Lecture: Biblical Series VI: The Psychology of the Flood

The story of Noah and the Ark is next in the Genesis sequence. This is a more elaborated tale than the initial creation account, or the story of Adam and Eve or Cain and Abel. However, it cannot be understood in its true depth without some investigation into what the motif of the flood means, psychologically, and an analysis of how that motif is informed by the order/chaos dichotomy, as well as by the idea of an involuntary voyage to the underworld or confrontation with the dragon. In consequence, this lecture concentrates almost exclusively on psychology: How is an encounter with the unknown to be understood, conceptually? How and why is that represented with themes such as the underworld voyage, the dragon fight, or the flood?
All that constitutes the theme of lecture VI.

I think Peterson's message is simple. Freedom *is* doing what we want, but if we all do just *that* then we won't be able to do it very long, because everything will fall apart. So there is just MORE TO THINGS THAN THAT. The message I hear from him is that there *is* "right behavior," but having it coerced by government is the wrong path - it needs to come from within us and be our CHOICE. So freedom is having the ability to do what we want, but that doesn't mean that all we should use to guide our behavior.

However, i didn't take any psychoactive substances for a long time after that but tried to apply the 'wisdom' to what i encountered in my life and it has helped tremendously. Wow, 45 minutes in, JP has just finished saying that when people get isolated, out of a routine, they no longer have the social, sanity signals that keep them sane. This, I think, is so true of the new generation that I count myself as a part of. A lot of people don't have a routine, we are spending more and more time alone online, instead of getting those sanity signals we need to maintain sanity. I have noticed, that when people become unemployed, they tend toward an ideology because they ensconce themselves in an echochamber like corner of the internet and end up "drifting."

Buck Shot: I think I'm in trouble because I don't even know what "sanity signals that keep them sane" refers to. There seems to be a kind of logic to the way people disintegrate when dislodged or deprived of human understanding at whatever level. Like the Dr. said it can happen from losing a useful and functional routine, unemployment, excessive loneliness ( with an obsessive reliance on the religious voodoo on so much of TV) It leads to a kind of language disassociation that leads to postmodern hell. Things do seem to break down in an orderly fashion, in my experience.

How coincidental. I watched half of this video a while ago, and decided to come back to it after I realised I'd forgotten about it. I came back in at about 1:27:00. He started talking about your boss calling you in and saying that you're performance is somewhere between mediocre and decent, and we're downsizing, so see you later. And then about how to make habitable order out of that emergent chaos. (I'm paraphrasing at this point). Then goes on to say about why that may have happened in the first place, and I swear down he pretty much hit the nail on the head about why I feel like I'm in this situation.
I lost my job (more than once), I realise it's probably because I feel bitter and resentful at the fact I didn't do what I really wanted to do with my life, which severely impacted my mental health and performance at work. I never stood up for myself at any point and just went with whatever came my way.
I wish Dr Peterson had started to gain a name for himself on the internet earlier, I might have convinced myself to do more with my life sooner. Thankfully, I am actually on the path to do the thing that I really want to do. I'm beginning an Access to Higher Education diploma in a month's time, and if I do well I'll be able to study at University after that. Things are starting to look up.

I'm really high and I came to this conclusion:
Regarding all of the information given in these lectures and Jordan Peterson's rising fame, what's happening here is that Peterson represents to a large extent the highest degree of order of being which we all are part of. Let's face it, we are here from all colors, race, religions and ideologies (right wing and left wing). And yet here we are, listening to this man spout truths which make us take a massive introspection in which we discover that we are indeed inside the dragon's belly, namely, chaos.
But, there's more to it. Not only are his words helping us discover our dragons and consequently other's dragons, Peterson is that hero which descends from the clouds of chaos to bestow upon us the swords of truth to slay them.
This is why I think there's a vast amount, in my estimation, of people that admire him. When was the last time someone said: "Go clean your room!" and it instantly became a habit?
I think I speak for most here. So, Dr. Peterson, we deeply admire you! Slay the dragon!

I'm really getting a lot out of the lectures. They go into the deepest parts of what i already know about myself. I use these teachings in my work too - helping the most disadvantage people in society. It's not difficult to use this knowledge with others because it's clear and to the point and it feels to me like it's already within us. How do i help others? Well, to be a better person each and every day to myself is to be a better person for others - that then allows them to be a better person to them self..and so begins the ripple effect. There's no cure to what is or what's coming - only a commitment to idea of what one might believe to be their standard of better searching best. Thank you JP for providing these for me to view :) I write a lot of songs and always have and the discussion about burning out the dead wood or waking up the better part(s) of yourself naturally became the cause for me to write again. I'm happy to share it.
I think I died, burnt myself to ash
I think I died, before I came right back
I felt the ache, I suffered in turn
Maybe smelt smoke, before the burn

