“Je suis Malade” was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, but a few months after, Dalida covered it and brought it to fame. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends.
Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations.
This 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal) is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.

Another good reaction on Lara, thanks !
I will post a separate comment on the story of this song, an absolute classic of the french catalog.
You mentioned many of the vocal skills she used here. The one you didn’t mention and that still amazes me after 100s of times I listened to it : this invisible transition from mix chest to mix head/full head voice on the first « Je suis ». Such a control on her vocal chords !
Also this is an absolute masterclass in performing and emotions conveying: the way she makes it conversational switching from speaking to singing in the same breath, the way she surfs from one emotion to another and exposes it with her whole body, this line she rides between singing and crying, pffff! 😱
Now when it comes to Celine and Lara association, this is recurrent coming from english speaking reactors ( we, french natives don’t get this similarities at all), I know this is supposed to be a huge compliment for Lara, given how highly Celine is praised.
Personally I largely prefer Lara’s tone, especially in the upper register where her voice is warmer, rounder, more resonant and finally way more pleasant to my ears.
And I can imagine Lara singing easily any of Celine’s song but I don’t imagine Celine singing Je suis malade with the same performance and storytelling perfection.
One of my favorite reactor stated it right:
Celine and Lara bring very different emotions when singing:
    - with Celine you are part of a big show, you are impressed by something big happening and feel satisfied witnessing it
    - with Lara, this is more a one to one conversation that immediately takes place, she grabs you instantly and channel emotions directly to your soul. This is more intimate and finally more impacting.

Not only is Lara Fabian a master class singer but she is probably the best storyteller in a word painter ever. She also speaks seven language fluently. She's a better all around vocalist Celine Dion

Great reaction, thank you!! No, you were right about the pronunciation of "Je suis malade", it's just that to play with dynamics, Lara changes the vowel "e" to "a" to give more impact.

Lara’s solo rendition remains my all-time favorite.
But now I would like to introduce you and your subscribers to a 4 member male crossover harmony group callrd “ Forestella” from South Korea. When they performed their first song ( the Freddy Mercury classic“ Bohemian Rhapsody”) it catapulted them to international stardom and they now have millions of followers worldwide. They were all at one time solo performers. One has a very deep bass/baritone voice. Another, a high operatic voice, and the other two group members (who were also solo performers at one time) combine to render “je suis malade” a confluence of absolute total heart wrenching passion and performed live on stage in front of thousands of fans. I thought no one would ever come close to Lara’s soulful rendition. And no one vocalist will. But when you have 4 members and the best vocal harmony group in the world, well. ( all I can say is have your Kleenex handy).
Some of their other songs I recommend are Simon & Garfunkel classic “The Sound Of Silence”, Guardian “ Angel” that will lift your spirits and transport you to another world-especially during these troubled covid times.
And the hauntingly beautiful “ hijo de la luna”
But “ Le Suis” remains my all time favorite. I’ve watched it 5 times and each and every time it moves me to my depths.
    All love
    Al

There is a massive problem between Fabian and Dion fans. Both were in Canada and going into the USA market. Dion's people, including her husband, worked very hard to keep Lara out.
There are many issues between the 3 north American countries (Mexico, Canada and the USA) on artist access in both music and film. Fans do all kinds of wild things to get access. I get some from Australia for example.

"Malade" is pronounced "malad" when you talk in a normal way in French (like you would say "salad"). The accentuation on the last vowel is a consequence of signing it, it's not how you would pronounce it in a casual conversation.
