Behind Air India's Worldwide Expansion

  • recently air India has ordered a total of 470 planes from both Boeing and airbus. this has been a really big news all over the world. but in India, nearly every airline has some planes on order. combined with 500 of indigo, 72 of akasa, and 17 of Vistara, the total number of ordered planes in India exceeds a thousand. but apart from these orders, the air india order happens to stand out the most. and this is because it is the single largest order in terms of aircraft numbers in history.
This order will likely prove to be extremely important for air India and will allow them to expand their network worldwide. the growth in coming years for Air India and overall Indian aviation will surely be historic.

Air India was also the leading airline in the 1970s. But after the government took control of Air India in 1951, the airline started falling after a few decades. Now, the Tata group has bought it and it is coming back. Even Singapore airlines used to visit Air India to know how they operate so well worldwide. Also, it was created by the Tata group and is in the hands of Tata again.

Air India doesn't need to compete with the Middle East Airlines - they need to provide reliable and convenient service from the cities of Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi etc to more destinations in North America and Europe. Its very difficult to fly to Bangalore - one of India's leading cities to most European and North American destinations without wasting hours waiting for connections.
Also, why are all the Air India flights from Delhi or Mumbai? Most passengers from and to the Southern states shouldnt have to go the long way around when airports in Hyderabad, Bangalore etc have more than enough capacity and capabilities to handle the traffic.
Finally, I dont think there is a single non-stop flight from India to any South American city, which is quite shocking for an international airline.

There is another way to think about it: Tata is doing this to capture a chunk of the international market and to prevent foreign airlines from competing in India's domestic market. So in the future when Indian Aerospace industry reaches enough technological maturity to build airliners comparable to Western ones, Tata's airlines will be a big customer and then we will get to see an even more massive order placed by Tata for Indian planes.
Things happen in steps. Rome was not built in a day.

This was long overdue. Not necessarily for Air India, but for any India based airlines. As an Indian American living in the US for two and half decades, I've always wondered why do I always have to fly with a non Indian airlines. That didn't make any sense. Air India has been flying a few routes from Chicago and New Jersey I believe to India (mostly Delhi), but that didn't help me much as I live in the west coast and I fly primarily to Mumbai or Kolkata. I had flown by Jet Airways once and had a lovely experience. Jet was one of the best airlines, not just in India but Worldwide in terms of Service. They are planning to come back and I sincerely hope it happens. That will be even better for the Indian market. Fingers crossed.....Vistara imo is currently the best airlines in India. But during my recent trip to India last month, I took four flights by four different carriers and I must say I was very impressed with the new entrant Akasa Air. Brand new fleets and good service too. Hope they too can grow and survive......

Yes most high traffic routes to Frankfurt,London, Paris,Dubai, hosting Texas, newyork Dallas,Chicago dominated by emirates and flown by Indians so having the chunk of this traffic is what india needs.and our tatas just don't care of profits.if they know they're a market they'll invest and people have faith in their products

The problem with Air India starts right from trying to book a ticket. Every facet of this Air Line is a stumbling block. Customer Service is a joke. Ground Staff are ill informed and rude. Similar issues afflict the Cabin Staff. They NEVER make eye contact with you! If you want to lodge a complaint, every body disappears. The recent incident where a man urinated on an elderly Lady during a flight beggars belief. And the fact that she was made to sit on the same soiled seat is horrific. The man responsible was let go scot-free without any charges being filed. The Toilets on Air India are filthy, no attempt is made to clean it up. As the flight progresses, some toilets are locked! The interior of the Aircrafts are shabby and unclean. Food service is mediocre at best. The Cabin Staff are not trained to properly serve a meal, even in business class. And are nowhere to be seen once the meal service is over. The Tatas now have a boil on their backside! It will be interesting to see how the Maharaja can be revived, he has been on life support for decades. The only smart thing that the BJP Government has done is to shove this problem on some body else’s head!!

I'm curious whether there has been any initiative to develop Made-in-India airplanes, given Modi's aggressive push for Made-in-India products. Are there any existing structures or incentives in place to encourage this? For instance, could negotiations involve assembling parts of the planes in India to help with skill development and technology transfer? Additionally, do you think India's aviation push, combined with efforts to integrate tourism, has the potential to divert some traffic away from the UAE and other Gulf countries as transport hubs?

Forget about Competition or brand, It didnt order any B777 or A380. Plus I feel with such a fleet, (Quantity>Quality>Maintainance and Care with a One Shot Order) Now the accidents and Crashes probability will Increase. Also considering the fact that its Air India(accidents) and mass order includes Boeing 737MAX(accidents) and A320NEO(no brand image). I think they don't give a damn about brand. As a business mindset Their Order will increase their market and profit just that it would still be hidden and infamous.

Improved and elevated online/reservation system, significantly improved customer service including upgraded airport lounges and cabin experience are key to improve its position as a leading airline in the marketplace. Even after a year of Tata take over, AI is yet to see daylight with the above noted criteria(s) which don't have to wait for new aircrafts.

Air India is a long way from "ruling" anywhere… buying more planes does not cover the extremely poor and low quality image that people associate the airline to. The livery and interior design is dated and cheap… and the seats build is terrible. Air India’s 787 is the only 787 that I didn’t like at all. The only way I can think of Air India "ruling" over international routes is if their ticket pricing is wayyyy cheaper than all other competition - because at similar pricing people would much rather buy a quality service. If Air India wants to "rule" it needs major changes - to its design, service, branding - and needs to mend the low quality reputation it has in the mind of air travellers

If you see the history TATA Group was the first Indian Airliner the started the Airlines business (It was brainchild of Naval Tata), due to some political reasons it was given to Indian Govt. which did not do well due to corrupt Administration, So Mr. Ratan made it a mark to keep up the vision and reputation high. If the Tata Sons are involved in any kind of business deals, i am 100% sure that they are committed to deliver what they have planned and Promised, with Vistara merger they would have got a significant hold in the market.

While we wish all success to the new team, we know decks are loaded against this entity that has had troubled past. Our fervent hope is that we the taxpayers are spared yet another haircut via public sector bank NPA.

Emirates and Singapore airlines is a distant dream. They should try and match the service of low xost carrier like IndiGo. I don't think even that is possible. It's because the government asked the TATAs to do so. Tatas always wanted back the air india for more than 50 years now. There's a business term "If you want to be a millionaire invest your billionaire money in airlines". So that now TATAs are taking the risk to improve the air connectivity in india. They gave the airport operations to Adani so that he can earn the risk free money. Adani business model has been as such as risk free, unlike TATAs and Ambanis they don't provide much of the job creating business. instead manages ports and airports.

There are millions of people who have sworn that they will never board an Air India plane again. Service is terrible, they bump you without any reason in order to give your seat to a Minister, the US Government fined Air Indian millions of dollars for not refunding the money for cancelled flights, the flights are delayed all the time, while the on board service is acceptable, the ticketing, the customer service, the complaint department are sub-par..bottom line, they just dont care. Many times, I had to bribe Air India personnel to have my issues resolved. Never again Air India.
