Im a vauxhall man, owning both a gsi and vxr, but those mk1 focus RS's are absolute perfection, timeless design, iconic sparco seats and a fantastic powerplant, they really are something special.
Glad the GSI won though, z20 power ftw!

GSI owner here aswell, owned the car for 11 years. Z20 allday!
The RS was custom designed from the ground up. Very similar to the current GR Yaris. Colin McCrae was involved in set up and design. Only 3000 made worldwide. Vauxhall had fallen off a cliff at this point. Ten a penny GSi.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the absolute perfection that is the gear ratios on MK4 Astra's. Even the standard 1.8's could out accelerate the golf gti's of the time 👌
This! I had a mk4 2.0 SRI and my mates 1.8 used to be better off the lights
I've got a 1.8 coupe and the close ratio box is great for 0-60.
On the motorway however it gets a bit too revvy
I had a big standard mk4 1.6 16v and used to smoke plenty of boy racers.
The focus lost it's weight advantage when the driver stepped in the car😅 great cars👌

That old RS is just one of the cleanest looking 3-doors ever made.
Both cars are well preserved. But for me that astra is simply lovely 👌👌

As a Vaux guy, this was the best thing I've seen all month! 😁 Focus owner over confident and got served up a hearty portion of humble pie! 😅 Still all good fun though and two timeless classic motors! These are the best OG battles! ❤

@@scottwilson7927 is it was over 430 it would spin through 3rd. He started in 3rd and wasn't on boost. F23 boxes are notoriously long geared.
Focus may have been faster if the driver had eaten fewer pies.

I used to have a Arden Blue GSi and it was a awesome car. It used to wipe the floor with my mate's m3 and shock alot of people when they rolled up on it.

@@orbytl2799 its really not with a diff the right rubber with a good geo setup and a good driver 400bhp easy to use, look at how many big power focus's there is with a syvecs ecu or seat leons with nearly 500bhp, too many people focus on power and not being able to put it on the road or they are too heavy with the right foot

Quality line up!!! I used to have a GSi and loved how rare it was to see another, although they were released at a similar time that MK1 Focus RS was built to a much better spec from factory…
Still, the z20 is so easy to tune I still love them today.
Used to own a 300bhp mk1 focus rs back in the day number 2730, it was quick but really struggled at that power level, also being a 5 speed gearbox top end was terrible. Remember when I bought it brand new front tyres, after 1 year and 4.5k miles they were 0.6mm of tread left 😂😂😂

The RS driver gives me anxiety with those late gear changes. GSi owner knows how to get the best out of the power delivery

I don't think it's capable of beating the GSI at those powers but it could definitely have been a lot closer if the lad in the RS hadn't nudged the limiter in EVVVVVVVVERY gear 😂

Woulda been interesting if drivers swapped cars.
The RS chassis struggles with these power levels, mine was 300bhp and became a tyre shredder, Clarkson back in the day commented on how the front end would weave on stock power levels 😂 it was THE best handling hot hatch of its day however and ford lost around £4.5k on everyone that rolled of the production line, serious parts were used on every aspect, sachs clutch, garret turbo, sparco seats just endless

The z20 is a beast of an engine, had a few high power Vauxhalls but I think the owners need to prove there power figures cos that focus got owned every time. So either the focus ain’t got 425hp or the Astra has more than 450hp?? Either way mad one from them both.

Absolute madness I love old school battles like this as much as the focus lost I’ve always been a fast Ford kinda guy from the start since I grew up around my dad owning classic mk2 escorts and cosworths I would pick the focus any day

I think there was a driver factor going on , but even so i think the Astra had it on toast regardless puts its power on road well.

I love that there is attention to detail on the weight per tonne and thinking the Focus had a weight advantage, without acknowledging the weight of the drivers ;)

With 450 lb-ft, but only 425 bhp, the Focus looks like it needs a bigger turbo (more specifically, a bigger hot side), eg. a Gt3076r. Seems like the GT28 is running out of airflow at the top end. GT28s are 400bhp turbos really.
BTW love both those cars, and love the content. Respect to the owners for giving them the thrashing they deserve!

Once I happened to fall into the hole of being a Focus fanatic with me buying the Mk I because it was a cheap car and I needed a vehicle, I started researching all about the Focus. I loved it so much I bought the Mk III as well. The focus is definitely my favorite hot hatch and favorite domestic tuner overall.
I have loved this Astra GSI since day one, great design, engine and from a great time period for the hot hatch! This could push me to try find a decent one

Another nice car comparison. As a car, I like the focus a lot more, but the driver of the astra is faster in the changes and probably knows how to start it better.(it is not only the + 25 bhp the difference)

Always leaned towards Ford myself, but Vauxhall occasionally make a car I absolutely adore and the GSi is one of them. Worth a few quid now as well! ❤️👌
Good racing. The Astra GSI proves that the michelin ps4s is a reasonably cheap solution for hot hatches with no LSD. Continental Sportcontact 7 have even more grip, only on dry road surfaces. Self tested.

Wide ratios and a big turbo = insane speed. Close ratio boxes are great on circuit but really hamper a cars ability to pile on speed.
