EE in the UK seem to have simply rebranded their 4G+ connection to â5Gâ. At least thatâs what it feels like in my area. I used to actually get faster speeds back in 2020 over their 4G+ connection then I do now in 2022 using â5Gâ.
ive noticed a drop in speeds on 4G speeds over the year tbh. They was fast and fine but now the upload is like.. gone way down... shame really
this is shameful if true
Must be your area. Iâm on EE and my 5G speeds are around 500/600 mbps
Totally agree. EE don't even reply to my complaints any more.
I can get 0.1mb on 5G. Even chrome just times out. It's shocking.
This is something called ULI 5G. This is where the site is configured to be capable of aggregating its 4G connection with a 5G connection on the site or another nearby.
Devices are designed to show 5G even when you're not actually connected to it because the network is expected to accurately tell your device this "ULI" value, and hence devices assume there is a 5G signal nearby.
Hi Arun, I am a little bit confused. I used to be an integration field engineer for the cell towers in Bulgaria and while I have worked we had true 5G network, but the interesting part is that our network use the centimeters wave instead of the mmWaves. The frequency spectrum that is used is between the 3.1-4.6 Ghz which is related to the cm waves (super high 3Ghz - 30Ghz) instead of mm waves, and also the speed is from 800mbits up to 1.5 gigabits, that is the intriguing part of the whole scenario. Maybe there is a different standard for each country to be used.
A bit late, but there are different types of 5G. Some use different wavelenghts for a slower speed while gaining extra range. In some areas its better for example if you cut down the speed 50 % but for that you have double or more range with just one 5g tower. Especially for rural areas.
True mm wave is pointless for most things. You get faster speeds, sure, but the speeds you can get at a lower frequency are still more than your typical person will ever use.
â@@jacobnunya808I find it's not so much the bandwidth allowance that 5GHz provides but more the reliability as it doesn't suffer from interference. This is especially true for when people use data, on local Wi-fi connections to there modem. 5GHz all the way for me đ

The marketing of 5G went over board yes but that doesnt mean Sub6 GHz is as slow as 4G. Infact it is bare minimum 5 times faster, half the latency and has the capacity to be upto 20 times faster than 4G provided the mobile phones can handle the computation required. Millimeter wave was deisgned for industrial applications and mobile users probably wont get it much or they will get it in specific places like stadiums etc.

@@lakshmanb5604 I guess âWhy 5G sucks for 99% of the populationâ was too long of a title
Every engineer knew that there is no way to eliminate delay over a network with physical distance involved. What the vendors and carriers were really talking about is distributing the server services nearer to the clients phones to reduce latency. Yes they definitely mislead everyone except those who understand physics. And the mmwave issues with range are also something that we cant fix yet (laws of physics apply again) so expect that to be very slowly implemented due to the extreme cost involved.
This is what happens when marketing takes over the engineering department.
Exactly to the point , congrats! I wish more professional journalists where this open thinking and honest for the industry they âlive fromâ
Arun's take on things required for future networks is spot on - more coverage, better reliability, and 'good enough' speeds (like good 4g speed)

Thank you for posting this vid. I've lately been pretty frustrated with my cell provider that I contemplated switching carriers. Before I did that, I started to do some research into 5G and found what you had explained about it bundling all of the other network speeds into one. I was pretty frustrated with this to be honest and 5G is forever ruined for me. My only concern is that I've noticed 4G LTE goes much slower than it previously did. But now I'm not actually sure if I'm getting LTE or just regular 4G or even 3G. I miss the days of when if I had the LTE symbol, it meant I was going to actually have a good, solid connection.
you cannot have 4G without LTE, because LTE is the technology 4G is based on. you can however, have LTE, without it being 4G, So called 3G LTE, if you should describe it correctly, which nobody does, because bad marketing, it's also known as 3.9G because it was the last 3G technology, before it became 4G, it was based on the ideas and technologies in development for 4G, and serve as a middle link between the 2 technologies, however, it doesn't fulfill the requirements sat for 4G by the 3GPP association. therefore, it was technically illegal to call it 4G, and therefore, they often just call it LTE, for marketing purposes, to make it sound like it's 4G.
"if I'm getting LTE or just regular 4G"
Same thing. LTE (Long Term Evolution) was a term used when 4G was first being rolled out and not fully implemented. Some people took LTE to mean 4G Lite. :-)

