2020 Toro Super Recycler (21387) - Sputtering Issue

  • In this video, we discuss what appears to be a common issue with this model (21387), where the mower will start to sputter or bog down randomly. The best I can explain it, is it sounds like it is running low on gas and about to die. After doing some research and with the help of a couple different resources, the issue appears to be related to the spark plug boot not being fully seated. I'll show you how to make sure you have a secure connection. If you found other solutions to this strange issue, please share them with others in the comments below. Thanks a lot for stopping by and watching!!

    I just purchased this same mower (21387) and within minutes of my first mow I noticed the sputtering issue. It would happen almost every time I started walking forward on each pass and on any bumps. The spark plug cap was seated correctly so I pulled the plug and increased the gap to 025 as suggested by another user here (I can't find it now to give credit) and that 100% resolved the issue for me.

    This is an issue with not just this model but later ones as well - specifically the SmartStow (Toro 21564). Replacing the carburetor is the only solution that has reliably worked for almost everyone i have discussed this with on various lawn forums.

      Hi @alokgondhalekar5757...I have the 21564 model and the service center has told me nothing is wrong with the mower and can not replicate the issue. I'm at the point to just tell them replace the carb. Do you believe this should be covered under warranty? My mower is about a year old and only used once a week in the north east.

    Definitely had the same issue with my 2020 21387. Lots of sputtering on rough terrain. My Toro dealer replaced the fuel cap and added foam blocks into the gas tank to reduce the "sloshing" of the gas. This action was based on recommendations from Toro. This did not resolve the issue. After some googling, I came across this video, describing my exact problem. Sure enough, the spark plug boot was not pushed on firmly. My mower ran as it should for most of the time it took to cut the grass but it began to again do a fair amount of sputtering during the last 10 minutes.
    Overall, this mower has been a disappointment. I previously had a Honda Harmony II for 20 years. On the last mow of the season, the drive went out. Instead of spending money on an old mower, I decided to get a new one. My lawn mower repair/dealer recommended the Toro over a new Honda because of several features, including the personal pace drive. If the Toro did not have this sputtering issue, it would be a great mower but if seems odd that this issue was not caught in testing by Toro.

    Thank you Nate for the heads up about the Toro 21387 sputtering issue. This occured 9 or 10 times during the FIRST mow. I have now cut the lawn 7 times since, and this issue has disappeared. The spark plug wire seating trick worked well ! Also, besides using electrical tape on the battery terminals, I placed 3M Scotch Rubber Mastic Tape # 2228 around the battery case cover opening. This tape is waterproof with an effective sealant considering the location of the Washout Port. Give it try!

    Hi, I just bought a Toro 21387 today from a lawn and garden store and this mower had been returned to them for the sputtering and had been granted for return by Toro. They put a new carburetor on this mower to stop the sputtering. The salesman said something about the spark plug wire but that Toro has found that they had some issues with the carbs. This mower was sold to me for $539.00 and the 5-year warranty starts today so...I am pleased with it and thought I'd share with you all what I was told.

    Well I have mine fixed now and it runs great. After going over the ignition and replacing the spark plug then taking the carburetor completely apart two different times and spurting carb cleaner through everything I gave up and ordered a carburetor from eBay for 12.78, it fit perfectly and the mower runs strong with no stuttering. The model I ordered on eBay is 594529. I just went that because it looked right and it was. There seem to be a lot of different numbers for the same part and none are what is in the parts catalog for this engine model. There are several on eBay and Amazon that are similarly priced. I hope this helps some of you that don't have a problem doing the exchange. It takes only a few minutes to replace though you have to take several parts off. This is the best way to be rid of the aggravation.

    I also have this issue, big surprise, and I initially thought it was bad fuel, a bad spark plug, the sp boot not seated, etc. But, after reading all these responses I realized it had to be something in the design. After taking a look, the governor is super sensitive and feather-light with movement. There is a bump-stop on the carb body that keeps it from going to low or two high in its range. This is where I added a small o-ring as to not allow the governor to fall into the low-fuel/sputtering range. So far, this has helped significantly, I can run into trees, go over lumpy spots and never get the falling on the face stumble that I used to get. It does stumble slightly, but nothing like it used to. So Briggs and Toro need to issue a carb body with a wider bump-stop or reduce the sensitivity on the governor. For now an o-ring works for me. If I could post a picture I would...

    I just bought a Toro 21837 and used it for the first time. I had an issue with the motor sputtering and it even cut off once. I was mowing in an area of very thick St. Augustine grass that was overdue to be cut. I thought it just choked out on me. But I'm glad I viewed this video and if it happens again I know what to try. I also had an issue with the rear wheels locking up when I needed to back the mower up. I actually had to drag the mower back since it wouldn't withdraw otherwise from tight areas around flowerbeds. Other than that I got a great cut on my front lawn but set next to lowest level it didn't do much on the bermuda grass in my back yard.

