Lecture: Biblical Series XI: Sodom and Gomorrah

Often interpreted as an injunction against homosexuality (particularly by those simultaneously claiming identity as Christians and opposed to that orientation), the stories of the angels who visit Abraham, bless him, and then rain destruction on Sodom and Gomorrah are more truly a warning against mistreatment of the stranger and impulsive, dysregulated, sybaritic conduct.
Abraham opens his heart and hearth to the stranger. The denizens of Lot’s soon-to-be lost cities threaten them with violent rape. God exacts a terrible retribution. The warning is clear.

“When you leave somewhere terrible, do not look back. There’s no nostalgia.” That hit hard, man.
Kwame Mintah Me too my friend, me too!
@in777sight and that's why men need to rule Nations.. Because at some point, the loving bleeding hearted liberal emotionality of the female is a liability to the community
@in777sight first of all, many of the rulers in question were part of Kingdoms that fell.. And women who are good in war and super aggressive are the exception, not the rule. Statistically speaking.
I believe the numbers are only women in the 85th percentile of aggressiveness and disagreeable attitudes would overlap with men in the 50 percentile range.. so every single individual at the most aggressive and most disagreeable end of the Spectrum, which is the precise attitude a war leader would need to take, are all men without exception. That's simply statistics. Biology. Evolution
@in777sight give me the tldr summary
@in777sight of course there are tons of numericals in the biblical scriptures.. Not the least of which is the age of Abraham when he left home, or when he died.. Or the amount of cubits that measures the breadth of Heaven itself.. You are either being deceptive, or you are ignorant of the true stories..
This man is largely responsible for me accepting Jesus Christ as my lord and savior.

Bible says to pray in private. Weird.
I used to be a lukewarm Christian and I did not think the Bible was interesting. Then I got saved and now I spend most of my time reading it and studying it. It’s amazing how you change once you surrender to Christ. ❤
Wonderful Sister! I just hit age 70 and I too spent my life "sleepwalking" as I look back. I never denied God, and when I was in my early teens I was going to an Evangelical church and youth group. I made the decision to ask Jesus to be my Lord and I asked to be baptized. I believe I was saved at that moment. I also believe that because of the times and because I had no discipleship mentors, the demonic powers saw me as an easy target and came swooping that same year before I could really develop or learn to trust the Lord. The next four decades of my life I was totally lost and basically a waste case or train wreck whichever describes that time best. But Jesus is faithful, and when I finally came to my lowest point of despair, I called out to him, he heard, and he lifted me out of that black pit and since that very moment of humility and submission and desperate admissions of failure on my part, all of that wasted time began to heal the wounds of my soul and even mended some broken relationships and also gave me a whole NEW family of true followers of Jesus. It is amazing what individual programs God foreknew each of his human creations were going to live out and how he waits lovingly for us to come to him for the answers and the cleansing of our mistakes and regrets so that we can have peace and joy. In the hyper world which is the present, I don't know if I would choose to stay alive or not, and I can see how some people with no hope and no forgiveness are just overwhelmed at the state of things and choose to end their lives. I pray for anyone in that frame as but for the grace of the Lord, I too would be still lost. I do hope Jordan has had the Holy Spirit ZAP him while he has been studying the bible and being with those who are true believers......he is an intellectual for sure and especially in the fields he took interest in , it must be hard to submit to God.
True and amen

I think it would be great if Jordan Peterson just focused on the Old Testament. He once mentioned how Nietzsche himself vastly preferred the Old to the New Testament.
It would be incredible if Dr. Peterson did one on the Book of Job, or Ecclesiastes, as those two books of the Bible are generally regarded as the most complex, most mysterious, most pessimistic and intellectually challenging books of the entire Bible.
uncle vax his own commentary would be awesome
Dr. Peterson, I've learned more from these Biblical lectures than I have from dozens upon dozens of sermons from modern pastors.
Modern sermons....Wow. 1 in a hundred.
That's because he isn't teaching scripture. He's running through it with a literary and archetypal lens, which basically doesn't do you any good spiritually.
Check out Brian Hardin with the daily audio bible. He frames difficult biblical texts within an intimate relationship between a parent and child. When you question why would such an awful story be in the bible it's because the offender did something rash, without consulting God, or without thinking of the future consequences. Combining that interpretation with Peterson's in very helpful, imo