I mean... It's really easy to do so.
As one of 5g engineers, I need to clarify a few steps:
5g never was only mmWaves, it was marketed through mmWaves due to more obvious difference.
In Europe mmWaves weren't given to mobile operators yet, thus 5g sign in UK means 3.5 GHz = sub 6 GHz (still different frequency to 4G).
5g is really not finalised yet, thus taking 5g contract you become more a beta tester than a luxurious user. It will receive updates each year, so stay tuned.
Do not expect 5g to be a game changer outside of cities, it will require a lot of antennas to be available there (no financial sense).
The demand on data rises every year, so the fact that during transition period users would not receive problems would be fantastic. Without 5g, 4g would be not able to hand a load in a few years.
Does 5G actually have really rubbish range ?
@@edwardfletcher7790 only mm waves have a rubbish range, sub 6 has the same range as 4g
@@edwardfletcher7790 line of sight it's quite acceptable. good example is maybe you walking down the sidewalk. you're going to be moving slowly and (hopefully) have clear line to the tower. great in that situation, but as mentioned in the video as soon as it has to pass through something it takes a huge performance hit (if you can even hold a connection...)

@@edwardfletcher7790 I'm not a scientist but I would assume so because as you contract something (making the waves smaller and more frequent), this would result in a decrease in range - assuming the same power usage. @52 seconds

I completely agree. When 5G pops up on my phone, the vast majority of the time, it's super slow and doesn't work. It seems that switching between 5G and 4G is pretty haphazard as well and causes a lot of disruption. Definitely considering turning 5G off on my Samsung Galaxy S21.
Got an S22, never turned on 5G, as I think it also consumes more power and brings no advantages on my handheld device. Downloads with 4g are just fine, I don't really need Gigabyte files in a few seconds on a phone, in fact my data plan is only about 5 GB anyway.
I turned off 5g and now much more reliable speed. Disappointing.
One funny thing I very quickly found out about 5G was when I was standing in open are with coverage, if I faced direction of the tower, I got full signal and speed, but if I turned 180 degrees, signal would immediately drop due to my body being in between and connection would get less reliable at slower speeds. Like it had hard time penetrating my body or getting around it. Only reason why I got it in my subscription now is because it eventually got included "without extra charge", probably used for mobile service providers favorite thing, rising subscription few months latter. Since they always do this, first add to the subscription plan, wait for 3-6 months then rise the price and say how it is market conditions and them offering more and more... without answering question about who asked for more in the first place. :-D Then some people think they are smart ans change providers, since not all of them do it at the same time, but within 2-4 months latter, they all hiked their prices. Some just delay it to get people to come over, but each time they take turns. And that is lovely world of local service providers. Anyway, generally, it is just early days of 5G and it has slow deployment, plus with making things messier with whole different bands, some slower for range, others faster for few locations, they tend to also oversell whole coverage, since you see slow wavelength coverage on their maps, not fast one. Though I will admit, having phone to auto switch between everything kind of works fine for me, usually when it gets too bad it will switch to 4G. I only had to manually switch back when it was first deployed, since phone would want to stay on 5G and that made experience so much worse. But dunno if it is improvements from service providers, updates to phone or both, something made it better.
I literally never really cared about 5G, because I almost always get awesome 4G speeds and almost never have any buffering or lag when using CZcams, Netflix and other streaming services. I've ran speed tests back to back and 4G was the same as 5G. The biggest issue with 5G is reliability and network switching. It's so annoying to constantly drop calls while I'm driving down the road when the phone is switching between 4g and 5g. I've disabled 5G on my phone
Exactly my thoughts. Shorter wavelengh = shorter range = easy absorbation = unreliable
"Shorter wavelengh = shorter range = easy absorbation = unreliable"
Yep, and that's why the Voyagers probes are able to communicate from beyond the edge of the solar system on 2.3 & 8.4 GHz!
You have that only partially right. For a given power level, the higher frequency will have a shorter range. However, antenna gain is easier to obtain at higher frequencies, so that more or less cancels out the absorption loss. The antennas can also be more directional, eliminating a lot of interference. Then there's MIMO and beam stearing, etc..

