    RULES:
    The objective of the game is to win the most points and to play all of the cards in the Nerts pile. Setup. Give each player a standard 52 card deck of playing cards each with a unique design on its back. Each player shuffles their deck then flips the top 4 cards faceup in a row call their work piles. Next, each player deals 13 cards to a facedown pile called their nerts pile, which is placed to the right of their work piles. Flip the top card of the nerts pile over and place it on top of the pile. The remainder of the deck becomes is held face down in one hand as their individual stock.
    When everyone is ready someone says go. All play happens simultaneously. You are allowed to do any legal move, any number of times, so long as you only do 1 move at a time. The way you move cards is identical to solitaire. You can stacking cards in your work area in decreasing order and alternating colors. You can only move the lowest rank card in each pile. You can also flip over 3 cards from your stock and play the topmost one. For a refresher of the rules of solitaire, check out this video.
    When playing and moving cards, you may use your nerts pile as you desire. Whenever you move a card from it, flip the next card faceup. Unlike in solitaire, there is a community area in between all the players where the foundation piles play. The foundations begin with ace and go to king and any player can contribute to any pile. Once a pile reaches king, the player who played the king turns the pile face down and no more cards may be played on it.
    When someone plays all the cards in their Nerts pile they shout “Nerts!” and play ends immediately. Gather up all the cards from the center community area and sort them based on their unique backs. Each player scores 1 point for each card they have in the center. Players also lose 2 points for each card still remaining in their nerts pile. Tally up the scores then gather up the cards and play again.
    The first player to reach 150 points, wins.

    I grew up playing this game with my family, only we call it Nuts. Frustrating to get the hang of, but super fun when you get quick with it.

    I remember playing this in high school during our glee club concerts. There were about 12 to 15 people playing at once. We played while waiting our groups turn to go on stage for our concerts. If the ACE piles got too messy, so eone would yell timeout. Play stopped while the piles were straightened. It was fast and furious playing and soon much fun.

    So essentially, Nertz is multiplayer Solitaire with 4 columns instead of 7, and the aces are a community contribution.

    My family plays a variation of this game called Nutzee. The rules are the same, except there are 5 work piles and 10 cards in the “nutzee” pile. Each empty work pile must start with a king.

    There is a commercial version of this game called "Solitaire Frenzy" by jax games the rules is ultra similar except for the scoring that instead of loosing 2points/card in your "nerts" pile you only loose 1/card instead.

    We corrupted the rules to this game. Only 11 in the stack. When your score gets to 100 , you then add two more. Add two more when you get to 200. This let's beginners get a chance at winning a hand and staying competitive.
    When it is time to play a king, place it face down to finish off the stack and get a five point bonus.
    Finally, if you get a negative score it is reported with your tongue stuck out adding humility and laughter to the game!!!

    am i allowed to place a card from the individual stack onto an empty slot of the work pile?
    for example i played a card from the work pile onto the community pile which clears up an empty spot in the work pile. instead of taking a card from the nertz pile, can i place a card from the stock pile?

    • @brennasmith2879
      @brennasmith2879 Před 2 lety

      Yes, you can, however, it's not going to be beneficial to your nertz/pounce score, necessarily, unless using that card from your work pile allows you to use a card from your nertz pile.

    • @DaoNguyen-vp7ki
      @DaoNguyen-vp7ki Před 2 lety

      i believe you can, Mathew.

    • @toastedjam1470
      @toastedjam1470 Před 2 lety

      Yes but you shouldn’t because you lose score for every card in your Nertz pile at the end of the hand
      Unless if you need it to build up your Work pile to put a card from your Nertz pile into your Work pile
      Or if you need to clear a card from your work pile so you can put a card from your Nertz pile into the empty slot

    • @mariestoves7653
      @mariestoves7653 Před rokem

      Yes you can . Bur I would only do that if it allowed you to move another work pile on top. IE you have a red 10 and you just cleared a spot. But you have a black jack in your hand. Play it, move the 10 over and then pull from the NERTZ pile. It is legal in regular solitaire so we considered it legal in this as well.

  • @Mr._Chievous
    @Mr._Chievous Před rokem

    couple questions. do you HAVE to announce nertz (peanuts) when your nertz pile is gone or can you continue to play cards to the middle to score a few more points before announcing? the second question is what happens when both players cannot make anymore moves despite going through their entire deck and burying the top cards as dictated in the rules. that happens once in awhile and we just don't count that round and begin a new one. can't find any official rule to address that scenario, just various house rules

    • @dappylu
      @dappylu Před 7 měsíci

      We yell "OUT!" when 13 card pile is done. Yes you can continue to play for more points before announcing, just make sure someone else doesn't beat you to it.

    • @jdm2626
      @jdm2626 Před 3 lety +6

      It gives you more opportunities to play multiple cards in a row (allowing you to put more cards in the middle piles grants you more points). It can also help you create an open slot in the work pile to place a card from the Nertz pile.

      for me, if i play a card from my nertz pile, I can get stuck. However, if I can play a card from my work pile that helps me to stack, it makes it less likely that I'll get stuck.

    So it’s a competitive solitaire… meaning there’s more than one player, meaning it’s no longer solitary.