"I think that Good is more powerful than Evil. Naivety isn't, but I think that Good is. And I think that in a place that's corrupt, a minority of people who stand forth against the corruption can prevail"
Jordan B. Peterson
Powerful
I can´t help but thinking that also a minority of people can make the world evil. Such as Hitler and many many others in our history. Do we have more heroes then villains? i´m not so sure....
Those few people may have been at the head of evil, yes, but it was the addition of everyone else falling into evil/cowardice alongside them that led to those calamities on such a large scale. As Dr. Peterson has said before (paraphrasing since I don't remember word for word), it was the steady moral corruption of every individual in those societies that led to the calamities of the 20th century.
Though of course, the more who stand against corruption, the better, which is why we keep cleaning our rooms and slaying our dragons! :)
I wish this was true. But evil and goodness need equal potency on their agency in other to affect the world in the same degree. As in a competent, proficient good person will affect the world positively in the same degree an equally proficient evil person would damage it.
Duality has no favourites
Evil is a lack of God, like darkness is lack of light, the deep of evil depends on the distance from God, evil doesn't exist on his own, then, evil can't fight against God, only can fight against man in his dreaming life as a separated from God. Finally, evil is too God forgetin himself in the game of knowing his own infinite power.

Dr Peterson said he like personal human antidotes. My brother was never religious far from it. He was a confirmed atheist. His life style from teen age on was rebellious. A Party boy, drugs, alcohol and free sex. He became a punk rocker. He even was a room mate of Courtney Love-Cobain. He continued in his down ward spiral. He was deforced with a child. He depended on alcohol and his parents until he was 42. When they passed way. I told him your on your own. You better figure this out.
He was slowly gravitating to Christianity before the parents passed away but still had the alcohol problem. When the passed and gave him the tuff love message he needed. He turned his life around and remarried with my approval. He knew I would not approve if he was going to destroy another woman’s life. Since then he became a minister and pastor of a small congregation. I never gave up hope, prayed for and God answers. Sometimes some people have to hit bedrock or bottom of the abyss to figure out life. The find there is only one way out of the pit. It is to climb up and reach to the heaven for an answer.
Honestly I think your brother realised the kingdom of god is before him and your brother answered. Like a doctor realises the kingdom of god is before them so they sacrifice a life in their early 20s and 30s to save the lives of others in the same age group decades later; the doctors answer in this instance not god themself. idk i think the distinction is important because otherwise for all the tradies that occur one could say god didn't answer, which i dont think is the case
What many forget is Jesus didn’t come to save the ones who think they’re righteous or good enough, but to save the ones who know they’re wretched sinners like your brother and myself. As the Bible says, not one is good…NO, NOT EVEN ONE. 🙏❤️

