    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Frank (Al Pacino) teaches the beautiful and charming Donna (Gabrielle Anwar) how to dance the tango.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Driven by an extravagant, tour-de-force performance by Al Pacino, Scent of a Woman is the story of Frank Slade (Pacino), a blind, retired army colonel who hires Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell), a poor college student on the verge of expulsion, to take care of him over Thanksgiving weekend. At the beginning of the weekend, Frank takes Charlie to New York, where he reveals to the student that he intends to visit his family, have a few terrific meals, sleep with a beautiful woman and, finally, commit suicide. The film follows the mis-matched pair over the course of the weekend, as they learn about life through their series of adventures. Though the story is a little contrived and predictable, it pulls all the right strings, thanks to O'Donnell's sympathetic supporting role and Pacino's powerful lead performance, for which he won his first Academy Award. Scent of a Woman is based on the 1975 Italian film Profumo Di Donna.

Gabrielle Anwar explained that she went through "a yearlong audition process that ultimately resulted in two days of work and became just seven minutes of the film". But what an absolutely magical seven minutes. She captured the shyness, nervousness, growing confidence, excitement, chemistry and fun perfectly. She also never rehearsed with Pacino, by his design. Making it very spontaneous.

I used to play violin and was a teenager when I first saw this movie, and this scene in particular. It did smth with me and I went straight to my violin professor and said that I heard the most beautiful tango melody and that I wanted us to play it (he had a little tango orchester that I was also part of). But there was no internet back then and I did not know the name of the piece, just the movie, so my dear prof. Milev rented a VHS, listened to it multiple times and wrote down every single voice of each instrument. And gave me the honour to play the 1st violin. That is now over 25 years, I stopped playing violin and moved to a different country, but I still have those keys that his own hand wrote down. And I will keep and treasure them for as long as I live.

For me, what makes this scene so enchanting is its portrayal of something theoretically impossible to be captured by a camera - the vibrant essence of life. Just as many comments have rightly pointed out, Gabrielle's contribution should not be overlooked. Apart from the undeniable vitality displayed by Al Pacino's character, Gabrielle's emergence from waiting and her attempt at tango also embody this vitality. For me, this is one of the most captivating aspects of this work, as it has the power to move any viewer who can appreciate the beauty of life

I think the argument could be made that Toy Story, The Lion King, Gladiator, Titanic, Armageddon....that these are all very emotional movies. This idea that things in the past are better gets thrown around a lot. I love when old people say older music was less repetitive and more unique or even less vulgar....It couldn't be farther from the truth. Ever heard the song Wipeout? Ever heard My Big Ten Inch? This movie is what of the reason Pacino is the Pantheon of artistry. His portrayal of he forgotten soldier who was blind and forgotten and no longer able to live the glory days but taken one last tour of the delicacies of existence while no longer been able to see but able to dance the Tango the way he did, smashed all other contenders for the Oscar. A remarkable performance. I absolutely love this movie.

Felicitaciones

several years ago at charity gala dinner he gave a speech and then asked me to dance the tango with him to this music in front of 300+ guests to show that not matter who you are, dancing and music come from the heart.

As a tango dancer from Argentina I truly adore this scene. The shyness and nerves that come with hitting the dancefloor for the very first time are perfectly captured here.
I'll leave my comments in case someone felt interested enough to go and take some classes:
    - Always, always salute and applaud the band when the song is finished if playing with live music. Takes two to tango: the couple dancing and the band playing!
    - Feel your partner. A true tango embrace doesn't look like this, it's a lot more put together. His hand should be grabbing her right under her scapulas, never on the waist, and you should never toss her around like that, your partner should always stay close, contained in the embrace, softly led around. He does this perfectly when he turns her around at the end.
    - It's ok to make figures and embellish it if you're showing off and you're the only couple on the dance floor. But if you're dancing with a lot of other couples around, keep your moves to yourselves, just one feet after the other. Stay on rythm, feel your partner: bingo! you're dancing tango.
    - Curious fact: this song is actually very very hard to dance to. Never have I haver heard it playing in social tango dances.
    Thank you Al so much.

“Por una Cabeza” is one of the most well-known “tango” music created in 1935. Carlos Gardel composed the music and Alfredo Le Pera wrote the lyrics. The title “Por una Cabeza” means “with a head (of a horse)” in Spanish. 3:00
It portrays the story of a man who lost everything after betting on a horse race, including the woman he admires. “Por una Cabeza,” i.e., “to lose by a head,” signifies the distance his horse lost in that race.

I really love this tango scene. Al Pacino is an incredible actor. Gabrielle Anwar later admitted just how lucky to have had the opportunity to have danced the tango with him in that movie. 🎉

Al's charm, is unstoppable, even when he plays a blind lieutenant
A trivia said he practiced this character with his eyes unfocused for hours a day. Eventually hard work pays off and his facial expressions seemed never out of his place for even a single second or a single frame

Pacino was far from handsome. My mum met him im person in the 90's. he's 1.70 m and pretty much nondescript. Of course he could sell his Napoleonesque attitude (typical for shorties) very convincing in Hollywood, by playing always the cheeky one who steals the limelight. In real life attitude like this is a straight "ticket" to the hospital, but hey not in the movies. that's why people love to watch them.

@@fredrickaappletree3402 Fully concur. I would say that confidence is half the battle, if not more. There are people who are experts in faking confidence. And of course thinkers have a bit of a problem in presenting themselves cocky, since they're always in doubt. It's mostly bland and ordinary people who radiate that kind of confidence -men and women - i guess it's natural and kind of their "weapon".