    @Rob-dv8wt Před 4 lety +3

    The issue is with the fuel tank vent nipple. When going down hill or bumpy terrain, fuel will spill out of the vent nipple into the air filter causing it to flood it and run rough. I ended up putting a piece of fuel line tubing on the vent nipple and made an inverted loop out of the top of the air filter cover next to the release clip and then back down into the other hole next to the filter cover clip. This way fuel cannot leak into the filter but it still allows vapor to vent from the tank.

    Same and I even tried to extend the fuel tank breather in the air filter box. If you open the air filter box up there is a little molded piece coming off of the fuel tank. I added a piece of fuel line to divert the fuel to the bottom of the filter box. I still have the issue but this may help others. • @martinh4112
    @martinh4112 Před 4 lety +1

    I got one of these almost new for $80 because the engine had low compression and wouldn't run and would sometimes backfire. Non electric start 163cc version. Found the set screw for the intake valve rocker arm came loose. Did a valve adjustment and the thing ran great until the bumpy patch in my yard. I can even duplicate the bog/misfire by just shaking it while stationary. I went through the carb, re gapped the coil to the flywheel, ruled out the kill switch by unplugging it and shutting the engine off by unplugging the spark plug and re checked my valve adjustment. So far no luck. I actually believe it's related to the ignition system or the newer style plastic carb. When it happens, I get a big whiff of unburned fuel leading me to believe it's a rich condition. One I can't duplicate by shaking individual components like throttle/ choke linkage or wires.
    I'd love to hear the end cause.

I’m debating keeping it for the mulching and personal pace.

    I did the spark plug boot and found mine wasn’t connected. I pushed it on until it clicked. That helped some, but didn’t solve the problem completely . Mine acted as if it was flooding itself out. I noticed a puff of black smoke and smelled gas. I opened my spark plug gap to 025
    and mine now runs flawless. I will follow up with this after a couple of mows to let you know if it’s a permanent solution.
    Update 6/5/20 the first mow after adjusting the spark gap it mowed flawless. The 2nd mow after adjusting the gap it sputtered some. I mowed with it again this morning and it mowed flawless again, it didn’t sputter when turning around and over bumps in the yard. I do have one dip in our yard that I purposely went through to try to make it sputter, and it. It did instantly recover and I had no further issues for the rest of the mow. I can’t say adjusting the spark plug gap is what has made it run better or if something has been sticking and working it’s way out.

      My carburetor looks the same as in your photo, but that line from the base of the gas tank to the carburetor is not a vent - that is how the fuel is delivered from the gas tank to the carburetor. There is a vent from the engine to the carburetor (the upper hose on the carburetor) that I assume is a crankcase ventilation line like a pcv in a car engine.

    Same issue on my aunt's 20339 smart stow junk (not super recycler, just regular recycler 22"). Was like that the day it was bought maybe 6-7 years ago. The spark plug boot "fix" didn't fix anything. I believe on her's it's a defective carb. I tried getting Toro to fix it under warranty and they refused to stating basically it was user error and that the gas tank was probably not full enough when it was sputtering. Toro's a shit brand anymore IMHO. Despite that, I had to buy a new one for myself in a pinch last year beginig of mowing season and got the 21442 on sale and I had figured I would have to return it. But so far so good on the 21442, mean as far as the engine goes, it does have it's minor issues that toro has always had, like shitty bag interface.

    Have the sputtering issue on my 21387 as well. Spark plug wire is tightly seated. Any bump, sudden change in direction or tilting will cause the problem. It seems to get worse as the engine warms up. I added a breather hose onto that gas tank nipple and ran it outside the air intake. This helped but still had problems just not as frequent.

    Ok, I just subscribed. I have been looking at this model to replace an old super recycler that I have. I'm also leery of some some of the bad reviews, gas puking out of the air cleaner, and rough running. Since you spent your own money, your going to probably be a little more honest in your appraisal of it. By the way, I already know it cuts great on short grass. If you want to really do a review, let your lawn get a little overgrown before you cut it. I'm mostly interested in how it mulches at that point, and if it dies out in longer grass. Not everybody can mow on a set schedule! Thanks

    Just a follow up I tried adding the spring but float design wouldn’t allow so I put a “O”ring on stem of needle to force the needle up higher, tighter to seat. It put float at a lean level but tried it anyway. I cut the lawn in same manner I always do. It only sputtered once and I think because it was on a side hill and ran bowl dry. But other areas where it normally would faulter nothing. I’m going to look for some thinner “O”rings to get stem tighter and closer to the right float level. Only draw back I had was restarting, it took longer to start but again I think because hardly any gas in bowl. Also going to look for one of the ultra light springs on newer float needles, I don’t have any here but going to check with a buddy of mine.

