      I don’t know if it’s like this for everyone, but from my own experience, the terms fat and obese are offensive only when one is trying to deny that it is a problem. When i finally looked at myself and accepted that i was fat, i no longer found the words hurtful, and then i was able to move from the acceptance phase to the changing phase, and am 72 lbs down from 246

    So this is fun. Fat activists acting like “obesity” is a modern invention of a word. I got curious and looked up the origin of the word obesity. Here’s what I found:
    Obesity (n): “condition or quality of being corpulent”, 1610s, from French obèsitè and directly from Latin obesitas “fatness, corpulence”, from obesus “that has eaten itself fat”, past participle of obedere “to eat all over, devour”. From “ob” - about, because of. And “edere” - eat. So the origins of the word “obesity” goes all the way back to the 1600s. It’s not a modern invention to “oppress” people. We could always go back to the word “corpulent”. Which hold on, I’m gonna look that one up and be right back.

    • @melissaj1310
      @melissaj1310 Před 4 lety +54

      Replying to myself to expand upon language origins. The word “corpulent” (n): “fleshy, portly, stout”, (late 14th century) from Latin corpulentus “fleshy, fat”. From “corpus” - body, and “ulentus” - full of. I vote if they have a problem with “obese”, then we should go back to “corpulent”, since it predates “obese” so it’s obviously better, right?????

    • @f.-j.j.5738
      @f.-j.j.5738 Před 4 lety +17

      The french is Obésité, not Obèsitè. :)
      The prononciation is different depending on the direction of the accent over the e.
      I would mess it up too if I wasn't a native speaker. French is a difficult language.

    I don't understand why they have a problem with the word obese. Like I was 300lbs and fully acknowledged I was obese, it wasn't insulting to me it was fact and I accepted that. I have lost over 100lbs in the last year and a half, but I'm still obese according to BMI. And that's perfectly fine because again it's fact. I personally started losing weight when things began to hurt badly, especially my back. I couldn't walk a block, heck I couldn't walk across the street without breathing hard and hurting. So I changed and continue to strive to better myself as I am far from my goals.

    When i was 16 years old i reached my highest weight, which was 230lbs (at 5'2" height). It took me about 3 years to lose weight, but i managed to lose 115lbs. It was all a change on my diet and some exercise. No pills, no surgeries, no magic teas, etc. I started by cutting off soda, sweets, everything that has too much added sugars. And as to workout, i started walking then later on started going to a gym for a few months as a visitor (i was in college, couldnt afford it). I also used youtube videos to workout. The thing is, you dont have to make expensive fancy diets or pay five stars gym memberships, you just need to want it enough to commit to it.

    I’m a biologist, human biologist specifically. I use the term obesity as a classification for people with certain anthropometric measurements that are classified as obese (I use waist to hip ratio, but BMI is another). It is important for my research because obese individuals have higher levels of inflammation and when I’m doing a study on inflammation I have to control for obesity or my numbers will be inaccurate. Inflammation biomarkers will be inflated and conclusions could be misleading. My studies are not centered on obese individuals, I take all data, and control for obesity. I guess this is now discriminatory. 🤷‍♀️

Anyone who tries to tell you that your goals are pointless or that you'll never be good enough is WRONG. The only person's opinion that should matter in your life is your own. You're the one living in your consciousness and body after all :) So what are you waiting for? Say some affirmations, grab a notebook, plan and take 3 small steps towards a goal NOW. You're on CZcams, you likely have 5 minutes to spare and it all adds up! Instead of 0 time towards a better life, even 5 minutes for 30 days adds up to 150 minutes.

