I know that M140i isn't the sharpest and the most focused hot hatch on sale, but it's certainly the most unique. RWD, inline-6 engine, great noise and it comes with a manual gearbox. Shame that next one will be FWD...

laptimes look weak. .1 seconds faster than an old NSX around hockenheim and noone ever called a stock og NSX "rapid". 0-60 looks impressive. the bmw will always be more fun. I can't think of any audi I would like to own other than a 5/10 cyl.
@seamas cassidy have you guys been to the autobahn? it doesn't sound like it since you're calling ~350hp cars "rapid" and "very fast". a 2002 honda NSX type R can keep up with them on a track and that car was literally build around japanese poweroutput restrictions from 1989. the S3 would have been rapid in '89, the way it is it gets a decent 0-60 time and that's it. I might change my mind when I drive them but I highly doubt that. I'll take a faster used car for less money, thanks.

Test drove it a lot and went for the Golf R in the end. Both incredible cars but the looks, practicality and finish of the R had me. Plus rear wheel drive would mean for me I’d only be quick if the line 1/3 of the time! If I could have stretched to an RS3 though.. no contest!

I've got a GTI and can confirm there is a significant delay between letting off the brake and the car launching when using launch control. The GTI and the R have the same DSG transmission.
What very few people mention in the comments is how when rolling (which on the road is usually what you're doing when having a play with another car) the M140i just storms away from all the others. It's quicker by a big margin.

M140 is a rear wheel drive so take off is not simple due to struggle with traction control. It beats them in rolling because it has big engine. That B58 engine is no joke in rolling
@@jerrydino1310 the one I bought was stage 1 remapped and had crushing in gear go. It matched a 2016 BMW M5 standing quarter at Santa Pod, I had to launch it in 2nd gear because 1st just wouldn't put the power down well enough from a full bore standing start! Awesome car
Not actually true, I own a cupra 290 dsg, and I've raced a m140i and it couldn't come past me, I'd say mine was minimally quicker, but then the cupra is quicker then a golf r and s3 once rolling.
@nobody2934 no way, own a M140i...the Cupra is definitely slower when rolling. Even the new Golf 8 R can't get with it. Maybe the one you "raced" with used comfort mode, that makes it of course less faster

It is an interesting comparative test. But it compares apples with oranges. The BMW M140i XDrive with all-wheel drive is unfortunately not available in the UK. But with this advantage in traction, the test result would have been different.
That M140i was in another league accelerating from a rolling start.

you could see the gear box in both the golf and the audi weren't particularly fast which is why the bmw pulled away so fast, yet the audi did end up catching and beating the focus rs
I own the FL S3 and it easily does low 13s stock. It is just a beast at launching.

I’ve owned an M140i for about a month now, it’s a savage car and I still haven’t managed to fully push it to its limits it’s generally too quick to do that around English roads unless late at night or no cars in front, which make me wonder how M car owners get on lol... one thing that is pure class is the gear box and I think that’s what sets BMW apart from the rest, the gearboxes are so so good your going to beat most rival Audi’s and Golfs purely on kickdown, gear changes are seamless and as soon as you put your foot down it’s reeling you in. Going full hog off the mark is a gamble as the BM does wheel spin quite a bit if your tyres aren’t warm, drive ability is limited in the wet, but you can fully spank it in the dry and when you do it’s an asbo. in terms of ownership the car has so many sides to it, the fact that it’s rear wheel drive makes it a different car every time you drive it, one day you could be a straight line hero, the next your drift king, the next your opening it up on a nice B road listening to that 3 litre engine spool, which you have to remember is the only hatchback in the world to offer that combination.
I read a review of the M140i before purchasing which said “it’s a highly focused, unfocused car” and I would say that’s a spot on description. In my opinion it’s an M car under the bonnet, but it’s a 1 series everywhere else, and I think that’s what let’s the car down in terms of focus, but makes it more of a handful to drive (which is good) for example, breaks could be sharper, rigidity could be improved, that’s probably it though but you can do that yourself for 2k and that’s cheaper than an extremely ott rs3 or a45 which try too hard. Engine performance in my opinion is perfect I’ve not been tempted with a JB4 box or anything like that because I think 350hp (at dyno) is enough for this car and unless your going to upgrade the breaks, tyres, lsd etc it’s not worth doing because it will become un driveable. The car is perfect as it is and you won’t be disappointed :)
Not to say the others aren’t good but I think for an enthusiast it ticks all the boxes. Might go and drive it now actually :)
Do all M140i's have the B58 engine everyone raves about? Or were those available in the 118is etc. too?

