As always a great and most informative video. The 5100 line up looks like a good overall group set on a friendly budget good to know 😊
About the lack of ridges on the 11-speed trigger. I recommend chopping down a rubber brake-lever cover and sliding the end onto the thumb lever (the one that tales you up the block and into the bigger cogs).
The rubber covers only cost a couple of bucks, but they make the lever more comfy and way less slippery when the weather gets hot or wet.
Cheers
Excellent. I converted my old hardtail to 1 x 11 using some of your advice but used the older SLX shifter as similar price as you mentioned its the same pull ratio. Difficult finding info on these things so your vids are very helpful. Thanks
@@LoveMTB Will the M6100 rear derailleur work with an 11 speed 11-46 cassette? If so, how would I adjust the B-screw? Do I have to set the 46T on the line on the cage as well or use the 46mm method of spacing the distance of the largest cog to the center of the guide pulley bolt?
@neilgoth1974 it will work, just adjust as normal.
@@mjojrjr6231 thanks!
Great video. Three of my bikes are outfitted with M5100 11-51 cassettes + M5100 derailleurs + M8000R XT shifters. Rock solid reliability and performance.
Yeah great bang for the buck for sure. Too bad Shimano will phase them out in the future 😩

good vid cheers nice to know there's many options for cheaper 12 speed mechs now
Thanks for yhe verty informative videos!
I got the Garbaruk cage for my 11spd XT derailleur with the oversized pulley’s and run a SunRace 11-51 cassette and it works beautifully. Looks great as well. Super happy to extend the life of my XT drivetrain. It’s also quite a bit lighter than the 5100 derailleur.
I did the same and added a Goatlink.
I found I stuck on the Miles Wide grip stickers on my 5100 shifter. Gives it a great feel and easy to add.
Some serious research here! Great job.
Excellent video. Good info.
I’ve tried a 10sp Saint shifter with a 12sp M7100 Derailleur and a 10sp Deore 11-48 cassette and 10sp XTR or 10/11sp LG500 chain. It was finicky to dial in the b-tension, but once I did, it’s shifted flawlessly for the last 4 months of daily. The Saint shifter feels really nice, very similar to the 11sp XT shifter, but with lighter action.
On my other bike, I have a full 11sp XT drivetrain with a OneUp 50t upgrade to the cassette and derailleur cage. The cassette has been through 3 new chains, and I just replaced the 11t and13t worn cogs, but everything else still shifts sweet. However, it looks like they don’t make the 50t anymore, so I’ll be trying out the 11sp M5100 cassette when this one finally wears out.
Thanks for the infomative videos Love MTB.
I have ordered this for my son's Norco fluid fs3 that has a badly worn SX drivetrain including the Truvative power spline. This drivetrain with the Shimano deore crank and BB52 should be a great improvement and the price is reasonable compared to replacing Sram components.
thanks very clear
I appreciate the video, knowing a 5100 and 6100 derailleur are identical lets me frankenstein a groupset with a rd-m6100 and 11-50 10 speed cassette I have laying around!
I have M6100 with a Sunrace 12 Speed 11-51T cassette for the HG freehub. Works really good as well and is good value I think.
Current setup on my custom bike include: Chainring Stone 104 BCD Oval 44T, Shifter Shimano SL-M5100 Deore 11S, Rear Derailleur Shimano RD-M5100 Deore SGS 11S, Bottom Bracket Shimano SM-BB52 Hollowtech II, Cranks Shimano Zee FC-M645 ZEE 170MM, Chain KMC X11SL 11-speed Chain titanium nitride gold with 118 links, Cassette Shimano CS-M5100-11 Deore 11 11-51T