  • @Blindfold-Me
    @Blindfold-Me Před 4 lety +3

    Beginning of 2019 I was 295lbs (I’m 5’9) Heaviest I’ve ever been. Pcos with insulin resistance (prediabetic), high blood pressure, I had brown rashes in between my theighs/underarms/my breast, and I also have a heart murmur which made cardio nearly impossible for more than 5 mins before I felt like dying. I walked a lot for work, I was a single mother of a young child, and I suffer from depression. I HATED fitness. I have three brothers and two are body builders, one a personal trainer who tormented me about my weight constantly. They were and are assholes, but they were right about my weight being a problem. April 2019 I decided to join the gym and you know what I did that first day? Took a yoga class. And I loved it. And I kept doing it. Eventually I started playing around on the machines and going to parks with my daughter. Eventually I found out I was strong as hell and started powerlifting thinking if I can’t be thin, maybe I can be strong. I got down to 272lbs after months and months of hard work. September that year, I got WLS and enrolled in therapy to help with my eatting and give me a tool to help combat my pcos. It completely changed my life and diet and opened my eyes to how much I was actually eating. As of this morning I am 191lbs, I weight lift 4x’s a week and aim for 10,000 steps a day because I love to go for walks. My blood pressure is normal, my sugar is perfect, the rashes are gone, and I can fit workout clothes from any brand I want which used to piss me off when I was big because most places didn’t carry XXL workout gear that was my style. I didn’t even realize how much better life is after getting my health together and I’m almost at my goal weight. There are days I hate my body, and I sure don’t look like a fitspo, but I wouldn’t trade it in the world for my old one. I’m still working on myself and I won’t stop. If you’re reading this and you are thinking of losing weight I recommend two things: therapy first and foremost because trauma and emotional eatting are fucking real. The second is find something active you love to do and do it more. Dancing, walking, swimming, idc just start there. Make little choices that make you life better like quitting soda, or candy, stuff like that. Find what motivates you and keep it up. I promise that even if it has nothing to do with your looks, it will improve the hell out of your mental health. I am a real person, my story is real, and I have nothing to gain by telling you this but: fuck fat acceptance, fuck confusing your self worth by what you weigh, and fuck staying unhappy in a body you don’t like because you are lazy/trying to prove a point to the world. I know it’s defeating. I know it’s hard, I know how much it can feel hopeless but I promise you, as someone who was plus sized their entire life up to this point.... it’s worth it to improve your health.

    It does make sense to me. I am on my own personal health journey coming from 340 pounds and now I'm at 180 (still not done obviously). When I was at my heaviest, and just hated myself so much, people and posts like this would have made me feel good at the time. It would actually make me feel okay being the way I was.
    Now that I've been 2 years now working my ass off and taking care of my health, I see how much bullshit this is. It is promoting sickness and early death and living life as a victim. These people don't love themselves as they are claiming, they actually hate themselves and want other people to make them feel better rather than having to do the work themself.

    I think people don't understand statistics. they will see someone they know who is larger and also healthy (usually young, but that's beside the point) and someone else they know who is smaller and also has health problems, then assume "well, if my big friend is healthier than my small friend, then it's clearly okay to be bigger". Completely missing the fact that statistically the bigger person is more likely to have health problems long-term and the smaller person is less likely. Health is more than just size, but keeping a relatively healthy size is something that's (for the most part) under your control and is going to help you in the long run.

    If my 6yo can handle switching his diet, and eating more veggies and salads and non processed foods and be happy about it, so can everyone else. Took 3 meals of just healthy foods and he's ASKING for salads and veggies, my 5yo luckily has always loved healthy foods, but I've been implementing change slowly over the last few weeks in my family's diets, my husband is the most resistant to it, but puts up with it lol. They're eating more like I do, and though I can't control what my husband brings home, I can stash it away in a cabinet and pretend it's not here. If my 6yo can happily change his diet, and not be offended by the word fat, or chunky, I'm certain full grown adults can. My 6yo has definitely inspired me to continue on a healthier journey, and though I can't afford the grass fed and organic stuff, there are still healthier options than what we were eating for so long, and I don't want my kids growing up unhealthy and afraid of scientific or descriptive words. I really don't understand this fat movement, don't bully people obviously, but if something someone says about weight in general offends you... it's a you problem.

    I mean if you change " Obesity is responsible for hundreds of deaths per year" to "fat people is responsible for hundreds of deaths per year" yeah that kind of changes quite a few things, like it would suggest that a gourp of fat people are going around killing hundreds of people and it would also no longer be grammatically correct because Obesity is a medical trem so it treated as a Singular noun so the word *is* is used to sate ownership of the fallowing action, were fat people refers to a gourp and would as such be considered a plural noun as as such would use the word *are* to sate ownership of the fallowing action

    I am in a Facebook art group. Somebody posted an art piece of a morbidly obese women by a beach, take that as you will. Post was pretty much saying what you would expect, every size is beautiful and worthy. I replied saying how dangerous and reckless it is to be promoting slow suicide and got some backlash. I tried being very logical and civil about it, but you just can't get through their heads. They really think that being obese is normal and should be accepted, even if it's been proven to cause life threatening diseases and early death. The fat acceptance movement is basically promoting suicide just so they can live in their little happy fantasy world.