How would you improve it? I totally agree. I put chassis bracing in the front and back, but still feel like it could be sharper. Coilovers?
@@dauwg99bilstiens, underbrace, strut brace, M4 control arms and if money isn’t a problem polybrushing but best of all LSD. These will make your car feel like a M3.
@@Adamkershaw1 Thanks so much. I did both under braces, strut bar and the PowerFlex rear subframe inserts. Also put in really light wheels, which made a huge difference. If money wasn't an issue, what you mentioned above would be amazing. However, car feels waaay better and so much more composed. I've noticed these cars respond well to very smooth inputs.

Not that numbers are always 100% representative of reality; but it appears from 0-60mph the S3 has a 0.2s advantage over the Golf R. I can't say why, but I'd imagine it's done on purpose by VW to ensure the Audi surpasses the Golf.
Along with the fact that runs off a dig are always going to have significant variations
judging by the S3 sound he has an aftermarket downpipe and/or catback, on a turbo car this is huge gains and most likely tuned alongside it. Thats why it performed like it did im sure

The A6 50 TDI is 34hp down of the 540d and 54hp down of the E400d.

The s3 has diffrent technology in the way it distributes its power. Its a lot more advanced than vw hence the launch. Rolling race there isn't to much in it as expected but of course the s3 edges it. Its a better car.. Before you golf r owners get butt hurt do your research before getting all angry. It's there in black and white

The S3 and Golf R both do 0-60 mph in 4.6s so something definitely happened to the R on that launch. The R is about 100 lighter, at least in North America.

The test car I got from bmw was a rwd and it also should be able to beat a35 on dry ground. My own xdrive would be more capable in that but will have a small weight disadvantage on rolling races.
The point is most rear wheel drive always pick fast on rolling race than all wheel drive. Personal observation tho. But in all, I'm always seduced by ///Amg, I just love Merc.
Might be coz it wasn’t in sport plus mode in the rolling race maybe.
My stock S3 does the 1/4 mile in 12.89 so it checks out

I’m so glad I bought the M140i before it changes to a 4-pot 2 litre FWD as is suggested it will do next year. The car is a joy to ride as a daily driver too. It’s a shame BMW never made the X-Drive model available in the UK like it is available in Europe, though I’ve never had ANY issues with traction on wet days. Don’t know why he didn’t put it into manual sport+ for a launch control from the start though. It’s frightening! 😁👍🏼

That A35 sounds pretty horrible for an AMG. Worse than the A45. I'd take the Golf R or the M140i. The BMW especially with the 6 cylinder is sweet!
None of them sound good at all...
A35 doesn’t actually have an AMG engine, it’s just a tuned A250 motor. Of course the A45 sounds better - it’s more expensive and has an AMG-built engine.

Xdrive would’ve won it all except brake test. But I would choose the A35 as a daily. That interior is gorgeous.
Turns out the S3 HAD been remapped after all. Subsequent drag races proved it.

S3 is remapped that's why has pops and bangs when is revving,stock s3 doesn't.
Tires play one of the biggest roles in stopping distance. So the test doesn't even matter unless everyone has the same tires with the same wear. Or I guess in the stock case. Stock tires that come from factory.
