Lecture: Biblical Series XI: Sodom and Gomorrah

Often interpreted as an injunction against homosexuality (particularly by those simultaneously claiming identity as Christians and opposed to that orientation), the stories of the angels who visit Abraham, bless him, and then rain destruction on Sodom and Gomorrah are more truly a warning against mistreatment of the stranger and impulsive, dysregulated, sybaritic conduct.
Abraham opens his heart and hearth to the stranger. The denizens of Lot’s soon-to-be lost cities threaten them with violent rape. God exacts a terrible retribution. The warning is clear.

@in777sight first of all, many of the rulers in question were part of Kingdoms that fell.. And women who are good in war and super aggressive are the exception, not the rule. Statistically speaking.
I believe the numbers are only women in the 85th percentile of aggressiveness and disagreeable attitudes would overlap with men in the 50 percentile range.. so every single individual at the most aggressive and most disagreeable end of the Spectrum, which is the precise attitude a war leader would need to take, are all men without exception. That's simply statistics. Biology. Evolution

Wonderful Sister! I just hit age 70 and I too spent my life "sleepwalking" as I look back. I never denied God, and when I was in my early teens I was going to an Evangelical church and youth group. I made the decision to ask Jesus to be my Lord and I asked to be baptized. I believe I was saved at that moment. I also believe that because of the times and because I had no discipleship mentors, the demonic powers saw me as an easy target and came swooping that same year before I could really develop or learn to trust the Lord. The next four decades of my life I was totally lost and basically a waste case or train wreck whichever describes that time best. But Jesus is faithful, and when I finally came to my lowest point of despair, I called out to him, he heard, and he lifted me out of that black pit and since that very moment of humility and submission and desperate admissions of failure on my part, all of that wasted time began to heal the wounds of my soul and even mended some broken relationships and also gave me a whole NEW family of true followers of Jesus. It is amazing what individual programs God foreknew each of his human creations were going to live out and how he waits lovingly for us to come to him for the answers and the cleansing of our mistakes and regrets so that we can have peace and joy. In the hyper world which is the present, I don't know if I would choose to stay alive or not, and I can see how some people with no hope and no forgiveness are just overwhelmed at the state of things and choose to end their lives. I pray for anyone in that frame as but for the grace of the Lord, I too would be still lost. I do hope Jordan has had the Holy Spirit ZAP him while he has been studying the bible and being with those who are true believers......he is an intellectual for sure and especially in the fields he took interest in , it must be hard to submit to God.

Check out Brian Hardin with the daily audio bible. He frames difficult biblical texts within an intimate relationship between a parent and child. When you question why would such an awful story be in the bible it's because the offender did something rash, without consulting God, or without thinking of the future consequences. Combining that interpretation with Peterson's in very helpful, imo

Dr Peterson said he like personal human antidotes. My brother was never religious far from it. He was a confirmed atheist. His life style from teen age on was rebellious. A Party boy, drugs, alcohol and free sex. He became a punk rocker. He even was a room mate of Courtney Love-Cobain. He continued in his down ward spiral. He was deforced with a child. He depended on alcohol and his parents until he was 42. When they passed way. I told him your on your own. You better figure this out.
He was slowly gravitating to Christianity before the parents passed away but still had the alcohol problem. When the passed and gave him the tuff love message he needed. He turned his life around and remarried with my approval. He knew I would not approve if he was going to destroy another woman’s life. Since then he became a minister and pastor of a small congregation. I never gave up hope, prayed for and God answers. Sometimes some people have to hit bedrock or bottom of the abyss to figure out life. The find there is only one way out of the pit. It is to climb up and reach to the heaven for an answer.

I have to remind myself this is a psychological perspective not a theological study. I have been studying theology for few years now and this is something entirely different. However, this is about the best secular understanding from a psychological standpoint that I have ever heard. Jordan is a very unique man and I am grateful to have him in our generation. From a practical standpoint I have learned so much from him and have implemented many of his thoughts into my everyday life and I am better for it, and so are those around me.
This cannot be a replacement for theology though and a proper understanding of the Bible. You have to incorporate the two.

Exactly, and this is why an Atheist such as myself and agree with everything Peterson says in these lectures without being converted to the Western religion and why I always facepalm at the fundamentalists in these comments talking about how Peterson is being saved doing these lectures. He doesn't even outwardly identify as a Christian, how doesn't even profess a belief in God or Christ as literal entities. He is doing a psychological analysis of a book. He's done the same for Pinocchio and made some excellent arguments for its cultural significance but you wouldn't say that Peterson believes in and worships the Blue Fairy because he analyzed the psychological significance of Pinocchio.
You can agree with the meaning of a text without taking that text literally.
It's so sad that most can't understand what Peterson is saying about religion as a psychological phenomena backed up by evolution, evidence and science. This isn't Sunday school, this is academic work and it's far more than what your average preacher does on Sundays.

@julian bishop Jordan Peterson has a wife with exceptionally bad cancer, a daughter with autoimmune issues that neither you nor I can comprehend, and is fighting several medical issues himself at the same time. He has also been out of work for almost all of 2020 because of that. Go donate your money to whoever you think deserves it, and fuck off telling people what to do with theirs.

That question at the end was superb. He formulated into words what I've been struggling with myself when reading the classics.
I think when Carl Jung says "beware of unearned wisdom" and when the Buddha says the only path to the middle way is through experience of unhealthy extremes. It becomes hard to integrate the ideas into your character without feeling like a fraud because you haven't yet experienced the situations in which you deserve to have that wisdom.

    • @Huiothesia
      @Huiothesia Před 9 měsíci +1

I wouldn't say so much it's a problem of feeling like a fraud, although for some it may, I think what would likely happen (from experience and retrospect of using hallucinogenics for example) is that one builds up a toxic level of arrogance and pride based on something which doesn't even exist. We have 34 year old men and women who walk around calling themselves "old souls" (not that an unspiritual view of the term is incorrect) believeing themselves to even sometimes be thousands of years old and much wiser than the common man.
I wonder what that kind of belief does to the inner life of a person? One of the core aspects of their identity (not just the belief of being an old soul but any unearned wisdom) is a toxic fabrication of their mind. We have a person who innately believes by their intrinsic nature they are a more advanced kind of person and opened up to divine revelation without the balance of the true divine (regardless of what your belief system is) to humble them in receiving that impartation. And now how are they going to interact with others and the world around them?

Actually I have a pretty good idea of why lot offered his daughters over a stranger.
Hospitality isn't just an idea, a kindness, it's a duty. It is the duty that formed the foundation of all human trade and diplomacy. In most ancient kingdoms, to take someone into your home, under your roof, to feed and shelter them for a night, was a oath. It was an oath none would forgive breaking. It isn't just that the gods won't forgive your breaking of this oath, they will hate you for breaking this oath.
In essence, it would be a more forgivable misdeed to allow your family to be harmed than a guest, unless that guest was to try and harm your family. I suspect it is because protecting your family is an expectation, you don't get to brag about it as you are supposed to do it. With a guest, you chose to take on that responsibility.
