Dr. Jordan B. Peterson is joined by the late author and commentator Rex Murphy, who guides us through the boundless Canadian province of Newfoundland. Between complete isolation and the cutting edge of history and modernity, its people and culture stand resilient. Our hosts journey from port to port, taking in the unrivaled beauty while discussing John Cabot’s historic arrival, modern day challenges of the fishing industry, breakthroughs in both spirit and science, and the awe-inspiring kindness shown by Gander residents after September 11, which captured hearts and minds all across the globe.
Dedicated to Rex Murphy, a true friend of Canada
Rex Murphy was thoroughly Canadian: a writer and commentator who centered much of his work on the country that he loved. First gaining attention in 1965 for a speech given at Memorial University, he called Newfoundland’s then-Premier Joey Smallwood “dictatorial,” launching him as a voice against tyranny. For 21 years, Rex regularly hosted CBC Radio One’s Cross Country Checkup and published a column in the Saturday edition of the Globe and Mail. Rex was seen, heard, and listened to by millions of Canadians for decades. Much of his writing and opinions have been preserved in published books such as 2003’s “Points of View” and 2009’s “Canada and Other Matters of Opinion.” Always considerate of those who he could help, Rex was humble, grounded, and full of wit - traits that continually brought admirers to hear his commentary. A lifetime lover of his country, Rex was a valiant man of his words who bravely said what he believed throughout his life until the very end. He passed on May 9, 2024, at the age of 77.

Rex Murphy was Canada's greatest journalist. He was the embodiment of everything we need and don't have from our media today. Perceptive, insightful, and above all else, truthful. Unfortunately, we lost him when we needed him the most. In fact, Canada needs a 1000 more Rex Murphy's right now, and we lost the only one we had. Rest in peace Rex. Thank you JP! ❤‍🩹

This was magnificent, thank you! I'm not Canadian, but as a lifelong lover of Canada and its wonderful people, I loved listening to Mr Murphy on CBC programmes such as Cross-Country Checkup, over which he presided for many years. In my mind, he always represented the very best in journalism at the CBC, back when the broadcaster was still a cross-cultural, unifying force in Canada. Of course, these days, along with the BBC in Britain and NPR in the States, it is no longer. Regardless, once upon a time there were journalists like Rex Murphy, who cared about people, community, and truth as foundations for common discourse. And I hope that someday, people will look back at giants like him and realise it's not too late to return to those principles. RIP, Rex Murphy.

My father’s employer transferred us there in the early 80s first to Newfoundland in fact and then to Alberta. After moving home to Scotland in 97, I lost touch with much of Canadian media and Mr Murphy’s singular presence in it. It was Jordan Peterson’s and Rex Murphy’s conversations online, offering excoriating condemnation of the excesses of Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government and Covid overreach in particular that brought me back to Rex. What a gift for language and its use he had. I’m very sorry to hear of his passing. This was a lovely tribute to a great man and a truly unique part of the world.

@seanquinlan6887 it is; his passing has been a stark reminder of the fleeting nature of our existence. Watching Rex on CBC throughout my life, and as a constant fixture in Canadian households; seeing his frailty in his final years, and then his passing was a bit jarring. But this is also bittersweet as it was a heartwarming segment about the man and the province, both of which are truly great.

I lived in Canada through the pandemic, had never heard of Rex. His podcasts at the time with JBP were some of the finest I've ever heard. Wonderful, erudite, level-headed, eloquent insight into Canadian society, culture and the Canadian mind. What we would do to have a journalist like him in the UK.
    Rest in peace, Rex.

Yes so do I!!!! I think us CANADIANS must stand together and take our country back from those people who are trying to destroy it! They think they can change our history and take away from us what people before us built and fought for, But we must Not let them, we are the ones in charge of our Government Leaders. They must answer to us and we must stand Strong and take our COUNTRY Back I LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY OF OURS AND WILL NOT LET ANYONE TAKE IT FROM US PROUD AND FREE CANADIANS ❤ 💙 ♥ 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦✝️

We traveled to Newfoundland in the mid 90s and stayed at Rocky Harbor Cabins. At the General Store we bought the best cod we ever tasted. Every morning we walked down the road for fresh tea biscuits. Newfoundland blew us away. It's from a different time ~ it's magical. Thanks JP for this tribute!

God bless his good and gentle soul. Thank you so much for this video. My family is from Nova Scotia, close by Newfoundland. My ancestors lived on Digby Point where a direct ancestor, Charles McNeill, rowed out in his dory, got caught up in a storm and died leaving a wife, Ruth Thurber, and seven children. There's a quiet strength and decency to the people in this area of North America that's uniquely beautiful. Good Angels bear to His arms, Rex Murphy.

My heart is too full for easy words.
When we got the news that Rex had passed away, I kept thinking how sorrowful I was that I had not got the chance to meet him in person. And I felt so sorrowful that there would never be another conversation with Dr. Peterson. And so this documentary is such an unspeakably precious gift. To remember how desperately ill Dr. Peterson was when he first talked to Rex and to compare that fragile pain-wracked man with the rosy-cheeked bright-eyed man talking with Rex in this documentary- it’s such a gift. And that Rex had the chance to give all that he had to give while he was alive. I have had strong ties to Newfoundland through childhood friends for many years and this brought me so close to them, and to Rex and Dr. Peterson. This is a tribute to a life very well lived indeed.
    With Ruth Anne’s love

When Rex was w/ the CBC he was a stand-out journalist and a warrior, but those who followed him knew he was muzzled (like Tucker at Fox). After Rex left the CBC we finally got to see him at full volume and uncensored opinions that we (I?) knew were there. This beautiful eulogy of Rex by Dr. Jordan, showing Rex comfortable, and the pride he shows in the culture he loved...it's just perfect.

I can't help but wonder what Rex would tell us now that he's crossed over.