Wake up the Christ that's in me

@@misssarahashplant31 Are you serious? Lmao, 97% of the scientific community agrees we have serious issues regarding climate change and reports from the most prestigious peer-reviewed journals keep coming in corroborating and further detailing this thesis, and you come here telling people it's all a lie like a dumbass flat-earth conspiracy theorist? I gotta laugh. And just so you know: yes, we do have all the data backing this up, lots of data actually, but maybe you're just too lazy to look it up for yourself and refuse to pay for scientific articles, or maybe you read them and don't understand them? The only thing still up for debate, to be fully honest, are the CAUSES of this insurgent rise in temperatures, but at least 70% of scientists agrees that the vast majority is due to our production processes and industrial impact. But whether or not climate change IS a thing is NOT up for debate. It's a fact. Regarding Greta: honestly who gives a fuck? You don't like her? Fine. You like her? Fine as well. She is just a collateral effect of a social movement that has been going on forever, and to be honest it's important that we keep it up so that people in charge can start converting their industries through renewable energies. It's not easy, and we don't yet have a solid, efficient way to do so. But we should nonetheless try, because part of our future depends on these choices. With that being said, if you want to keep living in your pretty bubble where no problem outside your daily routine exists, then by all means keep doing so, it's not a problem, but I urge you not to spread bullshit around before educating yourself on the issue.

@Myth Tree The 97% claim is not false, it just needs to be contextualized (which I did, further suggesting that indeed the percentage is lower when considering who, among those 97%, believes that this process is mainly human made). I'm not aware of the 5% you're talking about, if you could send me some articles I'd gladly give them a read. Of course the more details and implications you address on the field the less consensus you'll get, since we all know that these studies are quite a new ground of research and analysis, so I'm not here to claim absolute certainty and indisputable truths. I'm just tired of people claiming that climate change is a hoax, when clearly is not, for we do have all the research to back it up. Articles about these problems have been circulating since the 80's, yet many industries suppressed them and made them unavailable to the public. That's the real scam, not climate change. Also, again, I don't give a shit about Greta, I made myself pretty clear before, so don't twist my message please. Anyway, yeah, I don't like peterson either, nor his religious fans.

@Myth Tree lmao you're deep down into conspiracy bullshit my friend. Saying "my friend started the first or second skeptic website" is the funniest shit I've read in a while, and it also doesn't show, nor prove, any of your points. My question stands still: show me where you found those statistics and I'll read them. Until then, you presented nothing but vague and unsupported statements. You can't just say "there are detailed breakdowns of those false claims all over the web" because we all know you can find anything on the web if you search well enough, to the point where you start questioning everything. That's not what research is about. I cited my sources, if you don't believe them, then do you my friend. But until you send me any of your sources your comments are just hollow trolls. Also, one last time, stop talking about Greta. I already told you I don't give a shit about her, nor I believe she (or any of her family members) holds any truths on this matter. Oh, by the way, I do science for a living, physics research specifically, and I am indeed aware of the political problems of academic research, so don't waste your time schooling me on how your friends are the woke skeptics on this matter. Why won't you cite any of them? I'll be patiently waiting. Science doesn't work by intimidation, nor by "my friends said such and such.../I have friends working on...". I'm not questioning the fact that you might indeed have those kind of expert friends, I'm just asking you to cite your sources, just like I did in my former message. Moreover, I already explained why the 97% claim I made needs to be contextualized, and also why the percentage gets however low you want once you start adding details and causes to the problem, so stop twisting my words please.

The Holy Spirit is often thought of as God’s love, esp between the Father and Son and us also. Therefore sin committed against the Holy Spirit is a sin against God’s love itself. If one rejects God’s love they are rejecting forgiveness itself. And therefore one is rejecting the forgiveness of God and therefore the salvation of their soul and thus choosing hell, as you say the ultimate chaos. This is what it means to sin against the Holy Spirit.

And for the part on eternal hell? I think forgiveness is always a thing God is willing to give when we're ready when we come to loose ends to accept forgiveness; if Hell was eternal and we are sent there forever- that's just cruel. Even I wouldn't do that.
A loving person even like myself couldn't do that to my worst enemy. I think God is Holy but also just and purely forgiving with the understanding of everything, which concludes pure love and not punishment- but done by humans. For there is a time for learning and a time to stand. I believe learning is not through ultimate torturous punishment but through the ease of discipline with treating the evil with good in reward. If you ask me, the God that I believe in doesn't forget about and waste the people that was created in the image of source.

I will probably regret this but, no, there is no possible reconciliation of science and religion. They are two different levels of representation of reality whose fundamentals are incompatible.
What Peterson is doing, however, is exactly what he claims he is doing, that is, he is providing a psychological interpretation of the bible and, if I may say so, a rather interesting and sophisticated one. For that, I thank him.

I used to be a Sunday school teacher at my church but I was so disillusioned by how the Bible was being taught to the kids. And I could see it on their faces that none of the things I was saying were making any sense. But after these lectures I feel I can see better and instead of teaching them, I will learn. Kids have a way of seeing these stories much more clearly than adults. Thanks man

Jordan the type of Peterson who critiques the theoretical frameworks he believes in because if you choose the alternative, well Goodluck with that! Seriously though, he is The father figure that this generation never had and has been yearning for without knowing they are yearning for it.
