    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Alejandro (Antonio Banderas) dances provocatively with Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones), much to the chagrin of Montero (Stuart Wilson).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Martin Campbell, well-known to the action arena after 1995's GoldenEye, teams up with executive producer Steven Spielberg to bring the first Hollywood production of creator Johnston McCulley's Zorro in over four decades to the big screen. With scenic 18th century Mexico as a backdrop, Anthony Hopkins plays the original Zorro, a.k.a. Don Diego de la Vega, intent on revenge after rival enemy Don Raphael Montero (Stuart Wilson) murdered his wife and took his daughter, Elena. After being imprisoned for 20 years, the fabled hero removes his mask and takes on a tarnished young apprentice, Alejandro Murieta (Antonio Banderas), to infiltrate Montero's plan to take control of California from Santa Anna. A boisterous outlaw with his own desire for revenge, Murieta works with Diego to avenge his brother's death by the sword of Montero's right-hand man, Captain Harrison Love (Matt Letscher, in his big screen debut). After Diego's extensive training in swordfighting, discipline and manners, a new Zorro appears wreaking vengeance and stealing the heart of a now-grown Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones). A sizable summer hit, the film served as Zeta-Jones' stepping stone to leading lady status as the high-spirited heroine.

While the dance is beautiful and passionate, I find it so interesting to watch their faces at the end when Don Rafael comes up. Alejandro's comments are chosen with care to accomplish his purposes, but Elena is just shocked that he could say them that way after how they just danced. And when she leaves, shocked and probably hurt, right when Don Rafael turns to look after her, Alejandro winces. I like that Antonio Banderas choose to include that. It's a brief and fleeting moment, but it really conveys a lot about his character. He had to do it, but he also noticed how it affected Elena and put a bad note on the end of their romantic dance, and he regrets the necessity of it. I just like that he made that decision as an actor, even for such a small moment easy to miss.

He was very well trained in sword fighting aka the deadly dance. You did see the two Tonys dance together. Professional dancers, especially ballet, do learn the basics of fencing. The moves and techniques are similar. Both Banderas and Hopkins started their careers as stage actors so they no doubt learned the basics. Classical plays, especially Shakespeare, require at least one sword fight scene. A lot of overlap with the two skills.

Just like with fencing, his master taught Alejandro all the proper steps and move placements/timings, which is necessary for it to be _good dancing._ However, you can’t truly teach someone how to move with passion, which is something they need to bring on their own in order to make it _great dancing._

I found it so stupid that it was more than I could bare, especially since I had enjoyed the first one so much. For me, Anthony Hopkins's character was the heart and soul that tied everything together in the very clever original scenario. Still not a masterpiece, but you had everything to spend a really great time: the master and the rookie helping each other to accomplish their vengeance, the seduction game between Elena and Alejandro, a loving father unable to reveal his identity to the daughter that had been taken from him for so long until he's about to die, etc. But in the sequel, everything felt wrong: a lame script, transparent characters, ridiculous lines, no more true alchemy in the couple, you name it...

Catherine was the most beautiful woman in the universe back then! Late 90s & early 2000s, but this was her very highlight! I was still in kindergraten when this came out, and I remember other boys teasing me for favoring Zorro over other heroes (he has no powers la la like Spiderman, Hulk etc) - and I was like, well at least he relies on himself and he is way more realistic than any other hero out there (maybe only Robin Hood could compare). I adored his mask, cape, sword & TORNADO (black stallions are my fave horses since then!), his passion for justice & revenge... And because my real name starts with N, I would usually revers the N letter to the side, to get Z, like ZORRO!