STUNNING amount of info - good good good. I need to get one of these derailleurs on my old direct mount - I can weld - I'm not clear on that yet. Regards.
Glad it was helpful!👍🏻
Current setup: M6100 derailleur + M8100 shifter + ZTTO ULT 11s 11-50 cassette (360 grams).
Works okayish but that's more to blame on gunked-up cable and not indexing issues.
I've bought the RD-M5100 new as a back-up as it was total bargain at $30
Well I have M5100 groupset on my bike and I actually done what you mentioned, so my setup goes like this:
Crankset: M5100 with AB oval 34t
Chain: Shimano CN-HG601 126L shortened to 120L
Cassette: M5100 11-51
Rear mech: M5100
Shifter: XT M8000 11sp I Spec II
Brake levers: XT M8000
By the way I upgraded my M6000 brake calipers with M8100 calipers with their hoses.
So it’s all black now to fit bike color.
It really shifts fine, drives fine and brakes perfectly.
Thank you for your honor reviews and really really good advices and tips, you are really good parson!
@@LoveMTB Update, I got new rear mech it's Deore XT M8100, I also got new shifter cable housings and cables. That's XTR set in which I got that litlle thingy you have in video and the cables are polymer coated. I put it on the bike two days ago and it shifts perfectly and I noticed I have to use way less pressure on the shifter lever than before.
Next upgrade, cranks and chainring, but it will wait a bit.
@@LoveMTB today I made first ride, temperature was around 8-9 degrees celsious and I had to try how it shifts. I made about 13 kilometers around the town. XTR shifter cable and housing are some really really worth thing to consider, the thingy too. Force needed to shift to lower gear is at least reduced by 40-50% really nice and its same to multiple shifts. Chain also sounds much quieter I bet it’s because M8100 mech has bearings in jockey wheels.
I am really happy with the result
Thank you for the video, I wondered what the difference was, to me it looked identical, so it did not make sense to have two series of same thing.
But I suspected it was, thx for confirming this.
You're welcome!
Great video! Thank you. I'd like to know if I can mix m6100 chain with m5100 cassette and m8100 crankset (with m8100 chainring). Because my wheelset doesn't have the Micro Spline freehub. So before I upgrade my wheelsets, I need to stick to 11s a bit longer. 😪
Have you seen an issue with 12 speed Shimano where the chain jumps the upper jockey wheel while riding & wedges between the jockey & the cage? I've had it occur on 2 different bikes; one bike 2 different derailleurs, with everything tuned right. Seen it on 2 buddies bikes as well & quite a few online threads
Interesting like all your videos. Have you ever try using M5100 Derraileur with M6100 12 Speed Cassette, Chain and Shifter? Is it possible? I Couldn't find documents and tech info about that. Thanks.
Great videos , On my new hardtail I'm running Sram GX 11 speed 11-42. Could I run this cassette or would I need to up grade the derailleur ? if so how about a Sram Eagle GX 12 speed derailleur with the 11 speed shifter ? or best just to upgrade oneday everything to a 12 speed ? Any thoughts would be apricated Thank You
I ordered a derailleur m5100, and I received a m6100. At first view, not compatible with my SLX M7000 11-speed cassette and shift ... but based on your video, it seems I can keep it 👍🏻
No problem, enjoy!🙂
Would you be able to check if the M5100 RD will work with a 10sp shifter?
Where is your bicycle repair shop?
I need to hire you to modify my bicycle's drive chain.
Your knowledge and competence is remarkable Sir.
I like my 5100. I did miss the rear 10 tooth cog for on road/downhills, but just upgraded to 34T absolute black chain ring to see if get best of both worlds, with a bit higher speed on the flat while not losing climbing ability. will see how goes.
@@LoveMTB I think it will be. That seems to be the main difference between the 5100 and 6100, an 11T instead of 10t on the rear and I did notice upgrading from my 2x setup to 1X (2x11tooth-top gear 3.27 with 536% range to 1x 32t front 2.90@ 463%) so the 34t front should bring it up to 3.09 and I can pedal a bit quicker without my legs flying off :)
If anyone is wondering if you can use the 5100 with less range, you can. I'm running the m5100 as a 7 speed on my freeride bike. As long as you have the correct shifter the throw is identical to older model shimano even tho it has the plastic stopper on the mounting bolt
Hi! May I just ask what shifter you’re using with that? I’m assuming sram? Because shimano 7 soeeds dont work on it iirc
@@annoyingoranger100 Shimano Altus m315 rapid fire
Will the M5100 Derailleur directly replace an XT M8000 GS without any adapter/hanger changes? I'm puzzled by the whole Shimano Direct Mount/Conventional mount thing (I'm fitting the M5100 Cassette).
I'm wondering if the M5100 Derailleur will work well with the 11s XD driver cassette ?
Right, so:
M6100 - 12 speed only
M5100 - 11 speed but for the big 51T casettes only (?)
M5120 - Only 2x11 (?)
M4100 - 10 or 11 speed older stuff.
So bottom line - if I want to upgrade my RD what will fit please on my 1x11. Sram 1130 11-42t casette + xtr M9000 shifter. Thank you.
Is it possible to add a B-link to the stock M5100 derailleur so that it will be compatible with a standard hanger? I get it from your other video that you can take out the B-link of those derailleurs to go from standard to direct mount hangers, but this is the reverse. I wonder if what I'm asking is in fact the M5120 derailleur, but the groupset comes with the M5100.
Would love to see a application/value/performance comparison between DEORE 5100 and SRAM SX/NX since they are all adaptable to the HG freehubs for those considering an upgrade to mid tier MTB frames that may have come with entry level 2x or 3x drivetrains. (Eg. Giant Talons or Trek Marlin ect.)
I upgraded my giant talon to a full shimano 12 speed drivetrain but used a sram nx cassette since it’s compatible with the stock hg hub. It works perfectly and shifts smoothly
@@jdal3611 did you buy a new rear wheel? I am considering doing the same with the 5100 and Talon 4. Sorry, I don't understand HG hub. As far as I know, the Talon 4 has a freewheel hub. Is that wrong? @LoveMTB if I use the 5100RD with a 12speed cassette will it work or will the Shimano chain have meshing problems with the guide and tension pulleys?
Is it possible to have a 2x11 setup using this m5100 derailuer with 11 51 cassette connected to a m5100 2x crankset?