This man has changed my life. Thank you Dr. Jordan Peterson. You are brightening a dark world my friend.
I have to remind myself this is a psychological perspective not a theological study. I have been studying theology for few years now and this is something entirely different. However, this is about the best secular understanding from a psychological standpoint that I have ever heard. Jordan is a very unique man and I am grateful to have him in our generation. From a practical standpoint I have learned so much from him and have implemented many of his thoughts into my everyday life and I am better for it, and so are those around me.
This cannot be a replacement for theology though and a proper understanding of the Bible. You have to incorporate the two.
I think he is making the case for the psychological significance of tye bible, which is exactly why the bible is valid, deity not with standing. Which one could argue is a proof FOR religion.
Simple way to state a loving thought and I agree with you. I do love to listen to people who speak intelligently on any subject and I hate the slang and deterioration of good vocabulary that seems to be the norm these days. I love to listen to Jordan, but I am always inviting the discernment of the Holy Spirit to listen with me and keep me safe. I pray Jordan really does find the Lord ....all the way!
Exactly, and this is why an Atheist such as myself and agree with everything Peterson says in these lectures without being converted to the Western religion and why I always facepalm at the fundamentalists in these comments talking about how Peterson is being saved doing these lectures. He doesn't even outwardly identify as a Christian, how doesn't even profess a belief in God or Christ as literal entities. He is doing a psychological analysis of a book. He's done the same for Pinocchio and made some excellent arguments for its cultural significance but you wouldn't say that Peterson believes in and worships the Blue Fairy because he analyzed the psychological significance of Pinocchio.
You can agree with the meaning of a text without taking that text literally.
It's so sad that most can't understand what Peterson is saying about religion as a psychological phenomena backed up by evolution, evidence and science. This isn't Sunday school, this is academic work and it's far more than what your average preacher does on Sundays.
These lectures have completely rewired the way I think. While also confirming my belief in God
I started crying during this talk. It brought up so many times I could have taken another path when dealing with people I didn't bother to get to know.
Amen sir - I was tearing when I read your comment.
"If there's one thing I've learned about the Biblical stories is that to say that they're psychologically right, doesn't exhaust the ways in which they're right."
I was hoping to hear this exact statement in this series because I think it is a very important one to make.
I can't wait for the Exodus lectures. I've watched this series so many times.
The Exodus series is fantastic. I hope Peterson will repeat them for the Gospels.
This is why I financially support Dr Peterson.
How can we do that also? I'd send this guy money
His patreon is a direct source.
@julian bishop I fully expect if you make statements like this, that you spend every cent you don't need to keep the lights on on charity. Otherwise shut up.
@julian bishop Jordan Peterson has a wife with exceptionally bad cancer, a daughter with autoimmune issues that neither you nor I can comprehend, and is fighting several medical issues himself at the same time. He has also been out of work for almost all of 2020 because of that. Go donate your money to whoever you think deserves it, and fuck off telling people what to do with theirs.

Nobody can ever say that JBP talks slow. The speed that he moved through ideas while not losing his main point was impressive. I can't wait for a new set of biblical lectures
That question at the end was superb. He formulated into words what I've been struggling with myself when reading the classics.
I think when Carl Jung says "beware of unearned wisdom" and when the Buddha says the only path to the middle way is through experience of unhealthy extremes. It becomes hard to integrate the ideas into your character without feeling like a fraud because you haven't yet experienced the situations in which you deserve to have that wisdom.
I wouldn't say so much it's a problem of feeling like a fraud, although for some it may, I think what would likely happen (from experience and retrospect of using hallucinogenics for example) is that one builds up a toxic level of arrogance and pride based on something which doesn't even exist. We have 34 year old men and women who walk around calling themselves "old souls" (not that an unspiritual view of the term is incorrect) believeing themselves to even sometimes be thousands of years old and much wiser than the common man.
I wonder what that kind of belief does to the inner life of a person? One of the core aspects of their identity (not just the belief of being an old soul but any unearned wisdom) is a toxic fabrication of their mind. We have a person who innately believes by their intrinsic nature they are a more advanced kind of person and opened up to divine revelation without the balance of the true divine (regardless of what your belief system is) to humble them in receiving that impartation. And now how are they going to interact with others and the world around them?
holy shit i thought it was over after the 10th lecture
its like waking up the day after christmas and it's christmas again (but better)
I think the plan was 12 initially probably because of the 12 disciples, but could a Sunday evening end more perfectly than a new unexpected biblical lecture by Dr. Peterson.
i think he is moving to a monthly on the bible soon - ongoing so you will be sorted for life i guess...
yeah he is

The bible isn't something I thought I'd be interested in but as an adult I find it enriching. Too bad I didn't have this lust for knowledge earlier in my story. Keep it up Dr JBP
... and I came again
L4stman the Bible is multi-dimensional. Amazing! Take the Tanach the Hebrew writing Old Testament, each letter is a numerical ID. Take Paleo Hebrew, like deciphering coded, each letter had deeper insight into the letter and verse. It is insightful and heavens open.
I have listened to this several times and every single time I’m filled with awe at the infinite amount of information in this lecture. This guy is special
I love being alive, but I’m not afraid of dying at all!!! I know exactly where I’m going, & that’s the good news of Jesus!!! when you trust in Jesus & what he did for you on that cross, repent of your sins & turn from them - you get a new heart & you’re given the gift of eternal life!!!!
Discovering this mans existence has had a profound impact on my own existence. I truly thank the highest power for those of his kind!
"be a light unto the world, instead of a blight" JP
The greatest thing I find in Mr. Peterson is his passion for relaying concepts of thinking from different points of reference in a manner that can be understood by all.
This lecture is an inoculation against nihilism. Thank you, dear Dr. Peterson. Alex from Moscow.
Enjoying this series immensely , Looking forward to Revelation .
He might get there when he's in his mid 80's lol
My cat watched this...he’s a Lion now!
Cute!
Damn, that was funny and cute. Thats true. And JP just became a new kind of Chuck Norris! Genius! 😂😂😂
😂

