  • The personal and professional relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham has been a source of drama for decades. The duo was romantically involved when they joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974, and their addition helped spawn instant commercial success.

Had it not been for all these break-ups: Stevie leaving Lindsey, Christine leaving John, and even Mick Fleetwood's own wife leaving him, I do not believe their 1977 album Rumours would have been nearly as successful, 'cause these divorces were what made the album.

Lindsey, even here in this video, says so many hurtful things about Stevie. Talking at the end of this video and hinting of Stevie's jealousy that he had married and had children and she didn't was one of the cruelest things he has said yet. Guess he would say such disgusting things about her, seeing as how HE was JEALOUS of HER solo career, and the fact that his didn't go anywhere (his first solo album not included!) And all his jealousy led up to him CHOKING her, in '87, which I find unforgivable! Just glad the other men of Fleetwood were there to handle his a** on that day! Sometimes bands get more creative out of adversity than when they get along. It's a weird dynamic but often true in the music industry. It's not only applicable to Mac but other great bands. Pete Townsend and Roger Daltry were quite often at loggerheads in the heydey of The Who. Townsend was very close to kicking Daltry out at one point. The Beatles had similar dysfunction as time went on.

I think Lindsey waited for Stevie to reconcile their tumultuous relationship, but like he said, you can’t get closure if you’re around them at all times. I think they were both hurting, but they knew that the work they produced together in Fleetwood Mac made a world of difference, even in spite of one another. It was their therapy to move on alongside one another regardless of that immense pain. It wasn’t the therapy they actually truly needed, but they prevailed otherwise, writing about each other and producing phenomenal music. Despite that, they were lovers and claim to always be in some way, even though Lindsey married and had kids. And maybe Stevie did have an internal problem with that, because like she said in one interview, their dynamic on stage was almost more romantic than what they lost. Words not verbatim, mind you, but if she felt that way and he moved on, she’s the front runner and could call the shots to remove him. But I do think that’s a foul decision, even after all he said about her jealousy toward him later finding a soul mate and having kids and she didn’t. Again, a tumultuous relationship that should’ve been handled better early on with professional help versus drug use and exposure to one another after the split on a regular basis. I just hope they both find peace for each other in the end.

During the 97’ Dance tour, there were legit rumors that Stevie and Lindsey were romantically getting involved again. It was during that time, Lindsey’s GF (now wife), notified Lindsey she was pregnant. Footage (Stevie breaking down in tears and not being able to finish songs), and fan comments regarding that tour, confirm that that news was devastating for her. The emotions on that tour were heightened for both Lindsey and Stevie, just watch videos from that tour. Lindsey didn’t marry his wife until after their second child, and Stevie stated in an interview that there was always a chance for them to get back together, until he had his first child. I think she was referring to that time. Anyone who says they are only acting, and doesn’t recognize the way they look at each other, where we can feel that connection ourselves when we see it, is crazy. They have a powerful connection. It’s a shame there was always something there pulling them apart. So I also think that Lindsey always waited for Stevie..

Why people are posting that Stevie being inducted into the Hall of Fame twice makes her better than Lindsey doesn't make sense to me. There are so many great artists not in the R&R Hall of Fame - it doesn't mean anything. I still love those artists who are my favorites that aren't in the Hall of Fame. Some artists in the Hall of Fame I don't feel should be there at all. I fell in love with Fleetwood Mac when Rumours came out. I learned who all the members were and like many fans, Stevie Nicks was my favorite. I liked Lindsey too, and Christine, but Stevie was the #1 reason I loved Fleetwood Mac. Saw them in concert a few times as well as Stevie, Lindsey, and Christine solo, and Lindsey and Christine together. After years of putting up with their childish behavior as they got older, I think they're all obnoxious and annoying to some degree. My opinion is that Stevie got Lindsey kicked out of the band going from what I believe after hearing everyone who's spoken about it. When that happened, I was so disappointed in/mad at Stevie Nicks and have not gotten back to being the fan I was when I first bought Rumours. For some reason, Lindsey thinks fans eat up the "let's pretend like we like each other when we walk out on stage hand in hand for the encore" routine. I personally do not. The music is the reason I paid money to see you in concert or bought your albums. That soap opera drama never made a FM concert better for me. When Christine died, so did Fleetwood Mac in my opinion. I don't care who they go on stage with and call themselves Fleetwood Mac. My Fleetwood Mac is Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. Rest in peace, Fleetwood Mac.

