okay wait i just did some investigation and i found some info on the shooting that killed the coach’s son, and now i am genuinely so so sad. turns out the coach was the one to find his son dead in the alley where the carjacking happened. it’s just so senseless and sad.
Thanks Lilayyy for sharing your research. That’s the kind of thing I would do too...it’s always sad when some senseless violence like this happens, but I can’t help but be curious
"that was the first time I'd ever heard, there was, an alternative." Swoosh! It's really interesting seeing a comic still in development. He's talking and you see him losing the audience and then his delivery gets flat and like he's just trying to remember the right order to say his lines in. But then something hits with the audience and his face lights up and he takes on the speech mannerisms and demeanour we're more familiar with
I kind of wish he would try to go more conversational and anecdotal in his next special. It would be interesting to see something that isn't so polished with no fat on it
You couldn't really hear the end of it because people were making noise but he says "that's the first time I ever heard there was an alternative to basketball so I became the best at that" meaning doing drugs and alcohol. I've heard him do some of this bit elsewhere where you can hear all of it.
Wow! The detailed version of the bit I've heard probably 20 times. It got really personal and autobiographical. I wonder why he cut the bit about his coach's first words after his son dying.
@@raemorefield4677 think they were saying THIS is the detailed version. Cause he did a bit about basketball in The Top Part but this is longer and more detailed about how bad he was at basketball and has more story to it.
Saw him last night in Poughkeepsie. He killed it. All focus on his rehab stint. Very well done. Will be polished for a nf special soon I guess. Stay healthy JM!
I was half listening to this while working and the laugh at 18:41 that sounds like she was doing back up vocals in the B-52s Rock Lobster totally threw me.
The Catholic grade school basketball stories are so relatable and true, down to the weird friend of the coach who just hung out at practices. I played in games in the last 2 minutes of the fourth quarter if we were up by 20. Bench warmers unite! Thanks for the laughs, John.
Notice something very important: Early John Mulaney had lots of ums and you knows. He exorcised all of them from his speaking habits. To watch his later stuff, he speaks with absolutely no hitches whatsoever and his delivery is flawless. But it came with practice.
Well I think when he's working out material this is what its like even now (little notebook and all lol). A good example of this is the clip of him working out some of the material he did in his snl monologue (3rd time). He does the joke about dads having no friends and I wouldnt say there were no hitches. But by his monologue that weekend its right where it needs to be. So i think with practice he figured out how to work out material quickly to be able to get a very tight set with just right delivery. Its always interesting to see the process tho.
well, I’d say it’s more about memorization. in this, he’s got a sheet of notes and he’s testing things out. a set like kid gorgeous is completely memorized and timed
It delights me to have something in common with John Mulaney. It was volleyball and not basketball, but I too was a benchwarmer, and my team decided my number would be 13, the unlucky one, because every time I attempted to do anything serious something bad would happen. I sprained my fingers so many times. Got bloody noses and gave them to others. I was one of three usual benchwarmers and we too would be put into the game the second half of the last set (I don't know if that's the word, the matches were divided into three parts). One time we managed to catch a very difficult throw from the other team, and we were so in awe we watched the ball roll up high to ceiling (which was quite tall), and then come back down, and there was two of us supposed to catch it, and we both extended our arms (in a bagher, I don't know the word again), and the ball fell to the ground between us about half a meter distant from both, and we lost the point
I just now caught "sometimes he probably rented a movie and made a night out of it" oh my god how did I miss that last time I watched this clip ahahaha
Two things: 1. My fiancée is actually a fairly direct descendant of Solomon Schechter. I’ll see about spreading the word to the family at large that the Chicago school’s basketball team has a history of being conniving shitheels and see what they can do. 2. As the fat kid who was permanently incapable of doing sports properly in school, the nickname “Tank” really hit me where I live.
