Air India unveiled deals on Tuesday for a record 470 jets from Airbus and Boeing. Here are ten things to know about this mega-development in India's aviation sector. The deals include 220 planes from Boeing and 250 from Airbus and eclipse previous records for a single airline as Air India vies with domestic giant IndiGo to serve what will soon be the world's largest population. The Airbus order includes 210 A320neo narrowbody planes and 40 A350 widebody aircraft, which Air India will use to fly "ultra-long routes", Tata Chairman N Chandrasekaran said. Boeing will supply 190 737 MAX, 20 of its 787 Dreamliners, and 10 mini-jumbo 777X. Together with another 25 Airbus jets to be leased, the overall acquisition reaches 495 jets, an Airbus executive said. Chandrasekaran said Airbus and Tata were working on bigger partnerships, including an ambition "to bring in commercial aircraft manufacturing at some point in time in the future". Air India's order tops American Airlines' combined deal for 460 Airbus and Boeing planes more than a decade ago. The first aircraft to arrive will be 25 brand-new Boeing 737 MAX planes and six Airbus A350s in the second half of 2023, with deliveries really ramping up in 2025 and beyond. The deal includes a major win for engine maker CFM International, a joint venture between General Electric and France's Safran. It has been selected to power 210 Airbus narrowbody jets ahead of rival Pratt & Whitney, while bigger jets will be powered by GE or Britain's Rolls-Royce.

Fact : Air India will now be larger than Singapore airlines and Emirates combined by fleet size. 147 aircrafts of singapore airlines and 269 of emirates vs Air India (140 already in use + 470 on order + 53 from vistara + 28 from Air india express + 33 from Air Asia india = 724 aircrafts ).

@@utathyasarkar1014 even then bro. Air India will be at 724 in max 3-4 years as deliveries are starting this July 2023. Emirates might reach 400 if it really grows at a maximum pace but i don't think they can achieve such growth as their focus is in on premium products which is already reaching saturation levels.

If 450 aircrafts are being imported then balance of payment of India will be affected unless Air India is able to ferry numerous passengers from overseas destinations. With an uncertain world political condition if price of oil goes up this can jeopardise the very survival of the airline.
To be an economic success air India will need to obtain more flying rights and parking rights.
Air India has chosen to buy from 2 different vendors that means Air India will be spending a lot of money in maintaining spares and training pilots on two different aircrafts. From risk management perspective it is a good idea to spread the risk across two manufacturers.
India must insist on both manufacturers setting up some form of manufacturing base in India for sourcing few of the components that go into the manufacturing of the aircraft.
In next couple of years if the fuel scenario changes and countries refuse overflight permissions to curb greenhouse gases this can be a game changer for Air India.
Let us hope for the best and hopefully it is a win win situation for all involved.

While having the latest aircraft is vital for an airline, the big question is can AI ( excluding AI Express) be of the standard of Singapore, Cathay Pacific or even Emirates ????? It is a shame that the world's most populated nation does not even have one world class long haul airline.

Just Southwest has around 700 737 planes in the USA. This is not a big deal that would see any competitor being pushed out. I would want Air India to take slow, measured, and steady growth instead of overeating and taking on more loans and then making losses which would result in loan default and government bailouts. I hope it's careful and has good demand data to support this kind of order as the domestic market is very price volatile for a full-service airline. Jet Airways and Vistara's failure is evidence that the Indian market does not demand full-service airlines in the domestic sector instead a cheap way to get around.

Is this a purchase or lease? Was there an opportunity for imposing a condition of sale that at least 50% of components in the new aircrafts be manufactured by the Indian Aviation Industry and exported to Boeing and Airbus for final assembly. We should at least be able to manufacture all the spares required for the future maintenance of these aircrafts besides developing adequately skilled manpower for servicing aircrafts. Is there a risk that the petrol engine could become obsolete and replaced by some other form of engine(alternative fuels, fuel cell planes..) by the time second half of the order is delivered?
Apparently Airbus has their manufacturing plant in Tianjin, China. If our planes are coming from the Chinese factory, India could have as well set up an Airbus plant somewhere in India, to manufacture the planes, Of course, for our immediate needs we could get the CKD kits and assemble and progressively get into manufacturing the whole plane.

NEW: 62-year-old Boeing whistleblower John Barnett found dead in his truck after he didn't show up for a legal interview linked to a case against Boeing.
Barnett worked for Boeing for 32 years and retired in 2017. After retiring, Barnett spoke out about how Boeing was cutting corners on their airplanes.
Just days before his death, Barnett gave evidence in a lawsuit against Boeing.
Barnett accused Boeing of "deliberately fitting sub-standard parts" on their aircraft.
He also accused Boeing of having faulty oxygen systems, saying one in four breathing masks would *not* work in an emergency situation.
Barnett said new plane builds were rushed. When he brought his concerns forward, they were allegedly ignored by the company.
When he died, Barnett was in Charleston for interviews linked to a case against Boeing.
He was supposed to come back for more questioning on Saturday but did not show up. Inquiries were made to his hotel where Barnett was found dead in his car in the parking lot.