I just read an article in the NY Post that detailed Buckingham’s verbal, psychological, and physical abuse of Nicks. The band didn’t stand up for Stevie in the early days. But in 1987 when he slapped her face and bent her backwards over a car and started strangling her, Christine confronted him. He had also insulted Nicks onstage, tried to kick her, tried to trip her and never apologized. Stevie finally had enough. Lindsey’s lucky Stevie put up with his behavior for so long. Stevie had a lot of other hit solo albums without Lindsey. The same can’t be said for Lindsey. He needed her way more than she needed him. And the rest of Fleetwood Mac came to the same conclusion.

I went to a Rumors concert at 15, and I was a hardcore FM fan all the way through the Tango in the Night era. Saw them several times live and Stevie solo several times. I was also a Stevie Nicks fan when I was younger and in my mind, she was so cool, and her love life was so romantic in a dysfunctional way a teenager would find romantic. I had the Buckingham Nicks album which I found pre-internet at a Tower Records store. Now that I'm older I see Stevie's side as more dysfunctional than when I did when I was younger. Even, besides Lindsey, all her other romantic relationships never endured with in some cases other rock stars that were even more famous than Lindsey, she had more of a drug problem than the rest of the band. She implies there was physical abuse from Lindsey, but has admitted she pushed him to that point by telling him horrible things. Not saying physical abuse is okay. But you can see the part she's played in their dysfunctional relationship. No other version of the band has worked without Lindsey. Despite even people like Sheryl Crow or members from other famous bands like Tom Petty's band. I think Stevie thought she had she had to make a choice between stardom, and family life esp. in the seventies/eighties, and stardom was ultimately what she wanted. I just felt sorry for Lindsey, on his last firing, he suffered a heart attack afterward where FM released a lame general statement about his heart attack. And his family was worried he might have lost his singing voice. Now Christine is gone. I think Lindsey's contribution was his producer abilities, and FM never shined as bright without his contributions. Stevie's contributions are of course her songwriting ability and story telling abilities. One thing that came out of the 1970s was people's ability to go to therapy, but now FM is way beyond middle age, and they are still stuck in their dysfunctional ways. (PS I think Mick always sides with the money).

She said it over and over….she picked the band because it gave her notoriety as a start, that had to be maintained and then grow. Emotion wrote those songs, and without their web, there would have not been much of a Fleetwood Mac. I’m kinda thinking that when Lindsey got married and started a family, that might have made Stevie feel a certain kind of way because she can’t have him in the only way that she could have him any more, and it grew to her rage. I don’t think they will ever get over each other. Kinda sad, really.

Buckingham had a long and difficult time escaping the shadow of his romantic past with Nicks. He often referred to it as "the spectre of Stevie."
When Buckingham was fired in 2018, Fleetwood told the other band members not to have any contact with him. John McVie was the only one with the integrity to reach out to Buckingham and tell him what happened. The words from his song "Big Love" describe his former band mates perfectly:
"You said that you love me,
    And that you always will.
Oh, you begged me to keep ya,
In that house on the hill."
He made them rich and famous, but they had absolutely no loyalty to him. And in the end, they stabbed him in the back.