    First off, the most that anyone can ask is to be more mindful of the settings and be more considerate of their choice of words. But to try to ban a MEDICAL term? Not going to happen, especially for people that want to be helped.
    More importantly, the life skills that is lacking, like how to deal and tolerate such? They are too self conscious and too selfish. There are obese people that actually do want help, and want to change.

    I agree most obesity is self inflicted. I will differ with you on the point that fat people don't get treated differently. I can't say what everyone has experienced, but I have personally witnessed how obese people get pushed into alot of trials and new programs. There is a prejudice that exist when a fat person is brought into a hospital or rehab facility. I still believe there needs to be more self reflecting, and responsibility taken for someone's becoming fat or obese, but I can be real and say there are different procedures when they come in for rehab or check ups.

    1. Obesity isn't "crushing our healthcare system". There are upwards of 70 million people who don't even have it. The sick care system is just fine.
    2. You don't pay for it with your taxes. Taxes don't fund federal spending,ever. That's not how sovereign fiat currency issuing nations work.

    Obesity is the medical definition of "fat". Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A crude population measure of obesity is the body mass index (BMI), a person’s weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of his or her height (in metres). A person with a BMI of 30 or more is generally considered obese. A person with a BMI equal to or more than 25 is considered overweight.
    Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Once considered a problem only in high income countries, overweight and obesity are now dramatically on the rise in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings.

    Excuse me, isn't the word obesity meant to qualify a condition within the HUMAN body? And why would the word fat be less offensive? I mean, even tho I reached a normal weight, when I look at myself I think that I'm fucking fat, but I'm not obese. Fat doesn't mean anything and is kinda subjective while obese is based on pure FACTS

    So here is where I am. I’m 28 5.10 165. Rock climber. Workout hard 4-5 times a week climb outside three times a month. Unfortunately I moved away from the mountains for grad school. Since I have been here and don’t have easy access to climbing I have gained 20 lbs. I’m not cut anymore. My diet is actually better and I am drinking less and don’t smoke weed anymore. Im in Missouri and don’t have access. I don’t know why I have gained weight and can’t get cut. Everything is better except I can’t climb. I used to climb instead of working out in a gym. I would climb for three hours then work out. Now I work out with dips, pull-ups, curls, triceps extensions, bench, squats, and full kettle bell workouts and can’t get cut. Any ideas? I’m stronger but have built fat around my core. Any advice form the swole fam?

      That happened to me when I moved away from the beach to the middle of the desert. I was also (and still am) 5' 10" and went from 170ish (pretty cut) to 194 (easily grabable belly fat). Except I was eating fajitas and burritos constantly for like three months straight. Basic weight training and cardio (running) wasn't enough for me to get semi cut again. Had to include circuit training (I did crossfit) to get there. I did a lot of upper body stuff, too, to include lots of pullups (which I had to do anyway because it was a job requirement). When weight training, I aimed to be able to get to a sort of challenging amount of weights and be able to do more sets/reps with them than I did trying to continuously increase my max (if that makes sense). I would do reps until failure if I had a work out partner/spotter. I'm totally not a fitness expert, but that's what worked for me to get to the type of strength and fitness (and semi cutness) that I wanted to be at.

      @@ryanwitt9611 Do you work in the meat processing industry or something? Not sure why you eating vegetables would stop someone from working out with you. Maybe one of your fellow masters program colleagues would be up for working out with you once you get to know some of them. I was in the military at the time I shed the belly fat and almost everyone at the base gym was there to work/be supportive when necessary. It was easy to find someone for a quick spot if needed from other gym goers willing to spare a minute for your last set. I didn't try to push it, though, because I know some people don't like being interrupted.

      okisoba I work in retail. I am starting in the fall so I hope so. The school also has a climbing gym so after covid ends I hope I can find some workout/climbing friends. Today something about my workout gave me a kick in the ass and I got that pumped up psych and I put in some fucking work and felt great. On the way home my girl wanted pizza she got hers and I got some fish and made a kick ass fish and veg. My girl mid way through the meal through pizza out and asked to go run, she used to run cross country in school and college, she is going to start coming to the gym with me. We are doing our own thing, but she wants to
      get back to fitness. This was a good ass day.
