Really like the detail you go into-its been very helpful with my builds. I have a FS with the 12 speed hyperglide + and I just recently built up my old hardtail with the 5100 drivetrain and 10-51 cassette. Took a bit of setting up the 11s derailleur but only difference I notice compared to 12s is the gear ratios being slightly different and the gear shifting on 12s being smoother especially down gears.

I had a 1X 28T Chainring with an 11-36 cassette. I planned to upgrade to 11-speed when it broke or wore out, but that never happened before I sold the bike. Now with the newer Shimano 12-speed here in the midwest, it is a bit of overkill with our lack of severe elevation, but the range is impressive.

I chose 11 speed for budget reasons and amazingly, I managed to find all the pieces from multiple shops. I watched a youtube video by Sickbiker and he convinced me :) It's also strange that microspline wheels seems to be cheaper/go on special more than std HG wheels. I also based my upgrades on your Marlin video too.

Use to run OneUp 50T conversion with the older 11-46 T cassette, with the older 11 sp derailleur and shifter and it worked fine. The same was true for a Sunrace 11 -50 11sp cassette, thus it would likely work ok with the the Shimano 11- 51 T 11sp as well, but the industry is driving consumerism. It would be a worth while test to see if it work if you have older derailleur lying about and if so how it differs with shifting quality from the new offering.

Hi, nice review again. When it comes to compatibility between older 11s RDs and this cassette, I can tell that this cassette is absolutely compatible with XT RD M8000 SGS. I have 1x11 setup on my old genius with XT M8000 SGS and M5100 11-51 cassette and it works great without any additional derelleur hanger like goat link etc. I also have 1x12 setup on my new bike and I did not notice any diffrence when it comes to shifting performance. So, this cassette and XT M8000 SGS works great together. PS: have a nice day/night gays...

I pieced together a m5100 drivetrain second hand with near new takeoff parts. It was very cheap and I love the increased range compared to my hardtails Deore 10 speed.

I've been running the microspline 12s 10-52 Garbaruk cassette on the rest of my XT/XTR drivetrains. Lighter and more durable than XTR. Also I bought mine for less than $230. XT cassettes are not much cheaper. It shifts about 90% as well as a full HG+ drivetrain and as well as a full eagle drivetrain. I cannot complain.

SRAM 1110 chain is $15. Sunrace cassette is $60. Nice 1X Shimano HT2-compatible cranks with SRAM GXP chainring are about $50 on AE. So you could do an entire 1X wide-range conversion for under $200.

Kinda wish I didn’t bother with XT M8100 after Shimano announced M5100, more so now with Shimano releasing Linkglide etc.
They haven’t done anything with Microspline since. I’m sure they’re working on stuff, but seems like you’re tied into high end stuff now. No cheap bike parts from Germany in the UK now after Brexit and price increases.
M5100 would’ve been fine for me. I’d already just purchased XT though when they announced.
I have the Shimano MT410B rear hub so can’t easily swap back with a different freehub? Unless Shimano have one which is compatible. Too much hassle getting the wheel built with the old hub

I precisely did that a while ago: I had a 1x11 SLX drivetrain, changed the cassette and the derailleur (I did put an SLX just for the matching and because I want to move on to 1x12 SLX eventually) and everything else works, so smoothly it seems like it's made for it. Because it's 11 speed, parts are cheaper (which allows me to save to eventually move to 1x12), the bigger range at the big cog allowed me to put a bigger chainring and that also allowed me to gain better top speed while pedaling without losing range for the steep climbs, it's all good for a few more grams, which also makes it more durable in the long run.