These Biblical Lectures habe eben extremely valuable, when i watched them first. Watching them a time now, i find that they still offer me more wisdom, than i can incorporate at once. That is the power of archetypal material. It always offers new inspiration. And in connection with Jordans practical formulation and distillation, the wisdom becomes even more concrete and directly usefull.
Listening 6 years later and the comment and question about censorship is so much more real now with medical and health censorship.
I love him so much. Did anyone else catch , "coughing your lungs out in a hotel bed". Lol, I am sure he meant to say, hospital bed. He is so brilliant.
Thank you Dr Peterson, from the bottom of my heart. You are proof that the right sacrifice can change the world for the better. Your time and effort has changed my personal life for the best and who knows what will happen as that ripples through the human consciousness.
"If you get your words right, and you've got something to say, then there will be an impact. It might not be the impact you would choose." That is pretty strong. Reminds me of a quote from Fern Gulley, "The truth doesn't always win friends, but it certainly influences people." Just wow.
One of the most profoundly good, personally instructive/ therapeutic and timely lectures to which I've ever had the privilege of listening. Thank you, Jordan Peterson.
2 Timothy 3:7 "Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."
Actually I have a pretty good idea of why lot offered his daughters over a stranger.
Hospitality isn't just an idea, a kindness, it's a duty. It is the duty that formed the foundation of all human trade and diplomacy. In most ancient kingdoms, to take someone into your home, under your roof, to feed and shelter them for a night, was a oath. It was an oath none would forgive breaking. It isn't just that the gods won't forgive your breaking of this oath, they will hate you for breaking this oath.
In essence, it would be a more forgivable misdeed to allow your family to be harmed than a guest, unless that guest was to try and harm your family. I suspect it is because protecting your family is an expectation, you don't get to brag about it as you are supposed to do it. With a guest, you chose to take on that responsibility.
Now there's a useful addition to the comments section.

5 years ago I watched all these lectures. It got me through a career change and much more. I wrote notes on all of them. Spent over 50 hours watching these lectures. You are the order to chaos in many lives. Thank you. If I can help in any way please let me know.
This one session has the most important set of lessons to keep in life.
As a Christian it’s heartening to see a place where people from across the spectrum could sit down and talk and think deep without actually clashing on these things 🙂