Exactly. So many of these commenters have no idea what went into making this band. Lindsey wrote at least 1/3 of the songs on the most successful albums, plus produced, created his iconic guitar style, sung and made the harmonies that created the sound that rocketed FM to success. SN is part of that but some have no clue what the total winning combination of talents was. Including songwriter, singer, keyboardist Christine McVie, Nicks just sang. And the biggest that is a product of both is, mutual respect. Whether you are around one another constantly or the typical after 5, if the respect level that's spawn from the 2 former isn't rained in, it ain't going to work...ever!! Until YOU (not putting it on the other person, you have to be bigger, not only for them but for yourself) decide to put aside the pettiness & find the respect you had that's when it's possible to refind the love. They owned their own business, working (5 to 6 days a week), living together, raising a family & married almost 51 years until my dad passed away. My mom still sat on my dad's lap, he lovingly teased her as she smiled and said "Oh Frank" then a giggle. They displayed true friendship, deep love, mutual respect, they were A TEAM. If anyone takes sides, they're wrong to do so, both are to blame, both contributed & blaming it on "not having distance or closure" is the way children reason not true adults. Stevie and the Wilsons (Ann and Nancy from Heart) were my heroines and role models when growing up. But I have to be honest, Stevie can be quite the hypocrite, or at least showing evident and/or selective amnesia!
She was just seen here talking about "rolling her eyes" off-stage at Lindsey's euphemistic speech when he addressed the audience, but goes off getting her knickers in a twist bc of some perceived (but woefully misinterpreted) "smirk" of his?!
Also, Lindsey wasn't just "let go" from working on the new album (which Mick practically begged him to, while Lindsey was fully engaged with work on his *own* stuff) and the tour that would follow, but it was Stevie who made Mick *fire* Lindsey, by threatening the band "It's either him or me!"...
*Edit:* Seeing as Mick was shtupping Stevie at that time, there was no real 'twisting Mick's arm' involved, oc (most likely she twisted his head, but not the one between his shoulders!).
But the nastiest thing, imo, she ever did to Lindsey was in 2019, when *she couldn't even be bothered to make a simple phone call, after Lindsey got out of (life-threatening) open heart surgery, asking how he was!*
All these things combined tell you *a lot* about a person's character...
    Edit:
If it hadn't been for Lindsey, Stevie wouldn't even *be* in the band in the 1st place, since Lindsey refused to join if he couldn't have Stevie join FM too!
He may have been guilty of many a thing, but a lack of loyalty isn't among them; Stevie could learn a thing or two from this trait.
I can forgive many mistakes and flaws in any relationship, but I make 3 exceptions to my rule:
1- Cheating, 2- Disloyalty, 3- Poor personal hygiene (don't insult my olfactory!)...

So many of these commenters are dumping on Lindsey Buckingham and making Nicks out to be an angel saint who made FM. In actuality they have no idea what went into making this band. McVie even cowrote and released an album and toured with Lindsey as a duo in 2018. So any talk of friction betweeen her and Lindsey is nonsense. I saw that tour and they were fantastic together.
Nicks stabbed Buckingham in the back and caused his heart attack. And the band betrayed him after all those years. That is proof of a terrible tendency to carry a grudge and makes her look small. It changed the way I see her.

I think there was some underlying animosity there that wasn't addressed early on. The fact that the affair between Nicks/Mick didn't break up the band was questionable. I guess the tour delayed that for a while. I can relate to Stevies and Lindsey's relationship. I was in the same kind of relationship for 30 years. So, in my personal opinion, is that ger songs reflect the story of my life as well. In her words , " You may be the one, but you'll never be the one. "

Stevie has gone from person to person & she seems angry all the time. It is hard to believe she wasn't thinking of herself when she wrote & sang all of those beautiful love songs. I think she blames Lindsey for all her mistakes & she is bitter, at least that is how she is being perceived by her own hand. I hope she finds some grace as I loved her as an artist for many years. just a shame that's all when you look at what could have been a much better and more fruitful ending for all...which Christen will never see. Stevie should apologize to Mick's family for using his lust to interfere in their family., just a shame.

