Adapted from author Gail Carson Levine's award-winning children's book of the same name, the Miramax-financed modern fantasy Ella Enchanted is directed by Tommy O'Haver and stars The Princess Diaries alumna Anne Hathaway. Ella (Hathaway) lives in a magical world in which each child, at the moment of their birth, is given a virtuous "gift" from a fairy godmother. Ella's so-called gift, however, is obedience. This birthright proves itself to be quite the curse once Ella finds herself in the hands of several unscrupulous characters whom she quite literally cannot disobey. Determined to gain control of her life and decisions, Ella sets off on a journey she hopes will end with the lifting of the curse in question. The path, however, isn't easy -- Ella must outwit a slew of unpleasant magical creatures ranging from ogres to talking books with evil plots. Though perilous, Ella's adventures turn out to be necessary obstacles in the path toward finding herself, and maybe even true love along the way. Fun fact: "Somebody To Love" was not the original song choice. Director Tommy O'Haver discovered that Anne Hathaway didn't have very good chemistry for a more classical "fairy-tale" song, which was their first choice. In the end, O'Haver and Hathaway were relaxing when Hathaway started dancing to and singing along to Queen's "Somebody To Love" and they both decided that this was it.

With how this world is a mashup of the modern world in a fairy tale setting, this song makes more sense than Someday My Prince Will Come.

I read that she was actually first choice for Phantom but due to scheduling conflicts with Princess Diaries, the part went to Emmy Rossum. I love Hathaway but Rossum did a great job playing Christine.
@@mary11976 because Emmy Rossum is classically trained, but what makes the movie a tad bit weird, but not too much, is that she was 16 at the time of filming. One of my favorite things she did was collaborate on a song with Dolly Parton

When I was younger I thought this song was written for this movie, cuz I didn't know that songs could be used like that in movies. I thought so because the lyrics fit Ella's situation so well. Only when I was older and with the power of the internet did I realize that Queen actually did this song.

When I first saw this, like 7 or 8, i genuinely thought it is a good song. Freddie wrote this song over forty years ago. He felt it was a better composition than Bohemian Rhapsody. Beautiful layered harmonies by Queen. His Mother’s favorite song. Almost impossible to believe but their live version was a sight and sound to behold. Freddie singing it and playing piano in Montreal is a great example.

I loved this movie and this was always my favorite scene. I don’t know why, I actually love Queen so much. And when I went to see Bohemian Rhapsody and this was the opening song my heart filled with so much love and I was a little kid sitting in my mom’s room watching this movie. I felt it on a personal level, still do. And honestly I’m tearing up typing this!