Dear Dr. Peterson, today I will start lecture XI, thank you so much for your countless wise- and excellent teaching. Being retired 67 years from the Netherlands, NOT only the young, but also the elderly young people immensely enjoy and learned so much and are still learning from your Maps of Meaning, Rules for Life, YT university lectures, interviews etc. You made me change my retirement plan and speedup do good work !!! Keep on going Dr. Peterson and become Canada’s next president and make these teachings mandatory for all young once but also the elderly young :-)
250 minutes that are pure pleasure fun deep eye opening and so much more. Thank you so much for all your teachings and help as I see millions of people to open their eyes and make them be a better version of themselves assume responsibility and improve the world. God bless you
You remind me of my dad. I wish he was still alive so we could listen to this together and discuss. It wish we could both meet you and I could listen to him talk to you.
I'm starting my first day at an internship tomorrow and I would never feel as collected and realistic about it if I hadn't been watching these lectures. Thanks, Doc Peterson for all the advice and instruction on how to sort myself out. It is the enlightening message I've been looking for.
Same effect on me.. helped me face the day..
This has been one of the most moving lectures I have ever heard - and has changed my life for the better, and I express my great gratitude to Dr. Peterson for sharing his insight to the scriptures in a manner that is so refreshing it is wonderful and marvellous.
Dr. Peterson, Tank you. You've made a huge difference in my life. The world is a better place with you in it.
These lectures are like great works of art. Timeless treasures that speak to the soul.
1:46:03 "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to." (basically his point)
Yes.
Weird comment to see while everyone is ripping down statues for the past week but hey that’s personal empowerment let’s be real
I needed to read this comment.
Yes, but no.
It's more like "leave the bad mode of being and DON'T be nostalgic about it" Imaging rapist being nostalgic about rape. His mode od thinking become deeply corupted.
You must remeber past to make conclusions from it. When it is fully sorted out, then your mind lets it go and you forget.
There is idea that lessons from difrent times can be needed in the futere, when new problems arives. That's why archives of history is crucial.
You can see some nostalgia for communism in some people but mostly it's because of nostalgia for young age and times with more social contact without Internet.
Love I can just drop in at any time in any Peterson talks and it's still pure understandable wisdom
I pray for you Jordan, thank you for thinking long and hard about these stories which some take literally, I recommend it, it's quite freeing and full of wonder. I really appreciate that you would take the time to look into these stories deeply and share your thoughts.
it breaks my heart to watch his most recent videos. I likewise pray for a full & expedient recovery in all ways!!
The question he asks at 1:42 “are you in place that you should leave” is what I’m thinking about our continued residence in California.
Come to Texas!
Stay and help fix it!!
And there’s your sign
I left California to Texas. Best choice I've made
Yet another comment thread that aged well
"you need to look where you haven't looked for what you don't have". Thank you Dr. Peterson for taking the time to clearly articulate these messages.
I have listened to all the series like 3 times in the last month. Movies and music set to the side. Just this.
"When you leave somewhere that's not good, you wash the dust off your feet"
That's a hell of an articulated thing to say...and a truth that needs to be accepted and applied by speech and action... it's like you're not there anymore get the dust you've got from there off your feet and get moving.
Welcome to grandfatherhood! It’s an amazing experience, and this 70-year old has 12 of them, (high in the grandad hierarchy, lol), I’ve suffered in ways for sure, frustrated at times, recently lost my wife to cancer, but there are things that are so amazingly gratifying, that whatever pains I’ve had are greatly diminished.
Eternal life. Mi señor, seras reunido con tu amor en paraiso
bravo! JP is actually reiterating what the Bible says itself about Sodom and Gomorrah:
Ezekiel 16:49 "Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy."
also i am so happy, and it was a personally powerful moment, when he mentioned Magnolia, my favourite film.
love this man! keep slaying
Don't forget Ezekiel 16:50: "And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good."
Dudeist Pianist I
I have watched this series many times now and I think this episode in particular would help a friend of mine, though unfortunately I have tried helping several times, without making things any better. Peterson would say to stop helping at that point. I have. But I do try to be an example for him. I pray that he gets the courage he needs to realize his own value and what he can be. And to leave his wretched job and go forth to a place that values his auto mechanical skills. If I had one wish I would have everyone watch this series. Heck I would pay them to watch it. So valuable. You are valuable if only you realized it!! But you gotta pick yourself off the ground and go find an aim!!
So glad to have you back healthy again. Prayers and support from Canada! The world needs you. Canada needs you.
I just can't understand how some people don't like/love Jordan Peterson. It must be only people who haven't really listened to him speak. He's just so sincere, intelligent, insightful, witty, careful but daring, humble but bold. And when he really laughs at something--so endearing. I pray he'll stay on the straight and narrow and come to really believe too, if he doesn't yet.
Careful but daring, humble but bold, well put

If your going to expend the energy to run, do it TOWARD something you want/need, not AWAY from what you don't.
As I laid in bed for ten months straight, allowing a deep depression to do as it would with me with no resistance whatsoever I came upon a video of Mr. Peterson giving a speech on suffering. It pulled me from the blackness and opened my eyes to the possibility that there is still hope in this journey that is life. I can say that there is a high probability that I wouldn't be writing this if it wasn't for him. Thank you, Jordan.
Thank you for your lectures on the Bible stories. It's an important book, not easily understood by us. You clarify the principles so well I am able to apply them practically.