Found this series of quotes from band members about the 1987 fight Stevie and Lindsey had when Buckingham said he was leaving the band.
Has Stevie ever laid hands on Lindsey? I was reading a fic (ik,ik. It's fiction blah blah, I shouldn't believe what seems to be factual in fics blah) but there was a part where it said something about Stevie hitting Lindsey in the tusk era and then he went after her, attempting to hit her but he didn't. Is this true?
This is absolutely true but not in the Tusk era. When he decided to leave the band in 1987, they were at a band meeting. According to various members, a physical fight did occur.
    Stevie, 1989
It was horrifying for both of us,” says a somber Stevie Nicks, describing her August altercation with Lindsey Buckingham, a shouting match extraordinaire. “We said too much to each other. We said all the things that we had wanted to say for the last ten years, and we screamed at each other. Those things in a relationship that you try to never say just in case you do get back together - we said those things.
    Mick Fleetwood, 1990
I looked over at Stevie, who was brushing back tears. ‘Lindsey,’ she said, ‘you’ve broken my fucking heart on this.’
‘Hey,’ he said, turning on Stevie and becoming agitated, ‘don’t do this again. Don’t start attacking me.’
‘Watch out, Lindsey,’ Stevie said. ‘There’s other people in the room beside yourself yourself.’
‘Oh shit!’ Lindsey shouted. ‘Get this bitch out of my way. And fuck the lot of you!’ A great hue and cry now ensued. Lindsey headed out to his car, and Stevie followed him outside to the courtyard, trying to change his mind. It was a terribly sad moment, because I could tell that even in her anger, a part of Stevie still loved Lindsey Buckingham and didn’t want him to leave Fleetwood Mac. She didn’t want him to go. They exchanged words in Chris’s courtyard for a few moments. I didn’t hear what he said, but Stevie cried out, ‘Hey, man, you’ll never be in love with anyone but yourself!’
Then it got physical. Lindsey grabbed Stevie and slapped her and bent her backwards over the hood of his car. Was he going to hit her again? He’d done it before. Suddenly Dennis Dunstan and Stevie’s manager, Tony Diminitriades, pulled Lindsey off her and told him that was enough. Lindsey then came back into the house, very distraught. He shouted, ‘Get that woman out of my life - that schizophrenic bitch!’
Christine sounded furious. ‘Lindsey, look at yourself, screaming like a madman.’
There was a silence. And John McVie quietly said to Lindsey Buckingham, ‘I think you’d better leave now.’
‘You’re a bunch of selfish bastards,’ Lindsey said, and walked out.
    Rock Family Trees, 1995
Stevie Nicks: Because of that guilt I’ve always had about not leaving Fleetwood Mac, I flew out of the couch and across the room to seriously attack him. And I did. I mean, I’m not real scary but I can be fairly ferocious, and I grabbed him, y'know, which almost got me killed.
John McVie: It got ugly, physically ugly *John mimes strangling someone*
Stevie Nicks: He ended up chasing me all the way out of Christine’s maze-like house and down the street and back up the street, and he threw me against the car, and I screamed horrible obscenities at him and I thought he was going to kill me. And I think he probably thought he was going to kill me too. And I said to him, if the rest of the people in the band don’t get you, my family will. My dad and my brother will kill you.
John McVie: And I said to Lindsey, ‘Why don’t you just leave?’ He left, but what I meant was why don’t you just leave the room *laughs*.
    The Daily Mail, 2013
The fracas, Fleetwood claims, culminated in Buckingham slapping her and bending her over the bonnet of a car, before storming off shouting, ‘You’re a bunch of selfish b******s.’
‘That was in the courtyard of my house,’ Christine McVie concurs. ‘There was a bit of a physical fight, and she wasn’t beating him up. It wasn’t nice.’
‘There wasn’t any physical violence,’ contends Buckingham. ‘It was an unpleasant situation that day, but you have to ask yourself the question, if someone is beating on your chest because they don’t want you to leave, isn’t that in a way kind of flattering?’

You need to do better research. They went to high school in Arizona not California, and the quote from Stevie about her working and Lindsey staying home was when they moved to SoCal and she was working as a maid for Kevin Ellis, a producer who worked notably at Sound City studios. They've both made it very clear that Stevie was the one who broke up with Lindsey. She didn't want to have kids or that kind of life, while he did. Stevie found the success she wanted in Fleetwood Mac and didn't want a family to get in the way. Lindsey wanted the family and a life with her, and assumed they could do that while being in Fleetwood Mac. You also should've mentioned that Stevie had gone into rehab for a cocaine addiction but became addicted to prescription medication her doctor put her one, which made it difficult for her for record her parts in Tango in the Night.

Didn't she first meet Buckingham in the bay area during highschool and she briefly attended San Jose State Univ.? Also, she checked herself into Betty Ford in 1986 which inspired the song "Welcome To The Room Sara" 1987. She has said that the klonopin addiction was after Betty Ford and lasted 8 yrs through "The Otherside of the Mirror" 1989 and ended during "Street Angel" 1994.

They were two sides of the same coin. They couldn’t have been individually what they became together. I so much want happiness for Stevie Nicks. Buckingham suggesting Stevie is jealous that he “found his soul mate” is being intentionally spiteful. We all know that Stevie is his soul mate, and sometimes soul mates are better for each other to be separated. But that’s what Rock and Roll songs are written about.