Hey thanks for the interesting video! I currently have a Specialized Carve (2013) that I'd like to upgrade with this 1x11 m5100 rear derailleur and groupset (10-51). Loving the bl-m4100 levers after deore leak. Love the feel, love the seal. (additional seal behind piston keeps grit away, only possible without servo wave)
Thanks for the videos very informative, definitely convinced have to upgrade the drivetrain of my entry level Giant Talon2, 11x2 casette and 36-22 crankset to the Deore 5100 group. My real issue is want to go to 1 x 36T crankset but this configuration is not in Shimano line up of FC-M5100-1, any suggestion ???
Thanks for the reply but kind of confused ... are not M6100 & M7100 series exclusively for 12 speed drive trains??
Just get a narrow-wide chainring for your current crank, bolt it on, and you now have 1x.
Danke Bruder 🚲
Hey bud. Really appreciate the video. I had just ordered the MicroSHIFT AdventX 10 speed group in conjunction with a m5100 Deore front crank. Then I saw this vid and started wondering if the entire 5100 groupset might be a better solution. This would be going on a 2023 Specialized Rockhopper. Wanted to ask if this fits any standard HG hub or if it requires special spacing in the rear of the frame or anything like that. I’m kinda new to selecting upgrades for this base model bike and don’t wanna get excited about something that won’t fit.
Standard HG is fine
@@LoveMTB So will the spacers on the m5100 crank be required to use the whole group on a standard non boost frame? I want this to be fairly easy and straightforward and am hoping the entire group can just be bolted on in place of the cheaper microSHIFT 8x2 that came with the bike. Any insight?
is the m5100 derailleur compatible with deore m6100 cassette(10 51) ??

Thanks. So the jockey wheels are identical with same tooth profile and both compatible with Shimano 12 or 11 speed chain unlike the chainring and cassette? I'm running m5100 drivetrain.
@@LoveMTB Great. The only reason I ask is because Shimano lists two different part numbers for the M5100 or M6100 jockey wheels and they are different in appearance (spoke pattern). WP-Y3FY98010 is listed for M7100/M7120/M6100 and WP-Y3HL98010 is listed for M5100. Do you know if M8100 jockey wheels WP-Y3FW98010 is compatible with m5100? Will the Saint 10 speed shifter work with the m5120 ten speen derailleur?

I have the 5100. About 6 months ago the chain started jumping over the teeth (ghost shifting?) under load. Indexing was perfect. I couldn't figure it out so I replaced the 5100 with a new one, and the new one worked perfectly. Now 6 months later it has started doing it again on the smaller gears, getting worse daily. I replaced the chain and the cassette, but it's still doing it. I'm thinking this derailleur is crap. I didn't have this problem on any of my previous bikes.
@@LoveMTB I'm looking at the Shimano manual to make sure I get the chain length and cable tension right... I'll check the hanger after that, but it seems more like a gradual problem that got worse over time. It took about 4 weeks of almost daily riding before it got so bad that I could not use the smallest 3 cogs. At first it only happened on the smallest one.
@@LoveMTB it turns out it was probably my fault.. I cut another chain to length based on the Shimano manual and then set the high limit a bit past the smallest cog, then adjusted the cable tension perfectly over the same cog and now it's not ghost shifting anymore. I was so confused how it could index perfectly but still ghost shifting under load - I guess cable tension and/or chain length fixed it

M5100 cassete sucks. It has many isues with loose rivets. Cassete make horrible noise and shifting dont work.
I have not had problems with the riverts but the aluminium spider for the gears 1-5 was way too loose on the freewheel body splines. The shift from 6th to 5th was thus bad as those sprockers were not aligned as designed.
