That ST driver deserves a massive shout out. In the roll race you can see how ridiculous his shifting is to be able to keep up with a DSG. Anyone who’s raced against a DSG in a manual knows how every gear change can “shoot” the DSG forward. Fair play to the lad!
Big time, u need around an extra 50/60hp at the wheels to keep up with a DSG from a dig I found, And that’s nailing the shifts
flat shifting though...................... still need shift but ain't same as actually engaging the clutch with a manual shift......

@@mzk1221 yeah ofc that's why isaid its shifting and what not but it's a whole load quicker then standard stock shifting and it's much quicker in response to competing against dsg gearbox

Golf deffo jumped the last two roll faces clearly.
“If it had a DSG” the Ford has a built engine.. if the Golf had also a bottom end upgrade rebuild it would of been a different story DSG or not. The Golf is limited to torque in its tune, big props to the ford though.

Two things I took from this was that the focus was definitely the faster car as once he was in 4th gear he was either pulling back or indeed pulling ahead as third gear appeared to struggle with getting on full as quickly. And secondly the golf r driver was a little happy on the roll races and definitely left early.

Sams focus is amazing. I think a lot of us can drop our cars off to a tuner then run quarter miles in a DSG consistently. But not many of us could build a 4x4 focus like he did and run great times in a manual. I'll have the focus, lots more drama and fun in that thing 😎👍

Exactly. 2 years ago, I sold my manual evo and replaced it with mk7 golf. Sold it again after 6 weeks. While I can't deny how quick it is, it's soooo boring to drive I found my self dosing off sometimes.

As much as I love my ST's we all know the Golf R will take this one home because of the DSG gearbox. This is the race of the year for me!

I have the mk2 st2 currently sat at 350bhp and it’s amazing.. the golf sounds like it’s dying on the limited.. you can’t beat the look or sound of the 5 pot st...

Or another way to look at it - the ST was consciously handicapped. The Golf represents the most common themed gearbox sold today (Autos). Not the Golf’s fault the engineers spent a crapload of money on their DCT transmission to make it a killer.

Throw a sequential in the ST or one of those shifters that mimick a sequential but still keep the original trans and it will be a different story .

@@mattg9364 Torque is the answer, the HP dosnt change but now he have only a Peak and with a build engine he have the HP from ~5k to 6,5k rpm and that makes a Car fast.

I’m on my 3rd focus(1.6 turbo estate) so will always back the blue badge💪🏼💪🏼😍. The faster car won, but the better driver lost👏🏻👏🏻
100% accurate. Had 2 Focuses myself, 1.6 TDCi and a mk 2.5 ST-2, amazing little cars (had nearly as much fun in the diesel as I did the ST)
@@valiantdiesel1332 fair play mate. It’s my mrs daily so unfortunately the ST is a bit thirsty for commuting 🤣. I’m trading my 13 plate vw caddy in for a fiesta van this summer. Can’t wait as my caddy has cost my £3k in the last year! It’s only worth 4.5🤦♂️🤦♂️.
@@valiantdiesel1332 got an ST and a 1.8TDCI, love the old diesel and more fun trying to squeeze some power out it. But totally addicted to the noise of the ST.
@@boabm6522 The 1.8 is the only diesel made by Ford themselves, the 1.6 I used to have was a collaboration deal with PSA, which is why the reliability wasn't stellar. Those Lynx 1.8s will run and run forever, pretty strong blocks for fettling too, probably get 200hp out of her if you really wanted, why you'd do that with an ST at home is another question lmao. The Volvo 5-pot is a godsend, broke my heart to see her go, but I've bought an old man car now so I can't talk anymore
@@valiantdiesel1332 1.8 is a rattly lump gonna get her to 150bhp but may blow with any more 😀 I aim to get 200k plus miles out it (currently at 130k).

Sold my S3 .. DSG is nice however it’s hardly engaging so does take it away, only good point was the paddles in manual mode felt better (more like riding the bike going up and down the gears)👍 but moved back to manual
That's been one of the best battles yet. Both rapid cars, and really good launches compared to the STI / Evo battles. DSG is deffenetily faster, but i still prefer driving manual.
That ST/RS rates highly in my book as it’s a home build and that deserves acknowledgement

I think you should start doing a split screen versus list of the mods, power etc and perhaps a pic of the cars after you’ve said what they’ve got to have a overall summary of the cars!

Honestly, this shows how much DSG takes out of a drag race in terms of skill. However, what a great invention. That ST driver is such a good dude.

I raced a golf identical power to this one a couple years back in Mexico on my super naked road bike. They are seriously quickly - especially to about 80ish which was near identical to my bike
There is no golf 7 or 7.5 R to weight below 1500 kg , some say more like 1550kg.
Yeah I always thought 1500kg plus for stock weight.
Agree and for this video im going to get mine weighed which i expect to see it over 1500kgs!
My (94) nissan pulsar gti-r weighs 1205 kg’s with 400bhp.

The VW gearbox is the difference here. Every manual gear change in the Ford dropped the car back. Goes to show how well a modern auto box is. If the Ford got a sorted auto/dsg box it would be a complete set up. 👍

@@steeldevil98 Not sure you understand what’s been said. I said “if the Ford had a decent auto/dsg gearbox” I didn’t say it had to be a Ford gearbox. The focus he has built already has part Volvo drivetrain and there are companies that supply custom auto gearboxes for various engine set ups. 🙄
Having owned both a modified focus st and mk7 golf r I would say that even though the golf r is quick for what that focus st is I would own that car any day over the golf r.
The st looks like an absolute blast, having driven a golf r before I found it very boring, extremely consistent and felt very safe, all the time but that's what made it a boring car to drive
Predicability = consistency 🔨, this means you can drive the car faster

Launch control and dsg, with out them st got the golf r. Impressive driving from the manual st to keep up with a dsg car with a mapped box. Sick
Self-built ST on Manual shifting deserves massive respect!! But in saying that, no human alive shifts like a DSG.

everytime the st clutches, the golf R moves forward a bit, i guess one cant outshift a DSG even if you're flat shifting, but atleast the ST won the race on the rolling race, i think the 3rd and 4th roll race, the rolling launch worked against the ST, the way the first launch happened was acutally better, Sammy is one heck of a driver !!! if the ST had a Sequential box, he woulda dusted the Golf R for sure

I love the golf r as a golf gti rider but put an sequential gearbox in the ST and it would beat the golf r.. insane shifting by the ST driver.!
