as the sport - all of that is why Fran and Scott ended up disqualified.
I do feel so sorry for those kids. First they're running and screaming from adults, then they can't get the console to work because the main line was cut.
Eu amo este filme ele me faz reviver um bom tempo da minha vida
but in my books always a star he raised kids and danced a true star
Fue la primera película de baile que ví, y me encanta
I’m doing this for my school production omggg ❤

ITS A GREAT MOVIE AND GREAT CAST ALL OVER
Wow who knew that Ric Flair was such a great dancer?
I love this movie.
This feels a lot like Dirty Dancing. 😍
Eu só gostaria de assistir este filme completo
A sprained ankle? Like hell!
Bogo pogo 😂
"We heve uh duskwuluvocation"
True
❤️❤️❤️
Before that clip, basically, they start the paso doble music right on cue and with Tina Sparkles waiting 10 feet from the dancesport floor to dance with Scott Hastings, she now realizes that because the paso doble music started, Tina knows that she cannot dance on the floor as soon as the DJed music began, and because she really wanted to dance with Scott Hastings - but now realizes that she cannot dance with Scott - she bursts out into tears at the start of the music, and then storms out of the main competition floor away from Les's and Barry's sight.
That was Lizzy, Tina Sparkle is dancing with Ken in the blue and white
Deberian de ponerla en español esta pelicula esta muy padre
Bellissimo questo film peccato che non si vede più in italiano, in nessuna piattaforma 😭
Thanks to Year 12 Australia English 2009 I had to this for my HSC and know what all the meaning all for Belonging. Still though at least it helps with entrusting movie.
Are there subtitles?
Sympa ! On a enlevé la prise! Le mec était pourtant génial ! Merci
When I was a kid, I used to love this story so much. Thanks to beautiful Dakota Johnson and her TeaTime pictures production company Instagram account for reminding me about this movie.
I think this movie inspired "Strictly come dancing" Novice trained by professional
Also, Dancing With The Stars in America.
👏👏👏👏
Never noted before now how much Barry Fife looks like Donald Trump.
I have seen movies 35 yesrs ago l got boray also loves this movies
One last hurrah
Come on. The entire dance. Damn! I have to get part two somewhere else.