My hometown still only has 4G, but even the current 4G towers can't handle the amount of users we have without experiencing major drops in speed during the daytime.
For the longest time I've been thinking that they have to improve the capacity on the current 4G towers before even considering updating the infrastructure to support 5G.
That's a density problem, I read somewhere that 4G has connection limits.
I remember 5G coming out when I was working at Best Buy.. I never had high hopes for it. The range alone was enough for me to call this a dud. The amount of towers you have to set up and the unreliability of the signal is a recipe for disaster. A couple of weeks ago I went to the mainland and noticed my phone switched to 5G, while on the highway quite a bit far away from any city. I saw this as strange - in my head 5G was a predominantly urban thing and wasn't even capable of replacing 4G on a wide area. The other thing I noticed is that each time my phone switched to 5G it basically lost service (as in connected to the tower but the data rate was too slow to actually use, compared to 4G which was fine) .. thanks for a very informative video.
Iâve had the same experience inside a building i had 0,5mbps on 5G and 40mbps on 4G. (Outside the building 5G was fast at almost 800mbps, but very locally, 100meters away there was no 5G coverage)

I rarely get a 5g signal, and I can accurately predict when my 4g signal is lost. I'd prefer range over speed.
@David R then what's next if not 5g from here? Better processor and chip tech? Is telecomm even gonna have a leap soon in terms of speed or was 5g it and we have to wait 50 years until quantum gigahertz is a thing or something? QG?
Few points here. Every G standard contains 2 planes, user plane and traffic plane. The first one is related to the data you receive and the second one is how the mobile phone is being controlled in a network. 5G is in essence backward compatible and your phone may show the 5G logo if the phone is controlled by the 5G traffic plane but may utilize the very old 2G/3G frequencies. That is totally OK. And I think this was the thinking strategy of the operators and NW manufacturers. The 4G revenues were stagnating and they needed a new umpf but didn't know how to achieve it. mmWave is very long ahead, no one wants to install a transceiver every few 100 meters, no operator can recover from that. So, the operators instead tricked you to believe that 5G is usable for you, which it isn't at the moment and won't be in 2-3 years. However, I would still go and buy a 5G phone because those chipsets are produced with more advanced technology (10-12nm vs. 5nm), meaning they have more performance and they last longer on battery power.
So who's your carrier? I've never had problem with high speeds over 5G on my iPhone 12 on the T-Mobile US network.

So far I'm very satisfied with the 5G that I use at home (I live in Finland). I live in an area with multiple apartment buildings, so there must be a lot of other users in the area. I have a 1000M deal (45 Euros per month, unlimited data) and in the beginning I was getting maximum of 300M download, however one day it just exploded and now I am getting most of the time very close or even over the maximum promised speed. It is actually hard to reach the bandwidth limit even if I try. Only once, one day it was slow (around 200M), the rest of the time very good speeds near or over 1000M. I am fully trying to use the bandwidth as much as possible. According to the operator, my account is clocking around 17-20TB download traffic every month and no one has complained yet. đ
Oh damn, here in Germany we pay 50⏠for not even 100 download...

I disagree. I was one of the very first to get 4G when it came out, when hardly anyone used it, speed was amazing! Did the same with 5G, but as soon as its adopted by the masses and that initial honeymoon period is over, you really notice it. Nowadays if it didn't tell me if I was on 4G or 5G, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference as they both behave the same.
@@IFlipRizla no 5G is a scam
great video and seems very informative and balanced. just one question which has annoyed me, why is it that the UK also has very bad (and expensive) broadband speed to the home and is this related to its 5G/4G stability issues?
8:50 I clearly remember that guy on tv ads, asking "Kann man mit 384 Sachen unterwegs sein?" -> "can you be on the move doing 384?" (meaning 384 kbps) when Hutchison 3G/"Drei" -> "Three" was announced in Austria's mobile network landscape. That's 3G / UMTS. "Your" 7 Mbps is the limit on Dual HS(D)PA aka 3.5G, which arrived a few years later. I still remember my first "pocket modem" - a USB modem into which to insert a SIM card. That thing did 3.6Mbps downstream "Single HSPA". Don't remember whether it was by ZTE or HUAWEI, but things evolved, and I had "Dual HSPA" for a long while until LTE started appearing. *My* first LTE-capable device (up to 100 Mbps down/50Mbps up) was a SAMSUNG Galaxy S4, and I had to get a new SIM card in the "micro" form factor. {Nostalgia kicks in}
This makes a lot of sense! I had noticed my iphone 12 not being able to handle any data or connection at all on 5g, especially in cars. I found LTE worked way better to the point that I have set my phone to LTE only because it is just so useless on 5g

This right here is the video I can send to people instead of having to constantly explain myself. My SIM provider, my friends, my family, my colleagues... people trying to hype me up. I've told them before and now I get to say "I told you so". I bought an iPhone 12 Pro in 2020 and I've never used whatever 5G tech it has. I consume HD content. I remotely access my work station. Never used 5G. I will take a slower, but more stable connection any day and that's exactly what 4G is. The increased price and the drain on battery life are just a nice bonus argument against 5G, but I would have advocated it still, if only it was stable.