Brand new, out of the box with new gas and they still believe this will be their findings. Can’t believe after 15 years with my previous Honda I went to a damn toro and it appears we’re all stuck. After replacing spark plug & air filter as well, turned out the carburetor has a super tiny pinhole that had a speck of dirt in it that needed picked out with a sewing needle. I bought two or these. The first one poured it's first tank of gas right out of the bottom of the motor and would not turn over, right out of the box! My guess is something was left in the cylinder, not allowing the piston to move and a gasket was not seated properly. I took it back and got another one, 21387. I had the bogging down issue that, now I'm reading, seems to be common. Opened the box, charged the battery, the next day, mowed with it for about 5 min then it bogged down like I had just hit a tremendous amount of grass. The electric start would not do anything after that. Pulled the cord and it would turn over and run for about 5 seconds before it would die. Would not start after that. Called Toro Support. They said to take it to an authorized repair shop. They would examine it to see if it was a manufacturing defect or not. I asked Toro if the authorized repair work is also warrantied. They couldn't guarantee anything. Didn't sound too good to me. Took it back. 21387 = pain in the ass, right out of the box!

I noticed the sputtering (rpm drop) happened mostly on uneven terrain. Then, while mowing yesterday, I lightly tapped a fence post with the front of the mower. Sputtered bad. I repeated the same motion/tap a couple of times. Same result every single time! Try it yourself. Moving forward, gently tap the front wheels against a wall or something. Seems like that little but sudden change in momentum moves the arm/spring causing the rpm drop.

      UPDATE: Took it back to the dealer today. They are not sure if the governor is the issue. But they are sure of this: Any sudden change in momentum/direction is causing the fuel to slosh in the tank. In turn, this is causing fuel to run out of the fuel/air vent and directly onto the top of the air filter and into the lower carb.... causing the sputter. This also explains why some owners see fuel coming out the bottom of the air box and onto the deck. After closer inspection, it appears there should be some sort of cover or nipple on the end of the vent preventing the fuel from coming out? Maybe a part is missing? My dealer can not find a schematic of this Briggs yet to confirm. - Ended up returning and upgrading to the Honda engine.

    Update- I commented before about the fuel tank vent nipple leaking. I capped off the vent tube completely and drilled a small hole into the side of the gas cap. This created a new vent. I drilled the hole on the side of the cap closest to the air filter box. This way when the mower is stored in the upright position, the hole is on the top to prevent leakage. The mower only surged twice over rough and hilly terrain. Also, it seems to get better as the engine warms up. Definitely think there is also an issue with the auto choke on these things. I am going to try a new carb as well that was suggested in the comments. We’ll see what happens. FYI- toro model is 20340. Not a super recycler but same engine.

Started spitting when I lifted the front wheels off the ground to turn the mower. Checked the fuel tank and had about 3/8 inch of fuel in the tank.. I filled the tank and the problem stopped. I think part of the problem is fuel slosh.. The pickup is going dry. I'll monitor it and see. Thanks for the video

    Hello all,
    Could someone share the Briggs and Stratton model number for the electric start version? I'd like to see if I can get my hands on one for an old Toro repower. I had a similar experience with the previous generation 190 Pro series with the longer air cleaner housing. The choke was getting stuck open initially. Similar to the video link in this reply thread but not getting caught on a bracket. After actuating it a few times and putting some WD on the choke valve shaft it worked fine for a while, then ended up getting stuck closed. So it went from hard starting to normal run to great starting and sputtery run when warm. The choke thermistor/plastic choke linkage/throttle shaft set up on the previous gen is probably mimicked on the newer gen ones. (Haven't put eyes on a new one yet so not sure)
    Good luck to all who have the sputter. The machine looks really nice otherwise!

    hopefully this will help someone out . A carb issue is always possible but i dont think thats the case here. Your problem is the AUTO CHOKE , the thermostat feature of the auto choke is faulty. Whats happening is the choke butterfly is not staying open and restricting the air flow causing it to run rich aka the sputter. Every time you hear that sputter its because that butterfly is slightly closing . You have to buy the whole new muffler because the thermostat is apparently a part of the muffler . Auto chokes are the worst thing ever to happen to small engines , hondas also have issues with their version of the auto choke . Im also disappointed with this mowers design , dear toro if you are going to sell a mower that has constant issues at least make it easy to take apart. having to constantly unscrew that air filter housing is such a pain in the ass.

      Thanks for this update! I keep coming back here looking for a silver bullet. I may try calling a different dealer. The one where I purchased the mower just doesn't seem to care since the thing runs ok 99% of the time. But I have several birch trees in my yard, and the bumps going over the roots are still causing issues. I tried replacing the carb like mentioned in another comment and that made things worse - the engine would just surge up and down in RPMs no matter what tension was on the governor spring. With the original carb I have two things happening...the engine tends to miss fire periodically (no backfires, just missing), and the governor tends to surge pretty easily. If I tighten the governor spring to make it rev higher, it starts missing and eventually sputters and almost stalls - it will also start surging if I make it too tight. If I reduce the tension on the governor spring the missing stops and it generally runs smoothly until I get to a bumpy spot. But the point at which it runs smoothly seems like kind of a low RPM, so the cut isn't that great and it doesn't pick up all the leaves that may be there like my old mowers have. So while I've got it generally running, I'm still not satisfied it's running like it should. Incredibly frustrating.

      Been in contact with Briggs & Stratton, supposedly the 190cc engines manufactured for Toro prior to January 2020 are impacted. These engines have a fuel tank with a nipple that leads into the side of the air cleaner. Jostling of the engine will spill fuel into the air cleaner saturating the air filter. The fuel saturated air filter is thought to be the issue in the surging/sputtering. B&S is sending parts to remedy this problem. Fingers crossed for a solution.

      @@cnosby sure, the ego persuaded me after my first mow, wish I could post pics. How quiet it was compared to the toro, how easy it is to adjust the height, specially if you are storing it in a tight spot against a wall, with one hand you adjust the height lever, and with the other you lift some of the weight off by grabbing the handle where the bag goes, by lowering the wheels you can fit it closer to the wall. The handle, in my opinion is better than the toro. Again, everything is easier and faster in this machine. With only one lever you adjust the position of the handle and lock it again. As far as extra features the toro only has 2 wins against the ego. The personal pace (shock absorber in handle included) and the side discharge, the ego rear/side discharge does not work, plain and simple. However, all of those things are only extra features. You get a mower to cut grass, and in that department the toro has more suction, this is important to me because I have fescue and have to cut high. The ego, and all electric mowers nowadays, have software to save battery energy that makes the blades spin at a lower rate, then when tall grass is encountered the rpm's ramp up to go thru the tall grass. Well, some of us mow on a regular basis, we don't have to cut 3 or 4 inches at the time, and need the full rpm's of the machine. That's the problem with the ego. It's nice in some many areas including mulching, and good cut quality, but at the end of the day the toro gives a more uniform, even, and better over all cut. But if you're anything like me, I know you'd give the ego a try.

      I traded for the toro 21382 with the Honda engine. Started and ran great but it was way to loud, especially for a Honda. Went back and got the 21387 which is much quieter. The new one doesn't sputter at all. Very quiet and smooth.

    Toro has been junk with their new Chinese engines, I have a brand new Toro snowblower 928 and it has run like shit since new, Toro blames me for using bad gas, I use fresh ethanol free 90 octane

    What a revelation. Mower engines need spark now. Where is the subscribe button and the Twitter junk?

      As trivial as this issue seems, there are tons of mowers being shipped out of the factory with this issue. Instead of having people return them, figured I’d show you that maybe the fix is just this easy. But hey, appreciate your contribution to the conversation, Rick James. :)

      If you don’t have anything valuable to add to the very real issue on an expensive brand new mower. Move on to another video to add you poor humor and negative comments.

      Is that the correct carb for the 190cc B&S super recycler? Same problem here with my 21564 and looking to get the non stow and go version carb as I have heard that is the issue.

      @@jeffstauffacherjust got my 21564 yesterday. Already having this issue. Seems to be any time there’s a bump like tree roots it almost stalls and recovers. I’ll be calling Toro who is going to tell me no bulletins. Probably going to return it to Home Depot. Shame cause I otherwise like it.

    I just used the mower for the 3rd time and still have the sputter/surging issue. I regapped the plug and also reset the gapping on the ignition oil to factory spec. Still no luck. Does anyone have an opinion on drilling out the main jet one size up?
    Very frustrated. I was proud to have a new mower but now I'm embarrassed to even use it. Sounds terrible. I agree with some of the other comments, Briggs and Stratton has really let us down. :-(

    • @peterf971
      @peterf971 Před 4 lety +2

      Ok, I fixed the problem. Took the carb off again and drilled out the main jet to 0.52mm. Put it back together and it runs perfectly. Tried bumping the mower, fast starts/sudden stops, over rough terrain and no more surging.