I used to live in a really densely populated city in the US, and Verizon's 5g was actually significantly slower than the old 4G tech, even during off-peak traffic hours, at it's best their 5G was like 40% slower than 4G. During peak traffic hours it was something like 60% slower. Came to the same conclusion that it wasn't true mm-wave 5G, but rather the sub-6GHz, which suffers far more from network congestion than 4G does. T-Mobile's 5G UC has been pretty good where I live (Akron, OH area), and my speeds and reliability has been surprisingly good. I typically get anywhere between 500-700mbps in most places and the connection always seems strong.
Also, when I upgraded from a 4G phone to a 5G phone (Galaxy S10 to Galaxy S20+), I didn't have to change any contracts/plan as T-Mobile doesn't have separate plans specifically for 4G or 5G.
I understand it will be different for everyone based on where you live and what service provider you have, but I just wanted to give my experience with 5G so far.
T-Mobile is greatly leading in midband 5G.
â@@dano612sbecause mid band is actually more practical
Something must have changed because now that I want the S23, they're making me upgrade to a 5G plan at of course more cost.
When you mentioned doing a speed test to check 5g speeds I went ahead and checked mine given my phone says I have 5g at home all the time. I'm one of the lucky ones to have good 5g I guess cause it came up as a 140Mbps connection. My wifi is still better (about 380Mbps on the phone, 800ish on PC) but it's nice to know my 5g isn't a waste.

-I have noticed that NR SA signals are slower and less responsive/reliable than the NR NSA, and the "RF band selection" MDC only has 2 mmW bands available (T-Mobile, S21 FE). Both of which are NSA signals and they do in fact. . . Kinda suck.

The thing you missed here is that there isn't just ONE type of 5g, there's 3 major types. The most hype one is obviously mmWave but there is also mid band and low band. Low band basically just allows them to get rid of the old 2g infrastructure and midband is basically just 4g but slightly better

I have never felt the need for more speed on my phone, but have always wanted more reliable connections.
in Australia broadband internet is around 100mbs for "high speed" home connections, which is stated he as the 4G speed, if we can't get 5G speeds in a cable based network how do they expect they get it over mobile?
Ouch! My cable connection is supposed to be 1.5 Gb down, but I'm limited to 1 Gb by my hardware.
You have to have in mind that technology evolution process is really quick.
In the second part of this decade, we are going to be a lot more involve with cloud computer, XR and critical IoT, besides, global traffic itself increase a lot per year.
Besides all of that 5G is a lot more efficient in term of energy in the network so it is an interesting technology for mobile operators.
You can say that LTE advanced pro can solve a lot of those problems but 5G is better than LTE Advanced pro (4.9 G) with the use of Massive MIMO and MU-MIMO, but LTE Advanced pro is almost a 5G technology.
The one use case were 5G mmWave really makes sense is in large venues, arenas and stadiums. If you live in a city and frequently go to sporting events as many people do this is a huge benefit. The transmitters can be positioned in a way to avoid obstruction. This is made trivial by the configuration of most arenas where the line of sight is of crucial importance. iâm sure that many of us have experienced extremely slow or essentially useless connections when attending a big event not only with this, improve the experience for the people in the arena, but will also improve the experience for people surrounding the arena in the already dense parts of the city, where the old 4G towers would be overwhelmed, stealing, bandwidth from even those outside.
Why would people even go to a big sporting etc. event in order to be on their phones?
â@@jb888888888Very good point there. Why the hell would anyone feel the need to stream high bandwidth content at a football game? Just doesn't make any real world sense.

One of the biggest problems is also that most ISPs dont use real 5G at the moment. They use 5G NonStandAlone, where the signaling is done via 4G and only pure Data is send via 5G.
Probably the most useful video yet, and thank you for clarifying the points.
I often thought of acquiring a 5G device but given where I live (Jordan) and the fact that 5G is not likely to come any time soon (nor provide any appreciable speed over 4G) makes one reconsider their decisions on what phone to upgrade to.
My name, do it...
This video is long overdue, been very happy on 4G for a long time, works great indoors as well, but I have noticed in my city the 5G coverage is tiny, tiny little circles around transmitters. On my 5G phone I have to force 4G as 5G is less stable and slower due to weak signal.
